Dimmu Borgir basically writes classical music with a backing black metal band. The orchestra plays the melody throughout. And yeah, they're a Bucket List performance.

A much better track record than I. I've seen them twice and both times were epically bad, although these were the "golden age of Dimmu Borgir line-up then". First time in 2005 at the Fury Fest (then soon to become Hellfest), and the playing conditions were not great that day, but Samael and Epica had both just pushed through so I thought Dimmu would be gravy, and I was SO excited to see them (after watching their DVD World Misanthropy over and over, I kinda had expectations), but boy, they not only didn't wanna be there, the sound was so bad it took me till the chorus to recognize Vredesbyrd. I blamed the festival conditions and gave it another try a couple of years later, this time on a tour with Amon Amarth ( not nearly as well know at the time), and playing at a venue. They also didn't wanna be there, Shagrath was out of breath and putting in the least amount of effort possible. Vortex and Galder were the only two "trying". Amon Amarth stole the show though so it was still a good time. It's just a huge downer when one of your favourite bands, known for their epic live shows, fail to deliver.
I am yet to be able to give them an honest "3rd try" live but since the new album just came out, perhaps on a tour supporting it.

I remember when I first heard this track on Total Rock Radio, aged 16 in 2003, and I was blown away.. I was a Dimmu fan already, and this was before their 'Death Cult Armageddon' release. I was also inspired symphonic metal, as I was and still am a keyboardist, and was massively inspired by tracks like this. When the live version came out, I again was blown away twice by this incredible song. Great reaction, and thank you from the UK.

A fun fact, "Dimmu Borgir" is a volcanic formation in the North of Iceland and means "Dark Fortress"
Speaking of Iceland, they have produced some incredible musicians/bands. If you want something really different, look at the live performance of Sigur Ros doing "Olsen Olsen" from their DVD "Heima", the music and scenery of Iceland is just magical! SR was my inspiration to visit Iceland in 2013.
I also recommend Solstafir's "Farja", the official video is very cool, they are along the lines of Dimmu Borgir.
On the "classical" side anything by Olafur Arnalds is just beautiful!
