YONECO is a local, non-political, non-profit, non-governmental organization that was formed in September 1997 to address the social injustice, human rights, child delinquency and reproductive health issues affecting youth, women and children.
YONECO registered with the National Youth Council of Malawi under the National Youth Council (1996) Act, under the Trustees Incorporation Act (1962) in October 1999 and with the Non-Governmental Organization Board in 2003. YONECO is governed by a Board of Trustees and a management team. YONECO has experienced an increase in donor partners in the last three years, with the organizational expenditure increasing from US$135,000 to over US$1,200,000 per annum, most of which is donor funding. YONECO has increased its checks and balances through deliberate inclusion of both internal and external audit functions. The internal audit informs management of the situation on a quarterly basis while the external audit conducts an independent review annually and when the need arises to inform the Governance of YONECO on the status of YONECO at any point in time.
Starting as a small community-based organization, YONECO currently is one of the strongest organizations working on issues of youth, children and women's development. YONECO has a strong leadership team both at the Board and Management levels as well as documented organizational policies and systems including finance systems. It also has competent administrative personnel that are able to effectively manage organizational growth.
