I finally got the whole stream viewed in full. There were so many good points made. I was a Christian for 60 years. I'm 68 right now, so, only an atheist for eight years. I'm still sorting through my journey. I was relieved to hear my reason for leaving discussed. Jesus' multiple promises to answer prayer were either lies, or he wasn't God in the flesh.I spent a year in agonized prayer, weeping, Bible in my hands, seeking his face. My last straw was a ruptured relationship with my only brother. I knew reconciliation was God's will. The levels of repentance for my fault in the fight & the time in prayer cannot be quantified. That final failed answer is why I became an atheist. The irony is that my new philosophy of secular humanism is what eventually healed our relationship.

Rather than say the cognitive dissonance in Christianity is unbelievable, I'd say the cognitive consonance/harmony is unbelievable as the dissonance only kicks in once the thoughts start fighting against one another.

great collab. I thought you guys hit on a lot of important points. and to the point you guys were making about others say their God made them feel good about themselves are healed them or how children are convinced of God.
I view belief in God and experiences with God with this analogy.
maybe a young daughter is scared to sleep in her own room for the first time.
so we tell her not to worry because little Susie (doll) will be in there with her and Susie will protect her.
and since the parent tells her that the child believes it and little girl's emotions go from petrified and scared to death to being calmed and becomes at peace emotionally or spiritually if you want to say that.
That's no different than what people project onto this God/s we think we're protected by him/them and we think we're going to heaven so we feel at peace )
Facts are completely irrelevant, the only thing that matters is what we believe.
When things get dicey say a year down the road a burglar breaks in and harms the daughter and or the parents
That daughter is going to have trust issues with Susie and wonder why Susie didn't protect her or wonder if her parents lying about Susie's powers or did she do something wrong and that's why Susie didn't protect her???
What do the parents do to get little Susie to sleep on her own again in the future?
Do they buy her a new doll (god)
Or do they tell her the only reason it happened is because you didn't believe in little Susie enough "but if you start believing and Susie More none of that will ever happen again."
(do you see how horribly that will affect that child, thinking it's because of her lack of belief as to why the bad things happened to her or her family)
That's what religion does to people and it's how the ancient people viewed their gods and situations

Great episode except I wouldn’t say fundamentalists are being honest with the text entirely. Since they make excuses of why the Bible doesn’t support slavery which is a form of progressive Christianity.

1:16:46 and what about all the other translations of the Bible in other languages!?!? I think this is something that isn’t discussed enough - NO TWO TRANSLATIONS (German, Japanese, Egyptian, Swahili, ad infinitum) SAY IT OR UNDERSTAND IT THE SAME WAY!

But David and Brandon, regarding Noah's Ark, haven't you heard of plate tectonics? In Noah's day, all the land masses were one continent so that all the land animals and birds easily made their way to the Ark. After the flood (and there is scientific proof of this), the continent split apart and formed the seven continents and numerous islands that we have today! Its just one more instance of science proving the accuracy of the Bible! 😃😃😃😃😃

    • @turnerturner3281

I can't tell if you're joking. The super continent of Pangaea existed 200-300 Million years ago. The earliest documented representative of the genus Homo (humans) evolved around 2.8 million years ago. The book of genesis was probably composed around the 5th-3rd century BCE. When the landmasses were connected, there was nothing resembling the human species anywhere on earth.

I was the reverse!- came from more progressive Christianity into radical fundamentalism for a time there… I think I was searching for very black and white answers, thinking: “If my God is real and good and cares about us having truth, then these things must be black and white! I’ll find them and adhere to them, no matter the cost!” Well, everything shattered and now faith is gone, and I’ve never been more free ✨❤️‍🩹
    Thanks, guys! Great stuff! 👏🏻
