Indiana Jones in Real Life | The Ruins of YAXCHILAN, Chiapas Mexico
Yaxchilan's original name was likely Pa' Chan. The name Yaxchilan means "Green Stones" in one of the local Mayan languages. The city was a very active and prosperous place for hundreds of years and dates back to the year 320 CE up to around the year 800 CE. Yaxchilan was in a strategic trade region being right on the river, and it had many wars with rival cities such as Piedras Negras, Palenque, Tikal, and maybe even Tonina. Yaxchilan is significant in modern Maya archeology because of the exquisite preservation of its sculptures. In particular the door lintels of its temples.
Getting to Yaxchilan is really an adventure in and of itself. This place is so off grid. To be completely honest you will probably feel a bit out of your comfort zone coming here. I know we sure did. This place was so hard to get to, but is by far one of my favorite places I've ever been. Hard things are worth doing!
Why only 2 hours? Is there an option to be there more hours?
That was the boat schedule. You may be able to find or pay for a longer time.
I'm mexican and I've had the fortune to be able to visit many remote and "off-the-grid" archaeological sites throughout my country, and I can really tell you that Yaxchilan is a class of it's own.
Last time I went was in December 2019 and we had the luck of being the only ones in the site, it was such an amazing experience

I visited there about 20 years ago and I loved it. There were a couple homes on the water. There were about 6 of us total on the site.

Eventhough I know that its helping preserve mesoamerican culture it just grinds my gears that many amazing treasures and art from my country are in other countries.
Everytime I go to London & Paris & visit their museums I make sure & tell them it is time to give the stolen treasures back

We have been to 25 or so sites but this was one of the best a total adventure! It was so remote and a lot of people never come here. We loved this trip with your family great experiences! Im glad we didn't get bit by anything (that we know of) So interesting to see how advanced and incredible the Maya were!
It was an amazing trip for sure! We need to do it again in the future. I would love to visit Piedras Negras next time. Also on my list is La Danta in Guatemala.

We were in Chiapas a couple weeks ago and visited a number of ruins including Bonapak, and here. While Bonapak had the great frescoes, this one was my favorite also. Loved the bats, and whipped scorpions, although I didn't know what they were called until I watched your video. Love all of your videos I have watched so far. Very well done.

Theres a bridge in yaxchilan. It is recognized as the longest concrete bridge ever made in the world. Until the 14th century in rome.

I throughly have enjoyed your videos. Did you travel Hwy 199 from Palenque or 307 to Comitan. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. We are in Palenque now.
We took 307 all the way around. It was a really rough, and really long road though. I'd probably only go that route if you want to visit Las Nubes on the way back, or if you are visiting other places like Las Guacamayas or Lagos de Montebello. 199 always has roadblocks.
@@OurMillionAdventures Currently 199 which as you know is so twisty, under construction and children roadblocks. We are hoping 307 as a better alternative? Your videos have been a tremendous help for things to do while here. Love the BYU hat, we're from Heber, UT. If you know where that's at.
Well, I don't know that "better" is the word I'd use, ha ha. When we drove 307 it was under MAJOR construction. A very large section was gravel and there was another spot that had potholes that could literally swallow a car. It was hands down the worst road we've ever driven. We made it through but it was very slow. I don't know if all the construction is still there. You'll still be swerving all over the road regardless, as there are big potholes on both sides. There is also no reputable gas most of the way till you get to towns on the other side of the Lacandon. Definitely top off at Benemerito de las Americas if you decide to go that way. There were no roadblocks when we traveled 307, but there are a few military checkpoints because you are right on the border. 199 is a much better maintained road, and definitely shorter. With that said there are some very beautiful vistas and scenery towards the bottom of the state that you'll go through on 307. Las Nubes is amazing and Cascadas Ojo de Agua are also pretty amazing. 307 is definitely the road less traveled. It does have some twisty parts too through the mountains after you cross the Rio Ixcan military checkpoint. Also be aware that if you come in through Comitan on that side you will have to pass through a government agricultural inspection station. They may want to see your papers and ask you questions.
@@OurMillionAdventures I am going to Palenque/Bom/Yax in October & read that Hwy 307 is dangerous & should not be driven after dusk, do you ave any experience with this? Is it possible to drive from Palenque early AM & see YAX & Bom then return to Palenque in the same day
I would definitely not drive it after dark. That goes for most all of Mexico. You are going to have a very long day to get both Yaxchilán and Bonampak in and return to Palenque, but it can be done. It is about 3 hours from Palenque to Frontera Corozal where you get on a boat to Yaxchilan. The boat ride is about an hour there and then you have about an hour at the ruins and an hour back. So that's already 6 hours of your day gone. I would get up at 5 or 6am and be there for the first boat. Bonampak is going to be probably another 3 hours depending on how long you stay. That is why we stayed in the Lacandon at Tres Lagunas.
Been there, done that. It was a nice day when we went. 🤣 Tikal is still the greatest Mayan ruin ever.
I still haven't been to Tikal yet but look forward to it!
