Bea : any theories why Portuguese has the aspirated " R "....? Unlike Spanish
where the " R " is very strongly pronounced.?

Olá! There are several theories about the aspirated 'R' in Brazilian Portuguese. I remember one of my professors mentioning that during Brazil's colonization period (19th century), when Rio de Janeiro was the capital, it was considered glamorous by society to adopt a French-like pronunciation. France was seen as the center of refinement, fashion, and intellectual life. One of these influences was the aspirated or guttural "R," which mirrored the French "R" sound. But as I said, it is one of several theories.😊

Thanks Bea.!! That's possible . I shall investigate more ....I also wonder if Brazilian
      Portuguese pronunciation has changed over
the last century.? We would need to.hear some voice recordings from 1920s / 30s..?
Maybe you have already heard some.?
Thanks for taking time to answer. I'm sure you have many other things to do...!!
