Great to hear WS games with the Cubs in them bitter sweet that this is the LAST WS game for one Henry Louis Gehrig.

This was aired about two to three weeks before the infamous "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast as heard on the "Mercury Theater of the Air" featuring Orson Welles. It was considered as the most shocking radio broadcast ever heard.

It’s sad to think how much Gehrig’s condition would deteriorate between the WS and Spring Training.

Yes, on that October day in 1938, no one would have imagined that the great Gehrig was beginning his slow decline. Fans in the stands probably expected him to play until about 1945 - and to go out a champion. He did go out as a champion, but not the kind the fans expected. There are probably a few people still living who were actually at the game.

This must have been recorded on a vinyl record. That would account for the skips. 25 year old Mel Allen wasn't the Yankee's broadcaster yet. he was working for CBS.. The Yankees weren't even broadcasting their games yet. He joined the Yankees booth the next year and wound up the #1 man when Garnett Marks got fired for calling ivory Soap "Ovary Soap" and Arch McDonald opted to return to the Washington Senators. Mel's style here seems nervous and heavily dependent on what's been written down for him to say. he had yet to become the Mel Allen we know, (and, in fact had just changed his name from Mel israel.)

the guy doing the last 3 or so innings was horrid. did he even understand the "first half of the 9th inning" were the last 3 outs before the Yankees won 3 consecutive Championships?! He sounds like the end of the game took him totally by surprise.

He's actually quite famous:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France_Laux But I agree that this wasn't his best performance, especially at the end.
