Diesel engine runaway is a rare condition affecting diesel engines, in which the engine draws extra fuel from an unintended source and overspeeds at higher and higher RPM and producing up to 10 times the engine's rated output until destroyed by mechanical failure or bearing seizure through lack of lubrication.
This video features Runaway Diesel Engines and Fails. If you wanna see the best Runaway Diesel Engines and Fails watch this video and if you like the video hit the like button.

Happened to a buddy and I in his VW Rabbit diesel. Had just helped him do an oil change. Apparently one of us miscounted the quarts or something. We drove like 15 miles, but then went up a 17% incline highway and suddenly the gutless wonder had us doing 65mph and climbing faster and faster. He started downshifting then started upshifting but only went faster of course. I finally said "pull over and put it in neutral... and shut off the key... she's done for." He pushed in the clutch, but the oil had to have burned off and we were on a flat at that point and it went back to idle. Was the fastest a VW Rabbit diesel had ever gone, let alone up a 17% incline.

@Winahh Taylahh One should research before making accusations out of the blue. We DO use metric. What that has to do with miscounting bottles of oil is irrational and shows you have an obvious axe to grind.... but here's some insight as to why the US isn't officially metric in the YT video link below. Short and sweet spoiler: Metric started in 1790 in France and wasn't an accepted standard elsewhere at that point... when the industrial revolution hit, everything was tooled for Imperial (1825 standard we know today). To suddenly change all the tooling of the largest manufacturing machine the world had ever known at that point was close to impossible. It IS slowly being changed... so calm down. There are other problems in the world to give a crap about.

I remember this happening during my time working as a mechanic. I had just served my apprenticeship and did an engine swap as one of my first big assignments and this happened to me. Had this happen on my mk6 tddi transit van. Suddenly the van accelerated away with a huge white cloud behind it.
Pulled over, handbrake on foot hard on the brake, put it in 5th gear and banged the clutch up hard. Stalled it out and saved the engine. Turned out the nose seal on the vp30 diesel pump had failed and pumped 10 litres of diesel into the crankcase. The level rose till it was sucked through the pcv valve through the turbo and intercooler and blown into the intake manifold. Engine was feeding itself. Changed the diesel pump, drained and flushed the sump.
New oil and six years later the Van's still going strong on the replacement pump. If you stall it out quick enough you can save it.
Very unnerving when it happens the first time thou. Lol.

Rule of thumb when rebuilding or cold starting an old diesel after a long period of time. Always have a board and rags, or a CO2 extinguisher right next to you. New turbos tend to drop seals, and the old diesels (especially abandoned ones) tend to have the injection pumps stick wide open. If you have board and rags, or extinguisher right next to you chances are you can stop the runaway before any damage is done. This of course is assuming you get on it right away as soon as it starts to run away.

I know a mobile diesel mechanic who is really, really good. I was working on a Ford F350 with the 7.2 (I think). My boss had called him out to help figure out what was causing a random loss of power/stall. After doing a few mins of diag, he found the fuel was cloudy. He said it was because the lining in the tank had failed. While he was there, he was also telling me that the turbo had a lot of oil puddled up around the inlet and could cause a runaway. We talked about that fow a few mins and then he told me something that chilled me to be bone. It was very rare but had happened to him twice: Sometimes, the wrist pins can fail. If it happens while the engine is running away, the crank can launch a piston straight through the head. Said it happened on a 5.9 Cummins and after going through the head, proceeded to tear right through the hood, hook a hard left and take out the A-pillar and windshield of a car sitting next to it.
This is why I don't work on diesels.

Under these circumstances the only speed limiter is when the engine floats the valves (it goes so fast the valves can't fully close, so any increase in speed causes loss of compression and thus power and any decrease in speed causes gain of compression and thus power). Robbing the engine of air is really the only way to stop a runaway diesel.

A tandem pump (pumps diesel and oil in two chambers on one electric pump) on Audis and VWs in the 1990s through to 2015 always go (sometimes within a year of ownership) resulting in diesel mixed in the oil which leads to runaway.
Dad had this happen to Mum's VW Touran GTD in 2010. It detonated the engine despite shutting down on key shutdown due to the electric pump isolating and no longer pumping. Diesel engines with mechanical pumps can only be shut off by preventing oxygen from entering the engine.

3 things a gas engine needs to run- air, fuel, and SPARK. A diesel does not require spark, instead the compression ratio is much higher, which atomizes the mixture and due to the high pressure creates any fuel to ignite. No spark plug needed. Soo, if a rogue fuel source such as a blown turbo seal that leaks directly to intake, due to its nature will run without the ignition. The only way to stop it is to cut off its air supply via turbo or carb. The ignition switch only controls the electronic injectors. And diesels will burn almost anything for fuel. If left running it wont stop until the leaking turbo has drained all the crankcase oil, thus the white smoke and engines ending up siezing and blowing all coolant out. TOAST!

Miałem kiedyś taką sytuację w Sharanie. Wystarczyło wrzucić 5bieg i ruszać. Silnik się zadusił i zgasł.

Albo wcisnąć szmatę w dolot. A najlepiej potrzymać silnik na wolnych obrotach, zamiast od razu go gasić. Ja zawsze czekam pół minuty, zanim zgaszę silnik, żeby turbo w dupę nie dostało.

if cutting off the air supply by using a fire extinguisher and pulling the battery out of a runaway engine doesnt work. how would you stop the runaway engine?

run to a safe place behind a building and wait for pistons to rocket through the engine or for engine to explode

In this case you can try to put a high gear try to sufocate the engine closing the Air intake or disconecting the diesel lines

Disconnect the diesel line will do NOTHING the engine is running on its own oil... Starving the air by blocking the air intake with a cloth or a wood plate will DO SOMETHING

Had that happen to me. Some random guy just enter the car put a high gear and stall the engine. Don't know if it works in all situations/engines.

With a manual gearbox, you can do it but with an automatic gearbox, you should put cut oxygen entering in air pipes (having a little co2 fire extinguisher in car is a good idea)

Imagine being inside a car in a garage with it having a runaway engine
    Pure CHAOS

You'd be getting out of there pretty quick otherwise you'd die 💀

Usual cause - failed oil seal in the turbo, oil used as fuel pumped straight in.

9:50 Last option rubbish! It's the obvious way to stop a runaway.
    Interesting video tho. Thanks!
