This was way before the Mets were born. 6 months before. This Yankee team set a record for most home runs in baseball history (6 players hit 20 or more!) which stood for many years.

For you baseball history buffs in the 1961 season Roger Maris hit 61 home runs and that he did not have a intentional walk through out the whole season. What a great player.

The reason Maris got no IBBs was because Mickey Mantle batted behind Maris. Who would you rather pitch to in a tight game?

      Hector Lopez.

Great MVP, AND the RECORD that year in '61 an expansion year...pedestrian most of the rest of his career offensively, but superb, elite, defensively most of his career.
He had a pretty good '60, was MVP in an offyear for hitters in the A.L...and his glove and arm led to some of that MVP..
After '61 he was not great, or even that good offensively..
      Not a HALL OF FAMER.

DARRELL JOHNSON managed against CINCY for Boston in the '75 WORLD SERIES..He caught for Cincy here, but had played before for the YANKS..
He was the last St.Louis Browns player to actively on the field be involved in the World Series in any capacity= '75 Series..as Mgr.

This was a bit of an odd series. The Reds got a split at Yankee Stadium which was what they wanted. They won the series opener and had a 2-0 lead in game 2 only to see Noo Yawk rally and win 3-2. Then when the series shifted to Cincinnati they fell apart and got pounded three straight games. The Reds' two big guns, Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson, failed to produce in the series.

I think you meant "game 2" for "series opener" -- the '61 Yanks went very '61 Yanks on Cincy in this broadcast (spoiler for 59-year-old game).

@@jasonamil8820, I think he also meant game three instead of game two= 3-2 loss..and you meant game five instead of game one.
Game five was 13-5, game four was seven-zip..all YANKS..
      Game one was only 2-0..
In '61, NYY set the record, albeit in a weaker pitching first modern two-team expansion year with eight more games, when they broke the '47 NYGiants 222, and hit 240 homers..
That was the 1961 YANKS exemplified..13-5 in game five..multiple homers..

Only two sponsors, Gillette and Chrysler. For the time period, it's strange not to hear a cigarette ad during a baseball game.
