He may really love her, which is more than most of the grooms who back out of weddings in these things. How long she stays with him is another matter.
Why on Earth will the protagonist talk about contributing for the wedding to her future DIL, whom she doesn't even know her, doesn't make any sense. She should be only communicating with her son about all the financial aspects.
While I agree that it’s not at all the business of the future DIL to exactly know the financial details of any gift or contribution that the future MIL (or FIL) chooses to provide, such conversations are actually more common than you would imagine. Not to diminish or de-value your opinion here…I’m just saying it does happen.

Does the groom have NOTHING ago say about how his bride is treating his mother? What a piece of trash he is for not standing up and defending his mother!
And again as is too often done in these stories, WHERE is the son, the groom? I was expecting- also common in the stories- for James to find out what a piece of trash bridezilla is and call it off
