Learn about song structure, it's important to be aware of that, and have a good knowledge of music theory because that will help enormously too. Listen to a lot of music and think about what makes it good - listen to how the melodies go in good songs, even listen to what kinds of intervals and phrases they use and then work out why they sound good. That way you can unlock the elements you need to make a good song.

Am I the only one who (tries to) sing the lyrics while the song plays?
