Hanks couldn't quite figure out the right voice until he heard the real speech pattern of the actor who played young Forrest. Hanks was doing an impersonation of magic legs Forrest.
bonus fun fact: Kurt Russel also plays a part in 3000 Miles to Graceland as a member of a Casino Robber gang that all dress up as Elvis for their heist.
The movie ended beautifully, left you happy & sad for Forrest because of the ending of his journey loving Jenny but the beginning of his love/adventure with his son. It was a movie of a life lived fully. It shines like a beacon of hope for everyone.
Saying "My mama always said life was like a box of chocolates" makes sense because at this point in time, his mother has passed away, so he can only refer to her in the past tense.
What makes the WB decision to not make Forest Gump even funnier is that fact Kurt Russell starred in the executive decision movie while providing the voice of Elvis in Forest Gump. Either way he got paid.
I've eaten at Bubba Gump's Shrimp Co. Specifically the one in Monterey, California. Good experience. We sat at a table overlooking Monterey Bay with the otters swimming around just outside the window. There was a mock-up of the bus bench out front with Forrest's shoes, suitcase and box of chocolates, where you could sit and pose for photos. In the men's room, the large, handicapped stall with grab bars and room for a wheelchair had a sign on the door, "Lieutenant Dan's". Bottom line, the food and service were good and not all shrimp dishes. I'd eat there again.
I only eat seafood locally (I'm in the town this movie was filmed in) so I get all the good local shrimps. I doubt anyone wants a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co here when we have so many local restaurants that get their catch right off the water and the boats. XD
I always thought that Forrest Jr. looked familiar, but didn't realise until watching "The Movies that Made Us" documentary that he was played by Haley Joel Osment, five years before "The Sixth Sense." He was discovered in a pizza commercial, and the casting directors thought that he would be perfect for the role.
And don't forget his iconic role in AI. Artificial intelligence 2001. To me his best performance. If you haven't seen it, look it up. You will watch it again and again and again.@@MoviesAtTheBar
A “Forrest Gump in Space” was sort of made … by MAD Magazine. In the 90’s they did an Apollo 13 parody where instead Hanks and Senise play Gump and Lt. Dan in the premiss of Apollo 13, where hilarity ensues. Also, does anyone remember MAD TV’s “Gump Fiction”?
Forrest Gump somewhat went into space. The next time you watch Apollo 13, you can pretend Tom Hanks was reprising his role as Forrest Gump for the film. And as a bonus, you can pretend Gary Sinise grew back his legs.
Or had his prosthetic legs replaced with more advanced looking prosthetic legs that looks identical to his original legs. Similar to Luke’s prosthetic hand in The Empire Strikes Back.
Also, in Apollo 13, it was mentioned in the epilogue that the person Sinise was acting as later flew the space shuttle. Plus, keep in mind what the reference was to what Dan said his artificial legs were made out of, "Titanium alloy. It's what the use on the space shuttle." Now, this is not a fortuitous prediction of Gary Sinise's appearance in Apollo 13 (though I am sure that a lot of people will say it is), but a reference to when he said earlier in the film, "If you are ever a shrimp boat captain, that's the day I'm an astronaut!"
Fact 11: Michael Connor Humphreys, the boy who played the young Forrest Gump enlisted in the US Army when he was a young adult & deployed to Iraq (Anbar province) with 1st Armored Division. He later served in the famous 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) and got out in 2008. 😃🇺🇸👍🏾
His mama was dead in the chronology of the story when he said it so “was” makes sense for his simple way of thinking. When his mama said it to him she used “is”.
The "box of chocolates" line is just another line that got misquoted even at the time. It was a line used everywhere at the time so it got mangled by everyone including other writers who used it as a punchline. It's like "Beam me up, Scotty" or "Play it again, Sam".
Forrest Gump is one of my favorite movies. I watched it five times in the theater and I know every word of it. I used to come home from high school and put it in the VHS player and just let in play over and over while being a teenager and talking on the phone with friends all night. Such great memories for me. Been to most all the filming locations and will be in Monument Valley this summer to knock another one off the list. Zemeckis and Silvestri are brilliant bringing this movie to life and of course Hanks who is the man!
so what do you think then, is it "was" like a box of chocolates or "is" like a box of chocolates? I honestly don't remember but if he did say "was" with his mom being dead at the time he's sitting on the bench it could be was.
I still remember seeing the poster for the movie at the local mall and never forgot the tagline, "You'll never see life the same once you see it through the eyes of Forrest Gump."
It does make sense for Forrest to say "was". He was talking about a saying his late mother taught him. In the scene when he visited his mom when she is sick she says "is".
When Forrest was saying " Life was like a box of chocolate " he was quoting his mom's PAST saying. Which makes total sense. Lets say your dad asked where your mom is. She told you she is going to the store . But you tell your dad mom said she WAS going to the store. Forrest's mom probably said " Life IS like a box of chocolate " to him. But when telling the story he says was. But it's easy to confuse the both together because you think of both conversations. It's always been was. The Mandela effect is nothing more than a tricky, faulty memory.
I believe Forrests mum DOES infact say 'Life is like' during the movie... while Forrest says 'Life was like'. That being said there are some Mandela Effects that are far more interesting and chin scratching (That Bernstein Bears one is one I know for certain doesnt sit right with me as a kid that was an avid reader and watcher of the books and cartoons), and im not sure when the idea became linked to conspiracy... granted that doesnt mean its a real thing.
I just realized that every time i start this video stating I’ll be hearing 10 facts about the movie, Minty has a funny way of squeezing as many details as possible so you end up learning 100 facts by the end. That’s a great achievement so well done 👍🏼
Minty your videos are so comforting, I don't know why but I just find them soothing. I even like the ones for movies I've never heard of. keep up the awesome work mate 💕
For like a couple of years after Gump came out, it seemed like everyone had it playing. It happened 4-5 times when visiting a friend's house; they or their parents would just randomly have it on. Despite loving the film, it kind of weirded me out lol
Hey Minty, id love to see a '10 things you didnt know about IRON EAGLE' that was one of my favourite movies as a kid. Joined Air Cadets because of it lol..anyways love ya work mate and your home video store looks killa
I live just outside of Washington DC. 2 of my friends in high school were recruited to be extras in the movie, because they looked like hippies. They were in the protest scene where Jenny runs through the water at the National Mall. The best part is they each got paid $500 a day! And I think they shot for 2 or 3 days. Not bad for 2 high school girls in 1994.
Minty you are the best! I just adore your videos! Oh and I remember VERY vividly everyone saying (and of course in the Forest Gump voice) "Life IS like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're gonna get." Also, they should have had Forrest Whitaker play Bubba! That would have been pretty funny 😉
There is another scene - which was scripted and shot - that got cut from the film, and that scene involved little Jenny being responsible for her abusive father's death by releasing the tractor handbrake so it runs him down in the corn field. This element was removed as the filmmakers decided audiences wouldn't forgive Jenny for such a violent act, no matter how evil her father was.
Punchline is a criminally underrated and overlooked movie. So many laughs and some genuine family dynamics between Sally Field, John Goodman, and Candice Cameron.
I had heard that Tom Hanks took the roll because Forrest meets Tom Hanks in the book. I am glad that Gary Sinise took the roll of Lieutenant Dan. It was like the part was written just for him. Have you read the book Grateful American? It was written by Gary Sinise. Gary formed a band called “The Lieutenant Dan Band” they travel all over performing for the armed services.
Btw..it's pretty clear if you look at the scene at 5:06 , in the movie as he gets himself back in the chair, it's clear he used his "invisible" legs to get up, and into, the chair.
Bubba Gump Shrimp had a location at the Baltimore Inner Harbor, but there was a planned takedown of the pavilions before the Key Bridge collapsed. Life IS like a box of chocolates.... Much love from Baltimore!
There's a book called Illusions the journey of a reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach and if you read the book and compare the overall main concept of it to the movie of Forrest Gump there's a lot of connections to it. And ironically on the cover of the book there's a single blueish color feather and at the end of Forrest Gump when the feather takes flight it reminds me of the book. If you haven't read the book I highly recommend it. It's a very short book that's easy to read in a couple hours but it's storyline and message is life changing. And even though it's about a Messiah it's really not religious or pushing any religious beliefs. It's just a good way of looking at life. Anyway thanks Minty. Cheers!
This is my all time favorite movie. As a kid, I’d watch it over and over. We had a jailbroken cable box so when it was on PPV, I’d just sit there and watch it on repeat.
I was quick to notice when I first watched Forrest Gump how it seamlessly appeared as if Hanks did interact with those historical figures. My older brother noted how the only instance when it was betrayed that special effects were used was the scene when Gary Sinece’ character tumbles out of his wheelchair and needs to hoist himself back in; the moment when Sinece gets back into the chair, his posture isn’t one of a guy struggling with his arms.
Great Video Minty, to a film, that will always be in my top 10 😎 Funny thing, in the german Version is no Mandela Effect. It was always the line: "Das Leben, ist wie eine Schachtel Pralinen. Man weiß nie was man kriegt." Not in english version "was", just in the present (german dub) "is". In my childhood we have the same discussion in my family, about the legs from Leutnant Dan 😂 I hope too that Forrest Gump will fly to the Stars
Does it really show us that and do you? My interpretation is in the grand scheme of things it hardly matters what any of us do. Does the man make history or does history make the man? Events occur and there's always someone there. Or it wouldn't be an event.
Thank you Minty. Your videos kept me while I was really sick in the hospital. Now I’m much better and can walk again I’ve always enjoyed your work. I actually went to the movies to see Forrest Gump. (Yeah I’m that old!) And why sir, did you not cover that Jenny tragically died from complications from aids? Yeah, that part.
The sayiing "life WAS like a box of chocolates you never know what you are gone get" make 100% sense because after you know what the chocolate IS you finally know what you are going to get.
This was filmed around my hometown in Beaufort, SC. People come here to see the settings. My brother worked security during the Vietnam scenes. It was so huge a few years after it came out. The hype died down after about 10 years. The bench he sat on in Savannah had to be removed because of vandals; there's just a sign there now. As per usual in our southern towns, you can't have nice things.
“Life is like a box of chocolates” shouldn’t really count as Mandela effect. If anything, it just shows how flawed the English language is. Mrs. Gump said, laying in her death bed: “Life is a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Forrest paraphrased her metaphor, making it a simile by adding “like”. The word “was” simply replaced “is” because he was using past tense. When we paraphrase the quote, we combine Mrs. Gump’s present tense usage with Forrest’s simile. The phrase becomes, “Life is like a box of chocolates.” That’s a bit more complex than the whole “Luke, I am your father” thing.
Great job, Minty! This was a rare instance where the movie was much better than the book it is based on. I hate the book version of Forrest even more than I hate the book version of Katniss Everdeen.
Hanks couldn't quite figure out the right voice until he heard the real speech pattern of the actor who played young Forrest. Hanks was doing an impersonation of magic legs Forrest.
Through the movie Forrest says “was” but when he visits his mom on her death bed, it’s here where she says “is”.
right. I basically was going to say the same and also in the trailer is where we’re getting it from also I believe
"was like ..." is correct as Forrest uses indirect speech thus has to use simple past tense.
She does say is, but she says "Life is a box of chocolates" and not "Life is like a box of chocolates"
He says both...watch the making of featurette.
So many different tenses eh!?
Life is like a Minty's "10 Things You Didn't Know About..." video. You never know what you're gonna get.
You never know how many mistakes there will be?
Ahem... Life WAS like a Minty's "10 Things You Didn't Know About..."
Whenever I watch something from the 80s-90s I usually check to see if Minty has riffed on it
Great comment.

Great video
He says his mom said life was like a box of chocolates, in a later scene his mom says life is. So he's speaking in past tense.
Elvis !!!!!!!........plus,Kurt Russell also starred in 3000 Miles to Graceland, an Elvis themed movie too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my all time favorite films
I remember watching this at Knox Cinemas as part of a movie marathon. Fun times!
