I have a love/hate relationship with Kodansha. They publish a lot of my favorite series, but as you said, their quality control is horrible. Plus, paper quality is usually awful. My Battle Angel Alita : Mars Chronicle volumes are different sizes and shades of red. Don't get me started on their paper quality!

Kodansha quality is so bad, more than half of my AoT volumes are either chipped or misaligned spines, and different sizes? They seriously put me off to the point i wont be buying any paperbacks from them again. Thank God they made Vinland Saga hardcover
Also Tokyo Revengers is getting printed by Seven Seas as 2-in-1s

Yeahhhhh Kodansha really needs better quality control... and I am very glad that Seven Seas picked up Tokyo Revengers, I had made this video right before they announced it 😅

I have a love-hate relationship with Dark Horse. They have such cool titles but they won't re-print them. I love Seven Seas for publishing some unpopular series and Viz never disappoints with their book quality.

I completely agree, except Viz Originals. There is specific authors they are intentionally doing a bad job printing the books. They are sold at $16.99, and considered “manga inspired graphic novels” not manga. For the authors they don’t care about (world piece) no color page at the beginning, pages look yellow, and the glue for the binding is the worst I’ve ever seen for a manga book. The one that they care about (Devil’s Candy) all of those issues are fixed and they even included a color page.

Tokyopop went under in 2008 and lost the rights or sold the rights to most of their series. They were still in production publishing in other languages for years after, but nothing in english. In the past few years, to my knowledge, Disney took them up on publishing their manga series and that's how Tokyopop started their comeback. The proceeds of that helped them get back on their feet and they've been coming out with new series now. Now I feel they are most known for their Love x Love line, BL and GL manga, though I have read a few outside of that line. I really like The Fox and Little Tanuki for example.

Have you thought about doing an updated one of these now that it is almost two years ago? I wonder if your opinion has changed on some of the publishers now

I’m really glad you made a tier list of the publishers for manga because I was planning on publishing volume one of my manga this year.

Viz also has an imprint for BL as well Sublime. Great video as well. Yen Press is also partially owned by Kadokawa as well.

Square enix p*sses me off. Why get the rights to grimgar.. only to publish 3 volumes and end it? It's just the content of the 12 ep show. I want more without having to read tens of thousands of words. Has anyone picked up vol 14.5? It's like 2.5 inches thick. There's no audio book, there's no anime, so give me a way to experience the story's beauty without having to read 19 books

Do remember that due to covid most of the publishers are facing problems in re-stocking volumes! Otherwise Viz is pretty good in re-stocking popular manga volumes quickly.
Anyways, thoroughly enjoyed the video and your opinions were pretty accurate for most of the publishers.

awesome to hear your insights on this! i pretty much agree with all your opinions, and don't worry yen press is not high on my list either lol,, regarding tokyo pop i was also fuzzy on their timeline and what licenses they still own, i was surprised to see some of their series on that kodansha survey about what we want printed physically like initial d so interesting to see if we ever get reprints of stuff like gto, i know they are releasing new editions in spanish for gto but the english publishers always seem to be so behind on trends for some reason like with tokyo revengers i swear the german print is on like volume 10 already, but regardless great video! idk what a tier list would look like for me, probably the same as yours other than dark horse im indifferent about since i don't own any series from them and i may bump up denpa bc their releases are so high quality even if they take FOREVER to release stuff

Glad you enjoyed the vid! I was def inspired by your manga publishers video as well, glad we have similar opinions and yeah I wish kodansha listened to the fans more but I can’t deny the amount of great series they do publish so yeah... also I can see Denpa being higher in the tier list for me in the future when they publish a bit more stuff!

    • @BlueTempest

Oh and another realization I had about yen press that I didn’t mention in the video is that with them I’m more skeptical of starting to collect a series like yowamushi pedal because if a volume is out of stock not only will it be forever till it’s back in stock, but there’s a bigger possibility of it just randomly going out of print and never actually coming back in stock in the first place. Whereas with Viz, even if a series is really hard to find / out of stock everywhere (examples being slam dunk, yuyu Hakusho, & Monster) I can have more confidence in them that those series WILL be restocked eventually even if it takes a while.

    • @tsukkinotes
      @tsukkinotes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@BlueTempest true true definitely more of a risk with yen press (i was going to say smaller publishers but yen press is not small 💀) way more trust in viz in that aspect and you can usually find the expected restock dates on barnes and noble etc for their series

this type of video was different from your other videos and i personally really liked it you should do more of these, on another note these rankings were really solid👍🏼 although i don’t have manga from all of these publishers i know what to expect now with them so thanks!

Dark Horse can be one of the most frustrating publishers because they allow so many series to go out of print

This video was so cool! I definelety agreed with your opinions about it! :) I had an love and hate releationship for Kodansha as well! :') For Seven Seas,i really love an series that they published in english but at the same time, they didn't not finished printing some of the short volumes manga series for example is Versailles Of The Dead and that series has ended already for 5 volumes in Japan but unfortunely they had stopped published that one after volume 2 eventhough the 3rd one supposed to out on December 2019 but it never happends! :'( And don't worry,Vertical was still existed! :) Dark Horse was also an good company as well eventhough it is always had an issues for some people who buy every single titles of them! I also agreed with your opinions about Denpa,Tokyopop and Viz Media! For Square Enix,i'm only knowing them from video games because i'm a fan of JRPG lol and some of the series that they had published in english so far was so good for example My Dress Up Darling and everything else of course! :)

4:50 blood blockade battlefront was published between 2016 - 2018 and that series is completely out of print. 10 volumes and they let it go out of print

I know this video is old, but I’m glad you addressed Yen Press’s quality control. Releases like the Pandora Hearts box set and the SAO Platinum Collector’s Edition are top notch, but out of 3 omnibus/collected editions I have bought from them, all 3 have ended up with a warped spine or some other noticeable cosmetic issue after only 1 read. The two examples I think highlight this best are the releases they did of Another and Azumanga Daioh. Even some of my single volumes I own also have this issue after being purchased brand new. Also, absolutely agree on Seven Seas and Vertical. I wish they would release more titles just so I could support them more.

This was strangely fascinating. I own manga from the big 3 at the end of the list on my shelf. Possibly SE too not sure if Black Butler is fully Yen Press or if SE publishes it now. I've had some Tokyopop and Dark Horse stuff pass in my collection but ended up selling them because they weren't my favorite. Wish I was a bigger Made in Abyss fan because I'm curious about Seven Seas. I'd say VIZ is my number 1. 20th Century Boys, Monster, and Maison Ikkoku are my favorite things I own. But I really love the translations for Yotsuba and Black Butler from Yen Press.
