I have been a Steelers fan for 52 years and I don't live in PA, never have. Over the last 14 years, I have become numb to this brand of football. There is nothing else to say.
It’s one thing that the Steelers have never had a losing season under MT. But it’s another thing that the Steelers no longer instill fear in their opponents, and it seems like eons since they have. We need a new motivator, someone who’s not afraid of change and has the moxie to turn a team around into a contender. Look at what Dan Campbell has done for Detroit.
Hey Matt, I know you said you’re not going to really dig into the possibilities of replacements, but if I could make a suggestion, go look deeper into Detroit’s staff. Aaron Glenn is going to be a great head coach. The way they blitz corners and change coverages looks really familiar to my childhood, guess who their secondary coach is? And their WR coach might be able to help shake up our offense. Hire Glenn and have him bring the Steelers on staff with him, and we can start anew.
I’m no longer planning my weeks around Steelers Football! There is no need to! Hey if some girl wants to go out for ice cream on Sunday at 1pm! That’s what I’m doing! “ Hope is a dangerous thing, it’s got no use on the inside, hope will drive a man insane”! ( Red, Shawshank Redemption 1994 et. al.)
The best thing that you could do. Haven't cared too much about it in the last few years and it made me a lot more happier. Only a fool would rather watch football instead of ice-cream with your girl.
How could Friermuth drop the first pass of the game, hit him perfectly on the hands!!!!! Looked like he was playing " i dont care " football to me!!!!!
We've seen it before, and we'll see it again until the Steelers land a franchise QB (Russell Wilson clearly is not the future). In addition, the window has closed for the Cam/JT/Minkah "elite" Deefense.
I like Tomlin, I think he’s a good coach but it just feels like there’s no more passion in the game. There’s always some kind of drama in the locker room and our play on the field just feels lackluster. I remember when Andy Reid left the Eagles. Maybe it’s time for Tomlin to move on and rejuvenate his career. There’s a few good OC coordinators out there right now. Like the lions OC for one. Time to modernize this team and stop living in the 70s/90s/00s Time for a change.
Hi Matt! SInce you are a stats guy this might be of interest. How much of the season (% of total minutes) did the Steelers play while behind in the score? I believe this could explain the late season burnout.
Matt - thank you for saying what is readily apparent. The Steelers are not an upper echelon team. They are outclassed by every other playoff team. Worse...while teams like Denver are ascending...the Steelers are in reverse. Its time to accept we need a significant rebuild...and many of the existing players, coaches, and maybe GM staff need to move on. Thoughts?
Im surprised we fell apart as bad as we did. I really think getting out coached as bad as we did, led to the players not giving their best effort. We aren't firing Tomlin, so our options are new coordinators and position coaches.
You talk about the lack of adjustments in the 1st half when that was Tomlins Achilles heel the past 10-15 years. It’s like they built a game plan for every game, and stuck with it no matter what. And if they were losing at half time and it was a close game THEN that’s when they made adjustments. It was pretty evident against the bengals last week. They stuck to the run, and Tomlin admitted to it because they didn’t want Burrow getting the ball (which I find pretty odd sounds like he fears what Burrow could do but Tomlin always reminds us how they don’t live in their fears…hmmm). This game, they tried to open it up more, but the VERY FIRST PLAY, A drop by Freiermuth. This time needs an overhaul, from head coach, to coordinators, to players. If it means a losing season, then so be it, but I’m honestly tired of just being mediocre. It’s being tiring and boring for 10 years now
Secondary coaching grade, C / Linebackers coaching grade C /. Offensive linemen coach grade D/ wide receivers coaching, F. (On the season). Offense season ranking, Rushing: #11. Not even in the top 10/ PASSING: #27 TEAM AS A WHOLE GRADE: = (F)
This movie is beyond sickening!!!!! We are gonna run the ball and play defense? WHEN???? we can't fix anything!!! We need major CHANGES!!! Can't watch this anymore.. My God how far this team has fallen!! This doesn't even look like a Pittsburgh team... Bill Cowher lost some AFC title games but his playoff teams never looked like this!!!!
Only 8 teams have a longer playoff win drought than the Steelers, will be 7 if Washington wins tomorrow. That’s hideous, Tomlins footprint on all of it.
While that is an indictment on Tomlin, the Browns and Jags have won more recently than thr Steelers but have done nothing since. Would you rather one year with a playoff win and the irrelevance for years after.... or would you prefer getting in year after year and not breaking through? It's an interesting discussion.
@deaj8450 I get that. I'm incredibly frustrated. But, my question is, is it better to have a couple of bad seasons (3-14/4-13) to maybe go deeper in the playoffs, or is it better to continue along the same track and hope we get a QB?? Teams can turn it around quickly with good coaching and a good culture.
@@jamescalder90 I don't think we can turn it around at all, I have no faith in this coach. I would definitely take losing seasons if it meant we could have some playoff success. I don't think we have good coaching, and our culture is stuck 30 years in the past. There is nothing to turn around. 9 or 10 wins and get beat in the playoffs, this has been the story for 8 years in a row. What is there to turn around? We couldn't even win with Ben Bell and AB. Granted, lots of injuries in those teams.
@deaj8450 I get the line of reasoning. However, let's follow it. Let's say the Steelers have a losing record next season (3-14/4-13), and Tomlin steps away. The new coach comes in, has another losing season, so it is back to back losing seasons. What happens next? Are the fans going to just be happy if we can have a winning season? Let's say they do, make the playoffs, but still get wiped in the first round. Are the fans going to ask for more change? I understand the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting a different result. However, this can't really apply in a sport where you don't have a top 10 talent at the most important position. If you look at all the teams in the playoffs, they all have good to great QBs. Picking at the top of the draft doesn't guarantee that either.
There are quite a few of us who were sick of Tomlin 10 years ago. But each year we get fired up for football season and get behind him and hope that he can be great. We’ve seen him be aggressive where Cowher was conservative. But Tomlin had coaches around him and it’s clear now that Arians and LeBeau were why they got to those two Super Bowls. And each year now we see the exact same results. And they aren’t getting high draft picks and I’m not even sure they make good decisions in the draft anyway. It’s well past the time to clean house. We thought Tomlin would leave right around the time Ben retired and he just won’t go away!
Where do we start, Lamar was littering walking through the defensive line. The lack of effort and intensity in the first half was absolutely pathetic. The second half was better but it was too late. Horrible pass coverage defense was weak and to finnish...4TH and inches you need to go for it though in your end you need to roll the dice, yet you go for 4 th and 15 wtf. Tomlin needs to be replaced. In most NFL organizations Tomlin would of been fired in previous years.
Don’t understand on paper this team should be almost lights out . Problem is players are not used right . They would do better if they would play simple backyard football like just throw the ball 10 yards in the middle or run flat out and come back route smh I could coach better
Matt, since the Steelers' last playoff win they have been outscored 38-126 in the first half. Zero points in the first quarter in all five games. How does that even happen?
We do not have the same tier playmakers as other teams yet our fans and media believe we should be either winning or close in every game we play against teams with clearly better players at those key positions. When you start at the top, QB, all of the teams we have lost to recently have QBs that are far beyond what we have, and I like Russ and Fields. You can't ignore that. Ben in his prime would get us out of stadiums sometimes when everything else wasn't going great. We should have had a game plan to replace him much sooner than we did, kind of like what Reid did with Mahomes, but we waited too long. A high caliber QB makes all the differnece. We have an aging Wilson and an unproven Fields. Not a peak Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, Burrow, etc. It's just not the same game when you are trying to win a championship. Hurts is even closer to their level than what we have. And the fact that those QBs also have talent on offense to support them is just the bonus. Seeing Lamar drop back 10 to 15 yrds to take advantage of space is a simple strategic advantage that no matter how you deploy your defense, it will be hard to defend him. Then give him arguably the best RB the last few years to support and already really good running game. I just think fans and media look beyond big picture. Talent wins over not equally talented. Heart and some lucky breaks can keep it close and sometimes get you wins. But we have not drafted high in a very very long time and it has shown in our being middle road often. We don't break the bank on high end free agents and it shows on lack of talent overall. We win, but it is at the cost of not taking risks. We took more risks this year adding the players we did and you will see that model continue with Khan. But the 'immediate' expectations of success by our fanbase and media is unfair. You place emotions over reality. It takes time to get better. It takes continuity to yield consistent results. It takes getting premium talent to be competitive in the league. Some of these teams that now have great offenses or playoff teams were picking top 5 every year for 10 years in a row. It's about time they have some success. We have to been bad enough to benefit from those opportunities. But fans will continue to live in their emotions as if the Steelers owe them something. Yes they play for our entertainment, but at the end of the day, they play for their livelihoods first. They are not playing to be mediocre or to lose each year in the playoffs, don't nieve. The NFL is not easy but it is easy to armchair what you think is right or wrong when you never coached or played, ever. If Tomlin left and won at an organization that has a young franchise QB, I guarantee the same fans and media would say it was because of that QB. Typical...

35,38,42,45,48 points put on him in the recent playoffs lol Tomlin is washed up wasted years on great player's. .
On behalf of the Ravens Nation #KeepTomlin :D
I have been a Steelers fan for 52 years and I don't live in PA, never have. Over the last 14 years, I have become numb to this brand of football. There is nothing else to say.
Was mad that the NFL would put a playoff game on a streaming channel, but I think they did me a favor!
…I don’t remember ever being happy that the season is over.
The NFL needs to put the Cowboys and Steelers in a playoff one game Superbowl each year. Glory DAYS of the 70's!
He dropped other these past few weeks too, dude probably is susceptible to the yips.
We've seen it before, and we'll see it again until the Steelers land a franchise QB (Russell Wilson clearly is not the future). In addition, the window has closed for the Cam/JT/Minkah "elite" Deefense.
Need a new coach Tomlins Era is done. Enough said.
The eagles fired Andy reid. The patriots forced bellicheck out. Good coaches are allowed to be fired. Sometimes change is needed.
Guys, I'm starting to think that maybe the Steelers aren't any good.
I'm jus glad I dnt have to hurt no more
You talk about the lack of adjustments in the 1st half when that was Tomlins Achilles heel the past 10-15 years. It’s being tiring and boring for 10 years now
Continue to live in fears
Best breakdown on the web, sad to recount, but excellent job nonetheless
Mike, it’s not you. It’s me. I need to start seeing other coaches.
It’s the same ol same ol situation
same old ball and chain
Matt, any thoughts on Minkah?
Secondary coaching grade, C / Linebackers coaching grade C /. Offensive linemen coach grade D/ wide receivers coaching, F. (On the season). Offense season ranking, Rushing: #11. Not even in the top 10/ PASSING: #27 TEAM AS A WHOLE GRADE: = (F)
Ravens are a decent team, but their secondary will get picked apart by any of the remaining QBs in the league. Not Super Bowl material.
Will see
That was an ass kicking!!!
@@jamescalder90 I don't know. This feels like purgatory. We watch the same season every year and know the ending.
Tomlin is like a unfunny joke that you repeatedly have to hear daily.
We thought Tomlin would leave right around the time Ben retired and he just won’t go away!
mike tomlin: 14 out of 18 seasons without a playoff win. incompetent clown
Probably the most embarrassing season in a while. Hot start but crash and burn with the normal in and out in the playoffs. Tomlin’s time has come.
Fire Tomlin. I'm DONE with this.
A lot of the Steelers fans wish it would happen but it's up to the owner.
Queen was kinda a bust
I'm boycotting steelers until tomlin gone
NOBODY WILL MISS YOU, WHO CARES
Typical...
Reality is it was shown last week losing to Bengals in the same way we did Ravens just closer score
It doesn't really matter who they draft Matt ,it's not going to fix the team . I dont say that to sound mean is what it is.
You can’t have the highest paid defense in the league with a $10 d coordinator. It was obvious that Austin was a major problem since like week 8.
