Rambling About Mushoku Tensei for 27 Minutes Because I Am Frustrated

- This clip is from an upcoming episode of my Seasonal Wrap-Up Show series, but I felt like posting this one early just to be a bit more timely and maybe stir the pot a bit cause I'm bored lol.
If the anime is 2D picture, than the novel is freaking 7D infinitely detailsed manifold. I liked the first season. It wasn't phenomenonal, but it was genuinely good. Then when the second season aired, I didn't want to wait the next episode and that made me go to the novel. I started reading and I could not stop until I've read the whole story. When I watched the remaining part of season 2 part 1, I felt robbed. They cutted out so much. And then I returned to the first season. And there I saw the cuts too. They had cut out pure gold. The anime now feels blunt for me and dissatisfing. It's just so flat and crumpled.
Of course you will be unsatisfied with anime. It just leaves out so much. The stuff that make character choices make sense. I ask you - read the novel. You will not regret it.
Even before this season aired, Roxy was a case that always made me go "Wait, how's that gonna work?".
The novels are 10/10
The problem is people using our world morality on a fantasy world.

instead of shutting your brain and fapping to underaged girls who the author beds over backwards to become Rudeus's little playthings. Ah right. But we cannot possibly use logic and reason as the setting of the show is not modern day! Genius! take asshat
it makes more sense that Roxy is added to the family in the nove where a few things were explainde:
- rudeus was tricked by Elinalise to think she was pregnant and found out she wasn't moments before the walkout scene
- sylphy spent all her childhood seeing poligamy working with rudeus' family and royals
- sylphy wouldn't let just anyone join, she's the leader of the house, if nanahoshi was the one she'd kick her ass
overall I didn't like how it was handled so swiftly but it makes more sense when he thought she was going away with a child just like lilia was about to, and to set aside some of your worries, no spoilers, his family becomes the core of his motivation as a person. they are not set aside as side characters and have their own arcs and development. they are not his fuck toys and that will be made VERY clear by the next season
the grope scene:
- it's obviously bad, no question, rudeus is far from being a decent human being at this point
- he feels nothing sexual, and the girls know it cause beastfolk can sense that instantly, rudeus was less pleased than by the joy obtained when petting a dog
- the water bucket was far more offensive to them, which is what makes this interesting, their culture sees this simple act as worse than assault yet he sees the opposite
this isn't an excuse, just one of those cases where rudeus does something bad, but in this world, that other thing he did is considered worse and in his confusion, he realises his mistakes, like when he got a kid killed in the demon continent, ruijerd excused him for seeing the kid as a warrior, but rudeus does not forgive himself. he's learning to be human again after decades of his life being porn games where he did that and got rewarded. He doesn't always get punished but even then he realises he did wrong
overall, good review and I hope you keep giving it a shot, the best is yet to come and it's fucking good.

As a novel reader I can point out some details that can help you understand about some of the stuff you are complaining about.
First I'll start off with the problems you have with the heroines you mentioned about them being boring/ make them interesting and not just a Rudeus pleaser.
First off with sylphy, she separated from Rudeus early on the story then the mana displacement happened, when Rudeus taught her magic and helped her from the bullies she started like rudeus and want to grow up and marry him which now then clears the idea on why she is very happy and may seem over pleasing.
Now with Roxy, Roxy has been adventuring and tutoring to learn more about magic and to be able to research more. Roxy's dream has always been falling in love with a guy who will rescue her in a labyrinth, it's her reason for adventuring( which is what happened in with Rudeus) Roxy is from a long lived race and this is also in a medieval setting, so they don't really think much of age differences especially if you are a long lived race x human so that teacher thing x student doesn't really bother them when taking all of this information into matters.
Now that were done with pointing out their dreams lets go to the "not a realistic polygamous relationship" "this isn't how things will turn out in reality"
Sylphy grew up with paul, zenith and lilia which is obviously poly then after the mana displacement she became Ariel's bodyguard. By being Ariel's bodyguard you will meet nobles, kings etc that has plenty of slaves and wives since this is in a medieval setting. So the term polygamy is obviously not new to her.
BUT Rudeus cheated which in no matter what setting is a horrible thing to do but why did Sylphy forgave Rudeus and allowed Roxy to be his 2nd wife?
1. SHe love Rudeus very much 2. She is not new to this kind of relationships 3. She knows Rudeus would never abandon her 4. Paul died and no one could have gotten Rudeus to recover if it wasn't for Roxy. 5 her relationship with Aisha and Lilia 6 Rudeus always talked about Roxy as his savior , teacher and master.
Still this aren't justifications, it's just some details to factor in. It is still ultimately because of Sylphy's kind and gentle character that this situation did not go for the worse.
And most importantly this a work of fiction there are some people who reviews MT in a negative light because they seem to project their reality into this work of fiction.
It's important to note that if it was Nanahoshi who Rudeus asked to be his 2nd wife Sylphy would go crazy lol.
Now for how their characters are going to be interesting and developed It will be shown in the next seasons but In a non spoiler way
Sylphy's character would head into direction of developing as a Mother - Rudeus as a father and a fighter - Roxy as a teacher
Now with Roxy's panties lol and Sylphys sheet that's just Rudeus classic pervyness which you have to get used to, honestly there are far more disturbing characters out there which is why I am surprised on why people nitpick at this, indeed it is disturbing and disgusting but there's really no harm in it some may argue that this is bad for young audiences, Well this anime isn't supposed to be watched by young kids anyway.
In the linia and pursena groping part, it's important to know that Linia and pursena are basically bullies and scares students in their campus if Rudeus was a normal student he would have been beaten up by them. Rudeus punishment was really more on the kinder side if you think about what other people would have done to them, Sylphy was not really fine with Rudeus groping them that's why she compromised in a another method.
Also for the Roxy peeing part I don't really remember reading that part in the novel so yeah I'm weirded out on why they included that in the anime.
Now lastly with Zenith it will all be explained in future arcs about her character and situation.
I'm praying that the reason why they dropped the quality of some episodes in this season is for the epic scenes that will happen in the next season.
I hope I was able to help you with this information. I don't really blame people for reviewing some parts of MT in a negative light but I think it's best if people knew the whole context before they make a conclusion with their opinions.

Oh boy. Sylphy is a really amazing character in the novels. I'm saddened that you've interpreted her as a shallow and overly Rudy pleasing person because the shows portrayal is too reliant on subtext.
Does Sara impact your opinions at all?
Sara is great actually and works well as a catalyst for invoking Rudeus' immaturity, even if I felt the moment of him gloating to Soldat felt a little bit forced.
Subtext and subtle animations is how they include a lot of information and nuance from the novels and if people are incapable of picking up on that, it can hamper their understanding of what’s really going on. It’s definitely an anime you should watch more than once in that respect.

Seen the assassination attempt that succeeded in the snow past the checkpoint where Fitz is their only chance and fails? They sure included every detail.

You don't seem to understand the different between "not understanding the significance of something" and "understanding why it's there but still thinking it's fucking stupid and weird." This dude has a mental age of almost 50 and he's treating someone's panties he stole like a holy relic. That is a severe and very creepy neurosis that the narrative does not do nearly enough to show how fucking weird it is.

That is not in any way what I said in this moment and you know it. None of those events are punishments for Rudeus being a bad person because they are not caused by his immoral actions. They're just things that happen as a result of the teleport incident and Rudeus deciding to be an adventurer. That is not the narrative punishing him for being a bad person because there is no connection between those things.
@@EmberUnplugged There's nothing less realistic than a character getting punished for everything wrong they do. That's just childish wishful thinking. Tons of people in the world do horrible things and never see any consequences. Plus, wrong doing is subjective. Different people, different points in time and different cultures see things in a different light. A lot of things Rudeus has done through his life are just on the level of childish pranks not worth that much fuss (specially outside the US and in older age groups).

I feel like I made it abundantly clear very quickly that I do like this show overall. In the first minute I literally said I was going to give it a positive rating, but I also have a lot of very detailed and complicated critiques that significantly dampen the experience for me. During high school I actually used to be a mushoku tensei fan, I read the manga and even the novels, I was ruffing on that copium all day long, but the straw that broke the camel's back was when Rudeus cheated on his wife (which just got adapted, by the way). In retrospect, Rudeus ogling slaves when he was already in retrospect Rudeus ogling slaves when he was already in college should have been a given that he wasn't getting redeemed, but I still had faith in the series, but when he cheated on his wife, I got another wife, and that's when the whole illusion came scrabbling down, because if the MC of a redemption story can do something so bad and get permanently rewarded, then that isn't the MC of a redption story, that is the MC of a power fantasy
the worst part is that in the novels, the narrator implies that Rudy and Roxy had to do it for the sake of his mental health LMAO, I don't think even Spider-Man's webs can reach that far lol, just because sex is related to mental health, it does not follow, that Rudy would go from being in a state of Dysthymia to basically being [reset-to-factory-setting] the next morning, otherwise psychiatry would be a lot easier
And it also doesn't follow that Rudy had to cheat right there and then or else he would die, that's bullshit, and I promise you can search the entirety of Google Scholar, but there is no golden widow where you immediately need to have sex/cheat on your wife or else you get permanent anhedonia, that shit doesn't exist.

oh, and I hate when I hear fans of the story defending this shit by saying that crap about how "not everything bad in life gets punished" MY DUDE THE AUTHOR WROTE THE STORY, NONE OF THIS ACCIDENTALLY APPEARED OUT OF THIN AIR! he should have a reason why big events in his story happen, even if it's to say sometimes bad things go unpunished, but that's not what the story is trying to say, just a volume after this we get a reward chapter for Rudy when he goes on a date with a "flower on each hand" THAT'S REWARDING CHEATING FOR NO REASON (besides bending backwards to try to go for the easy way out, by being a cowardly story that goes for a harem ending so it doesn't have to make an actual decision, or seriously punish the MC)
sorry for the long rant, considering that the anime just adapted the breaking point of the series for me, my dislike for mushoko tensei is back at an all time high

You seem to be ignoring the characters and who they are. It is incredibly horrible for Rudeus to cheat on Sylphy. And he apologizes greatly and shows it sincerely. But Sylphy forgives him and even goes so far as to say she saw this coming anyways. And in all honesty, Sylphy has a good point. Rudeus is a pervert. He has been perving on people his entire life. Sylphy already knows the type of person Rudeus is. But it's because she knows who he is that she accepts him. She has accepted him when they were kids. She accepted him when he was at his lowest when they reunited. She accepted him despite all the faults he showed. Sylphy also knows who Roxy is. It's not like Rudeus just randomly cheated on some unknown girl. Sylphy understood that Roxy was his teacher, his savior, and someone he highly respects. Sylphy greatly cares about Rudeus and his opinions and perspective. So if he talks very highly of someone, then of course she would also think very highly of them.
As far as the writing that leads to Roxy and Rudeus's infidelity, it wasn't about Rudeus dying that you seem to overexaggerate to make a point. Would it have lead to his death? Most likely, due to his depression and eventual demise. No, the sex was not for his mental health. Rudeus just lost his father and has completely shut his heart off from everything. He pretty much faced his trauma once more and went into the darkest pits of his mind. It's not like Roxy HAD to have sex with Rudeus in order for his mental health to heal. There were other avenues that would most likely take months or potentially years of rehabilitation for Rudeus. Roxy had sex with Rudeus because it was the only way she had in order to try and help him move on AS WELL as her ulterior motives of taking advantage of his moment of weakness. It was her putting forth all of her feelings and emotions. She loved Rudeus and wanted to be with him. And so she decided to do the one thing that would show her feelings towards him. You know how actions are louder than words sometimes? Nothing anyone would have said to Rudeus was going to bring him from the pits of despair. He was at the absolute lowest he has ever been throughout all the series thus far. He was seriously contemplating suicide after the whole situation with Sara. But seeing he was too weak and he watched his father die in front of him? At that point, he literally couldn't even bring himself to suicide or do anything. Just exist. After he went into Roxy's embrace and woke up the morning after, he thinks about his situation because he was brought back to a moment of clarity and peace of mind. He was brought out of the pits of despair because he slept with someone he highly respected and regarded as his teacher and savior. It's something that is highly impactful to his life and is fresh on his mind other than his father's death.
Is it unrealistic? Probably. Kind of the point of fiction. The series wasn't meant to be realistic. Not in the slightest. And there are many other popular examples of shows that does the same thing. Extremely traumatic event happens to MC? MC goes either berserk or becomes immensely depressed. MC is reminded of what he has left and what he has to live for and he gathers the strength to move on. It's still a very common trope.
And it seems like you didn't finish the novel or you forgot what happens. This wasn't a redemption story. Far from it quite honestly. It definitely propped itself up to be a redemption story, but later on in the novel you will realize that it was not a redemption story. It was a coming-of-age story of Rudeus coming to terms with life, himself, and what it means to be happy and fulfilled. And part of it was overcoming his issues that happened in his previous life and being able to grow as a person. And it is very apparent when after having his polygamy, he actually very much mellowed out, matured, and proceeded to live on with life. Because being a parent and growing a family generally does change a person greatly if he actually cares about people. Especially when he genuinely does have a pure love for his wives.
Edit: Future Rudeus also pretty much explains the type of person Rudeus is at this point of the story of him cheating on Sylphy in all honesty. Man literally just starts to kill the world off after losing Roxy, cheating on Sylphy and being depressed, and then learning of Sylphy's death.
