In review it is striking how clear and simple C. Pells communications were. No elaborate theological posturing or indignant blustering. And yet he also spoke with incredible empathy for even those that sought to attach the Church, the Pope and himself.
What a towering Catholic influence, whose contributions will be valued more as time goes on, and who will be missed

This makes me truly appreciate the uphill battle that Pell and St. John Paul were having to fight. It is easy to criticize St. JPII and people like Cardinal Pell for "not going hard enough" on people who were trying to weaponize Vatican II against its own purposes but as the debate shows, a large majority of Catholics at the time were already on the threshold of leaving. People like St. John Paul, Cardinal Pell, and Pope Benedict truly defended orthodoxy and sacred tradition without losing sight of their pastoral mission.

This means if there is supposedly say 500 million Catholics in the world, then really there are only 150 million because you can’t be catholic if you don’t believe that. Food for thought. Although this was several years ago, it does still withstand today, and really until the last day. Satan is a “tempter” as he has from the beginning. The men and women who think Catholic doctrine has to be with the modern times are being tempted by the same who tempted Eve and think, “yes, we should be allowed to eat from the forbidden tree”. And precisely this is why Pope Paul VI and Pope St. John Paul wrote those documents. To let us know that the Church and its members are being tempted. And of course, we do have freewill, but to unite our will to God’s is to protect ourselves and ultimately our conscience from temptation. God bless!

It is depressing to see Catholics so brazenly and publicly disown the teaching authority of the Church (which is really a loss of faith, in the last analysis). This is different from merely having a difficultly understanding or living a doctrine but the faith is really that the Church has this authority from Christ, so we believe even if we find certain areas difficult to understand ('a thousand difficulties don't equal a doubt', as Newman said). This is also quite distinct from the present situation, in which there are learned and faithful theologians who are genuinely concerned that the present occupant of the Chair is teaching things in disharmony with the constant teaching (not getting into that here, but there are some who would place these people and Dr Feser, for example, in the same place, when anyone can see the difference). Contraception is a prime example of why Christ gave us a living magisterium, able to address new realities and situation and apply to them with certitude the teaching of Christ. Barrier contraception was clearly condemned from the story of Onan, so there was never really a question about it. With the invention of hormonal contraception, however, theologians wondered if this came under the same condemnation. It was a reasonable question and needed the authoritative voice of the Church. Well, Rome spoke, the case is finished!

A response to the misguided religious sister at 14:35 who said the language of Humanae Vitae is "not inclusive" and that women are supposedly not named or included:
The word "woman" (Latin "mulier") is used 3 times (Paras. 2, 12 - 13), and "women" (Latin "mulieres") is used twice in the Latin original (Paras. 14 & 17). Also, the word "homines" is used many times in the encyclical and can be used of just men, but also, of both men and women combined. Sister Anne Hall simply doesn't know what she's talking about.

Really seems like it wasn't until the early 00's that things started to turn around. Still an uphill battle and the side with history and fact on their side is still grossly outnumbered by the 'but I want to do it my way' crowd, but Truth reasserts itself, one way or another.

Fast forward to 2023: Are the women in this audience also satisfied with the effects contraception has had on women who took, eg., the birth control pill? Infertilities, cancers, etc..
In 1993 I was as ignorant of the teachings of the Church as many in this audience were. In 2023 I agree with everything Cardinal Pell said.
This was not a debate, it was a 'get Cardinal Pell' opportunity. Especially that Jesuit 'friend' in the front row who insisted on calling Cardinal Pell, George.
This proves where the Jesuits were coming from and where they ended up today.

Bishop George Pell is very gentile, articulate and persuasive although I personally don’t believe a word that he says. I am confused whether he was convicted of sexual assault or not. If this involved a single complaint then I am not yet convinced that he is a sexual pervert. If this involved multiple complaints from multiple people, then that really increases the chance that he did the wrong thing. We must not convict him unfairly. Anyway, I think that preventing contraception harms women because women are not in the driver’s seat of life. Also no contraception really penalizes poorer families. Contraception does NOT increase infidelity or early sex despite what the clergy say. When contraception is allowed, teenage pregnancy rates and pregnancy terminations really occur much less. There are dramatically less abortions. The Church needs women to be intimately involved in the priesthood and even up to becoming Cardinals. Christianity is fading in the western word. Only immigration keeps the Catholic Church from disappearing right now. The children and grandchildren of the Catholic and Muslim immigrants will ignore the Catholic Church and ignore the Muslim religion. Religion will be a small part of our society in the near future. Religion should not be forced on children in early school.
