I got one a few years back and once you season it, it's very easy to take care of. I've seen sme rust buckets after a year but they definitely never seasoned it or reseasoned it ever. I find that if you take care of the spots that always form rust easily that you wont have any issues
I have an old grill that my granddad Built back in the 80s out of a piece of old oilfield casing it’s got about a half inch of smoke built up on it!!!! That’s my favorite part is breaking in a grill!!!!! See you on the next one
Just sean you on Cecil and heather channel so I came and sub to see your content....turned on the bell and I`ll be checking out your content in the next weeks....I`ll be around.....CHEERS
Good job on the video. I just bought the same grill to replace one that I have had for about 10 years, I discovered that the smoker firebox had rusted out badly. With these tips, I should get a long life from this one.
Canola oil is very unhealthy for your diet but great for seasoning your grill/smoker because it is superior with high heat. Only use it for this purpose, not in your food.
@@RidgeLife I got wash it with soap and water (per Oklahoma Joe's chat) but I don't buy it. So you put the vegetable oil over it and burned it off? And thanks for your patience.
Oh yeah, some serious good eatin is gonna take place. My smoker has been cured with several racks of ribs. I open that bad boy and is smells of pure goodness. Enjoy that beast.
I have a 10 year old Horizon smoker. All the paint cracked/rusted off the outside and the inside is SHINEY black from all the smoke buildup(resin). It it rusted on some parts(bottom of barrel and sides basically the whole lower half) but thats to be expected because I used 100% wood to cook on and I would burn up all my seasoning after the first use. Even high temp paint doesn’t stay on the outside.
Very true! I’m thinking an occasional oiling of surfaces the don’t get cooking grease and often rust. We often hear of the bottom falling out. I guess you get what you pay for too (or make!). Thx
RidgeLife for sure. This thing is far from failing though. It is warranted for life and its made with 1/4” plate steel. Lol. It will take a while to rust through.
C’mon my man, using a paper towel?? Get a clean rag instead, watching you struggling with all those paper bits was a little fun. Another tip? Buy yourself an oil sprayer bottle instead. There. I should be an TH-camr myself. 🙄
Three years later. still a great video. Thank you sir!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You gave the best step by step for seasoning a grill video for beginners I’ve found on TH-cam. Fabulous Job !!!!
Awe! Thx Ryan!
Thanks for showing us an easy way to cure an Oklahoma Joe. I'm ready to get started now.
Good luck!
Excellent video for seasoning. Thank you very much.

Good luck!
Thanks for video. Very well explained 😊
My pleasure

Thanks for the info!! I totally agree!
Just got my Canyon Combo seasoning it tonight. Excited.
Hope you enjoy!
@@RidgeLife
Do you not have to season the outside? Saw videos doing so
Very helpful. Thank you sir.
Thanks!
You'll have fun wearing that in this summer 👍
Paige family Homestead Our Journey back doing it now!!! It’s warm in the south. Just wet.
I always wondered about maintaining them. Thanks now I know and knowing is half the battle. Go Joe.
Linda Wall for sure! Thx and take care.

The Corgills thanks brother! Oh yeah!
Need to know this. I always wondered how to stop my grill from getting rust. Great video.
Thx. Good luck!
Great lesson thanks!!
Thanks!
Closer and closer to barbeque yay. 🤤. I have a barbeque addiction problem I'll admit it. I grew up eating charcoal barbequed food.
Sunnie DIY love good ol charcoal. I can’t wait to use the smoker
Making the grill great, awesome job
Glad you like it! Thanks!
Been waiting for this video.
DoubleJ homestead thx! I got lucky as it rained after I left it out to cool.
Great job and explanation brother!
Thanks Kevin! Take care
*GOOD MORNING FRIEND & FAMILY*
Valdi obrigedo ebom Silva good morning
Great video ❤️
Thanks!
8:33 Is the flat side of the grates supposed to be facing up or down?
Down I believe
@@RidgeLife Thank you! How is the grill holding up?
That is one sexy grill brother.... I never gave any thought to seasoning a grill.... I just assumed the cold roll steel was to blame
Homesteading Northern Michigan me too! Makes sense though!
@@RidgeLife opened my eyes

@@RidgeLife Thanks my friend
Thank you
Welcome!
So do you also put oil on the burners and black covers or just leave those unoiled? I just bought my grill and will cure tomorrow
Not the burners but all cooking and enclosure surfaces.
Awesome, thanks so showing me how to season my grill. It's been 3 years how is your grill?
Its perfect so far!
Good job on the video. I just bought the same grill to replace one that I have had for about 10 years, I discovered that the smoker firebox had rusted out badly. With these tips, I should get a long life from this one.
Good luck!
Do you season the top as well? Since most of the complained online, the paint was peeling off.
I seasoned the whole thing but inside top and bottom mostly.
@@RidgeLife okay thank you 😊
What do you use on the outside
I just clean and light vegetable oil as well but rarely.
Can you substitute the vegetable oil with canola or corn oil?
Yes you can!
Canola oil is very unhealthy for your diet but great for seasoning your grill/smoker because it is superior with high heat. Only use it for this purpose, not in your food.
is there a reason you need to do the gas chamber separately or can you do the whole thing at once? thanks!
Oh no. Whole
Thing is fine just do each at the correct heat as time.
Another question. How do you clean bottom of the gas section? Or do you leave it alone?
Hmm… I don really use the gas much but I have taken out t eh grates and just used wet rag then oil.
@@RidgeLife Mine got pretty gunky after a few uses. Thanks, friend. Probably more questions to come. ;o)
How do you clean initially clean off the factory machine oil?
I just burn it off with the seasoning.
@@RidgeLife I got wash it with soap and water (per Oklahoma Joe's chat) but I don't buy it. So you put the vegetable oil over it and burned it off? And thanks for your patience.
Exactly! Thx
Can I use olive oil instead of vegetable oil
@@korystickler7039 I think so. It has high burn point.
Awesome 👌
Thank you!
So, after the final seasoning, do you clean/wipe off the excess gunk oils from the surfaces?
If hot enough, it should burn off. I re oil occasionally but not season.
What do you do when the grates rust
Mine have not rusted at all. I’ve used them so much too.how often do you season them?
A basting brush might work too...
Oh yeah!
you didnt put oil on the silver pipe burners and the black heat covers ?
Hmm... I must have missed that in the instructions. I know I installed the chimney on the outside and should have come from the inside. Ha!
Spray option might be more efficient.
Never tried it. Thx
I use crisco on my cast iron. Could you use crisco for this process too?
Absolutely!
Only need to do this once?
I reoil it yearly but not full season. Thanks.
Should we burn off manufacturing chemicals and residue first and then cure it?
Nope same time!
Oh yeah, some serious good eatin is gonna take place. My smoker has been cured with several racks of ribs. I open that bad boy and is smells of pure goodness. Enjoy that beast.
Castle Hives thanks! That’s the best way is to keep using it with some nice greasy meat. Love it!
He’s like me use that paper towel till there is no more but we’re not Mickey one paper towel per one drying car
Haha! So true!
I don’t think my first comment posted... should we burn off manufacturing residues before curing?
It will do both at the same time. No worries.
I think you put the chimney on the outside instead of inside
I sure did! Oops! Thx.

Michael Sherman now that’s a grill!!!
Seasoned correctly will stand up to 900 drgrees..
Does it have to be oil? Does Skoal spit work? It kinda looks like oil.😂
Ernie Hatmaker hmm not that kind of oil young lady!
@@RidgeLife Hehe...
🤣🤣🤣

All good but I would suggest using a clean rag instead of paper towels.
Good point. Thx.
