    Something that had to be cut for time were some flashbacks of Ekko attempting to rescue Powder from Silco and her refusing. It’s why she calls him “The Boy Savior”. It’s also why Ekko is so convinced that Powder is gone, because he’s already tried and failed to reach her.

      I would've liked to see that, but I think it flows better this way. Any more or less scenes in the show, and it wouldn't flow this amazingly. It's perfect just the way it is.

    • @thewhatness
      @thewhatness ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think the context we get from this episode is plenty, as well. He's very literally the boy savior in the sense that he singlehandedly created a safe haven for those in The Lanes and started anew, saving his people from worse fates.

      Where is the source for this? It's not mentioned in Bridging the Rift.
      I have doubts about it being real, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
      But a source would be amazing.

    • @therren9981

      @@jonteguy I wasn't able to quickly find the original interview, the interview I looked through either didn't have that part or I skipped past it without realizing. Here is a clip I was able to find though: th-cam.com/video/K3VCQRO4850/w-d-xo.html
      It is from Toonholic and they give their opinion on what it would have added had it stayed in, but I believe leaving us in the dark on why Jinx calls him "The Boy Savior" does a better job with fleshing out the world than by spoon-feeding us every meaning for every word. It leaves the option open for Christian and Alex to change what was going on (maybe next season?), and creates more engagement with the story where people would hear that line, hear the way Jinx spits it out, and then collectively theorize on what happened. Did she really hate that he tried to take her away from Silco? Or was it the way that he did it? Does she instead call him that because of how he is actively opposing Silco's business, maybe thinking he's a hypocrite for wanting to stop Silco's violence but by opposing Silco just creates more violence? Without the deleted scene there are plenty of ideas (good and bad) that you could come away with, but if it was added it would severely limit our imaginations.

    The end scene where Ekko had Jinx. She resigned herself to die. The animation in this show is so amazing that you could see she was apologizing to Ekko just before releasing the grenade. That has to be my favorite subtle reaction in this whole show. And that's even counting the little squeeze with the Vi/Caitlyn hug...

  • @kenjutsukata1o1
    @kenjutsukata1o1 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    So I noticed a detail in this episode that I'm not completely sure was on purpose (though knowing the showrunners/animators it probably was): Ekko's face is designed with a lot of sharp and hard angles as an adult, as opposed to when he was a boy where he had very round features. Then, when Ekko stops pummeling Jinx when he recognizes Powder in there, all of the angular parts of his design soften into more rounded ones, as if the hardened and jaded person he had become disappeared for a moment and returned him to the more positive, hopeful little boy he used to be. It's honesty just a subtle play of the light, but I swear I see it and want to believe it was on purpose.

    • @ChipnChep
      @ChipnChep ปีที่แล้ว +11

      pretty sure it's by design, because they intentionally did the same thing with Jinx there, making her look more like Powder when she's on the ground (they go into a bit more detail in the amazing "making of"-show 'Bridging the Rift' - on youtube)

    • @Lionimia
      @Lionimia ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The characters are animated using 3D models so Ekko's face would be molded and painted over a wire mesh, so whatever you're seeing is probably deliberate.

    • @nutrybe
      @nutrybe ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ChipnChep Yeah, you can definitely see it in her eyes, eyebrows and mouth. When she's...unwell, those features are very sharp and angular but when she reverts to "Powder" in scenes where she's unsure of herself or afraid...those features soften a lot and are a little more full and rounded. It makes sense that they would do the same with Ekko seeing as he's sort of the "anti-Jinx" and her best friend when they were kids. I don't think the animators do that with any other characters either.

    • @kenjutsukata1o1
      @kenjutsukata1o1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Lionimia True, when it comes down to animation stuff like that can't really happen on accident. It's just crazy to think that an animation/direction team can be so detailed as to think to include such subtle details like that.

    • @Pizvo
      @Pizvo ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They had adjustable rigs for character faces so they can blend in their facial features from when they were kids into the adult models. That's one of the most powerful yet subtle visual cue in the show.

  • @williamhouser5715

    Jayce's Fatal Flaw, in the tragic sense, is that he wants to always do the right thing. He has no firm convictions, so he is easily swayed to whatever seems like the best path right now.
    Also, during the bridge scene, when Jinx fires the machine gun at Cait and Vi, watch their reactions frame by frame, it shows something about their characters. Cait trys to put herself in front of Vi to block the hit so that Vi isn't hurt, but Vi pushes Cait away so that they both aren't hurt. Little micro-moment touches like that is one of the things I love about this show.

  • @ChipnChep

    Victor saying "there's always a choice" right before CHOOSING to disarm the bomb is such a great scene. He clearly stops to think when the bomb powers up, but the way he diffuses it shows that he is not concerned with disarming it, it is whether or not ending things now might be better for all.

    If you still obsess over Arcane after the season is over, there's always the cinematic trailers to league of legends you could check out. The three big ones are "Awaken" from 2019, "warriors" from 2020 and "the call" from 2022. They aren't necessarily related to arcane directly, but instead shows off characters and locations from all over the world.
    Who knows, you might even see some familiar faces.

    Don't worry about losing it with this episode. This was a literal roller coaster of emotions. Every time you think you might be able to get a hold of your emotions they smack you in the face with something you never saw coming. Then, just as you finally feel that you can un pause the show, the bridge fight kicks off and your eye dry out because you can't afford to blink. Then, in typical Arcane fashion, they leave you with a cliff hanger that makes you want to kick in your TV.

    The thing that got me hooked even more on this show style wise, was not only the visuals in the beginning sequence, but the one near the end during the fight between Ekko and Jinx.
    It's just so, so good, and very appealing to watch that everytime I rewatch it I can't help but simply sit and stare in awe. Seeing the show don't tell confirmation that the Jinx that everyone knew as Powder before truly died that day with the events that took place in and around the factory.
    It is something that the majority of people watching this show had already concluded, and I think it did a good job of showing how Ekko had that same conclusion but Vi doesn't want to accept it. This episode was heavy and filled to the brim with good character moments, and I think sets up what's to come fairly well.
    Also as an additional last note, love the fact that you pointed out the conversation between Caitlyn, Vi, and Ekko and how what she said there may have solidified your decision for her to be tied with Vi in being your favorite character because same!!

    Something extra from the chats between characters in game. Nothing really spoilery but they are not mentioned in the series either. In the game, when Ekko and Jinx interacts, Ekko says that he liked her until she started talking to the guns. So, they were good childhood friends and Ekko had a crush on Powder, which makes the final scene only more emotional.

    I absolutely love Mel's character once I took the time to understand her more. The sad reality is she is probably right. Pretty much every new technology that gets created will be utilized as a weapon if given enough time. Hextech will sadly be used as a weapon in short order, either by the Undercity or some other country in the world. You can either accept that reality and prepare for it ahead of time or be destroyed for your inaction. It is just the sad reality we see in our own world also. We invent steel, we create swords. We invent fireworks, we create bombs and guns. We invent the ability to fly, we create fighter planes. We discover nuclear energy, we create the atomic bomb. Nobody says you have to use things things, but nothing is saying someone else won't.

We see Silco literally taking away the air he has given his people because of their disloyalty and killing the plants, the source of the fresh air, in the process. Meanwhile Ekko is stationed with the Firelights in and around a tree, giving them a place to breathe quite literally.

    This is an excellent reaction, and it was well worth the wait. I love the analyses you give the characters and their actions in the show.
    I think as much as Caitlin and Vi work well together and have amazing chemistry, I'm noticing some hope and pain mixed because as you said Cait talks more like Vander in this episode. It makes me think because of that, Vi is afraid to get attached fully. As someone whose seen what come well...
    Also, I think going through this, the Golden rule of television applies to Jinx too. We don't watch her die, so it's nice to see your past and present selves respectively process that information.
    I do want to ask a question since you mentioned the soundtrack: what's your favorite song (so far) if you haven't listened to it all yet?
    Also, this comment is getting really long, but I have two more semi related notes. First is I've sent some art and thank yous via Gmail since I can't afford Patreon at the moment and would still like to express my support!
    Second, we had an ice storm here that knocked the power out for about 18 hours, and the house temperature dropped drastically. One of your hoodies really saved me from freezing since it went comfortably over my clothes without being too restrictive, so thank you so much for that, indirectly maybe, but still.

    With Marcus, I find it strange that so many are avidly against him when his predicament is one that everyone watching could fall into. He made one arrogant, self-righteous call--oblivious to the ramifications--to try and get Vander arrested and it blew up in his face, causing a series of unfortunate events that unknowingly allowed Silco to own him. It's a toxic mirror to the relationship Grayson and Vander had, only instead of being based on mutual respect, Silco has the ability to leverage Marcus into doing as he bids lest he makes his daughter an orphan in the process.
    Body language and non-verbal cues go a long way to painting Marcus as someone trapped in a box, who, although learning quickly the error of his ways, has no real means of escaping it and can only watch as the box gets smaller. He undermines Silco at every opportunity and constantly fights him in the small ways he can. He's never okay with any of what he has to do, but Silco holds all the cards. That's precisely why we're shown his guilt in the alley right after Grayson is killed ("That wasn't part of the deal!", slamming the coins down and hunching over in defeat). It's precisely why he's shown carrying and reflecting upon a coin with Grayson's blood on it. Why he's full of shame at the funeral when Ren asks him about Grayson. Why he throws the shot glass across the room. Why he sees himself in the mirror and slams down his sheriff's badge angrily. Why he argues with Silco constantly until he shows up in his house with Ren. Why he lies about what happened to Vi. Why he can't truly pull the pin on the grenade. Why he tells Caitlyn to stay away from her investigation and why he's fighting so hard not to shoot her on the bridge. Silco even mentions it twice, once when he wanted to pull the grenade and again when Marcus leaves and Silco says he's "faltering" and needs Jinx to speed up production on the weapon.
    It's easily to dislike Marcus' initial actions, but it's sad to see so many people watching dismiss every ounce of characterization and storytelling that happens during and after Episode 3. There are no one-dimensional players in Arcane--and that includes Marcus.

    • @RayramAureanBlue
      @RayramAureanBlue ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well put. Markus clearly looked up to Grayson as a model for what an upstanding police officer was supposed to be. The blood on the coins is perhaps a biblical representation of the betrayal he dealt and the guilt of it afterwards, like he had become Judas selling out his mentor for coin.

    As to Mel (Medarda) and Jayce, it is a sad but real state of affairs that even when there is genuine feeling between a couple, that does not mean that attempts to mold one another or control one another do not take place. It's not necessarily healthy, but it's still a common stereotype, and not one that is without roots in reality, that men marry expecting their bride never to change, whereas women marry expecting to change their groom. It doesn't generally work out. Everyone changes, but attempts to guide that change through some kind of cultivation are risky. Mostly it seems to end in resentment.
    The point is - I think Mel probably has genuine feelings for Jayce. She's also trying to "guide" him through a challenging political reality, where "guide" reads an awful lot like "steer". Partially justified, in that Jayce is exceptionally clueless in matters political, all the while playing a game at deadly stakes - he's very much playing the "game of thrones", without fully realizing it, and screwing up can easily cost a great many lives, and so Mel is right in trying to get him through it in one piece. But she's not fully internalized how terrifyingly, uncannily and unrealisttically good Jayce is at ANYTHING he even remotely sets his mind to. Inventions and magic? No sweat. Politics? Brokers complex deals and forms alliances with the best of them. Other things he's never shown any practice at but will somehow be inexplicably good at in episode 8? You betcha. Leading him around by his nose won't end well, I think.
    In the end... I think both things can be true. Mel probably REALLY likes Jayce. She's also trying to install a steering wheel in the back of his head.

In the game Ekko has a line when he interacts with Jinx that goes "I had a crush, until you started talking to the gun". Looking down an all he's seeing is his first love Powder instead of Jinx.

    It's much more Jinx singing the song of the begining, it's Jinx singing the same song, on the same bridge, and shooting an injured Enforcer the same heartless way than an Enforcer shooted a rioter back in the days. For Jinx, she still have this hatred of Pitlover that Vi showed when she was kid.

    Back to corruption, hymendinger, there aren't any real good guys or bad guys in this show, just sides and people's different forms of corruption. His is fear, he's afraid of the walking apocalypse... Something you said in this video made me realize one little factor I missed and if my prediction turns out to be true it is a doozy. It's like when someone really needs a hero, and I feel bad for them because all they have is me there keeping them alive. Heroes suck anyway.

    since you are enjoying Arcane so much, i'd suggest checking out the five-part docuseries, Bridging the Rift, on the League of Legends YT channel~

    I'd understand if you didn't wish to react to this video, since it's 2 hours long. But it'd be cool if you posted a reaction to a very entertaining and professional review by Blue Order called *How Star vs. the Forces of Evil Fell From Grace*

    dont go on a deep dive yet. there are potential spoilers for Season 2 out there that will potentially ruin the surprise
    u know, people with knowledge of the games speculating. That ruined some future surprises to me :/

    Can you react to Bridging the Rift after this!? I think you'd really like it, especially if you need more Arcane Content in your life after you finish season 1. Which my guess is, you will!

    I don't think it's possible to overuse "heartbreaking" when describing Arcane.

    It's so sad how delusional Caitlyn is about the goodness of Topside. She believes with her whole heart that Jayce and Cassandra will want to do the right thing. Even Marcus. But this belief is what gets Ekko hurt, and part of what separates Vi from Jinx again.

    It's always interesting to see and hear people going "oh no Viktor will use shimmer, whatever will we do" like... lots of people are seen using shimmer and while it's not necessarily super healthy, it seems mostly to work out fine. I'd concern myself more with trying to use the hexcore, you know, the thing that rapidly grows and then kills plants without fail. Both he and Singed were postulating that he use shimmer merely to SURVIVE that. So which is more scary? The moderately addictive substance that seems to be a very strong medicine and performance enhancer, or the magical puzzle box that kills everything affected by it?
