    Dunlop Echoplex Delay is the very best Authentic sounding Echoplex tape Delay

  • @sexyguitarboy69
    @sexyguitarboy69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    By incorrect or over-the-top settings you can easily make one device sound worse than the next or, in this case, the previous one. The Dunlop Echoplex was set spot on, the Catalinbread's modulation was set way too high. So a noob would mislead into thinking that the Echoplex is the better choice cause it sounded just right. Which however doesn't do justice to the Catalinbread. I hope you get my point here.
    For an "ultimate shootout" I would have preferred to hear unmodulated sounds as well. In all sound examples we can hear the modulation activated. But if you play through a real tape delay you will almost hear no modulation at all. So the mod is a nice gimmick of its own, but not necessary for a genuine tape echo emulation.

    I use and own two different echoplex units, ep3 and ep4. The Dunlop in this video sounds the most like them. The wampler sounded more like an original DMM

      I agree. Ive had an ep3 and fulltone tte as well as el capistan original memory man, dm-2 and more. The mxr does sound to capture the vibe. The el cap sounds good but to me its not like an ep3.

    Dunlop (if you can't afford the $ and pedalboard real estate for the real thang). I got mine for $150AUD w/box! on Ebay
    I sold my El Cap. Didn't like my gain, and had that "Strymon sheen" over the sound which, idk, makes me think of P&W church bads.
    I love the T-Rex Replica (or TC Vintage) - it's like a perfect delay. It's digital, but has a filter control and sounds sorta analog-y and tape-y and has that digital clarity as well.

      My church band is all Nashville studio musicians. They are pretty amazing.

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have separation of Church and State, we need Separation of Church and Rock. I'm not saying that church bands can't feature great musicians, btw. I was referring to a generic sound one associates with "Praise and Worship" music (like Hillsong).

    • @mattgilbert7347
      @mattgilbert7347 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure that all you guys who go to church and play in church bands have a lot of fun and play great music and don't fall into the cheesy Hillsong camp. I wasn't trying to bash religion, just stating my feelings about the El Cap. Btw the Lovepedal Echophonic is also really good.
      Btw analog dry-thru applies when the pedal is on. It's not the same as true bypass. It means that your signal isn't being converted into digital and modelled into an analog sound. A/DA. The Nemesis Delay from Source Audio is an example of a delay with no analog dry-thru. I have one, sounds pretty good to me!

    • @oig40203
      @oig40203 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't trying to defend anything either and I get what you are saying. The ambient delay thing gets overused or at least it did. Like other genres, contemporary worship goes through phases. Personally, I use the Chase Bliss Tonal Recall (Red Knob) and Alexander History Lesson II.

    • @mouthmw
      @mouthmw 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mattgilbert7347 Never ever played in a church (I'm anti church and anti religion - ALL religion) and I use El Cap (first it was v1 and now v2). I'm a bass player first and foremost, so I like the clarity and the fact that it doesn't have a preamp. It's pure rock and roll when I go apeshit with it during psychedelic moments and there's not a drop of "church" or "worship" in my filthy, chewed up tape repeats that oscillate like a mofo.
      Nemesis is great too (had it), and they have an ADT version out now. I still go for El Cap as I prefer tape delay the most, and I still haven't heard a better tape delay in a pedal form.

    The El capistan does so much more and has a huge processing snark chip overtly designed to reproduce variant mod and real crinkle spliced up tape weirdness. The deep editing adds all manner of params the real tape delay would do, by accident and warn parts. Strymon can go from pristine tape biased machine to one falling apart with the twist of a knob and back again. Also self oscillation into infinite

    • @andivax
      @andivax ปีที่แล้ว

      The one problem. Even El Capistan doesn't skins like real tape. If you are need and don't afraid to maintain tape - go for the real deal. Ahh. And a price tag ))😊

    The Replicator is a cool idea, but every demo I’ve seen comparing it to a real tape machine (vintage or modern like Fulltone).....it sounds terrible. Then all of these digital tape machine emulations, are wobbly-smeary sounding, when in fact, tape machines have very clean repeats, with preserved transients. Sure, if the tape is beat to hell its scratchy, and there can be wow/flutter, but the degraded sound is really more of a BBD thing.
    Go listen to a shootout of an Echoplex EP-3 compared to the pedals. Its not even close. I feel like the Replicator is an analog version of the digital faux tape sound.

  • @BlueberryStinkFinger62

    Messing with my new El Capistan has only made me appreciate more the Voodoo Strymon put in this pedal. Needs to be made very clear outside this video rendering. This pedal sounds like tape recording the sound not like your basic delay pedal that adds chorus or whatever to its digital circuit. Strymon has made this thing not mimic a real tape machine but clearly sounds and "feels" exactly like behavior and tone of real tape. All a real tape unit does is begin to degrade right from first use and yes it is this degrade that gives the tape delay units their cool sounds, but when you have to replace the heads and motor drive much less eating tapes from trying to do any sort of time changes. And there is the beauty of the El Capistan, from pristine tuned new tape unit to one falling apart with the twist of a few knobs and back again w no wear to the unit! Try one out, you will be amazed how this is not your same old delay pedal.

      Why is this so annoying? It would be nice to hear them without modulation. The real tape against the others seems out of place unless you also put a real echoplex in. The digital pedals are fox representations. I like the simplicity of the echoplex.
