      I have never seen a catan game portraed like this, and it really gives you a sense of the meta game that goes on in these matches. Amazing video, really well done.

    I think the fact that they regarded him as such a good player was what led them to lose. It allowed him to so easily manipulate Caleb and Katie when he was pretending to work with them, because they just listened to his every request... whether consciously or not, the idea that he's this incredibly talented player probably led them to think that whatever he said was the right play and not think about it any further because they'd placed him above them skill-wise before the game even started. Talking before the game and deciding to team up against him is basically saying "we know this guy is so much better than us" and therefore gives him a crazy amount of power over the two of them. Seems like the only other player who had a chance was Mari, who seemed a lot more level headed about playing against him than the other two.

      You are spot on. There is some psychological effect that once you perceive someone as very skilled in something, you naturally submit to their leadership in the matter. Even if you are on the same level.

    I grew up playing Catan and for a long time thought it was super boring and simply rolling dice. But recently I started leaning more into the trading and social aspect of the game, and now it's one of my favorites. Great video!

    The entire match is available on TH-cam (Catan US National Championship 2021). I recommend watching it since there is so much to learn, also regarding which spots to pick and which not.
    Edit: Thanks! I watched some of the finals from different years and didn't know which one it was, but added above

    This is what makes this game far best then any other I think. This might be the best first game for kids since they learn the skill of trading early one in life, witch is essential skill for your life.

    Wow this looked like he had control over the entire table. Was he that much better than all the other pros, or are his tactics considered unethical by most of the Catan community and therefore avoided by tournament players?

    • @KenPlaysCatan
      @KenPlaysCatan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Everything he did is perfectly normal for Catan, it's just that most people don't do it that well. The only unethical thing was the one the REF called out.

    There's another way to win in Catan, though: Get better luck than your opponents. In fact, given that everyone in the game is truly an elite "salesman" as you put it, this is mostly what the game comes down to. Three of the four players in this finals game were amateurish and not very good. Why do you think that is? It's because they got lucky to win their previous games, which is what it takes sometimes.

  • @helxis
    @helxis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This sort of thing will stop happening the moment that final tables for this game aren't seated with predominantly pushover casuals. You shouldn't be able to manipulate people into winning a strategy board game; and you shouldn't feel good about it, if you do. The skill floor for Catan is low (hence its popularity and abundance of unskilled players), but its skill ceiling is low as well. Will be interested in seeing where the competitive scene goes if it ever attracts enough equally skilled players. Will people still enjoy watching 3-4 people take optimal opening moves followed by seeing how the dice roll?

    • @KenPlaysCatan
      @KenPlaysCatan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some backstory. All of these players have been playing all weekend and are pretty exhausted. One of them (Caleb I think) was either sick or has some sleep issue the day before. Mari has made it to final tables a few times so she isn't a pushover. I think this match was also an mental endurance test after a long weekend of games. But yes, I agree with your overall sentiment.

    • @helxis
      @helxis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KenPlaysCatan I really found the video to be a good demonstration of greed in psychology. Those players sat down with a plan to prevent one player from winning; but they immediately couldn't execute on it because they all valued their own individual chances to win too much. Once one player opened trading with the eventual winning player, the rest immediately felt like they needed to in order to stay in the game. It was clear they did not bring level heads to the table. On top of that, it is possible and likely that they were outclassed, negotiation skills aside.

    Its great and all to be "so good". But he seems like he would be so aggravating to play with. At the end of the day, its a game and it should be fun for everyone playing. Seems like he is just pissing people off with the way he has input on what everyone else is doing.
