  • As a special election gift to The World At One's Martha Kearney, Sir Richard Stilgoe presents a 2015 mix of his classic song 'Packed Lunch'. It features on BBC Radio 4 as the theme tune to a feature in which Martha is joined by a panel of noteworthy commentators, over a packed lunch, to reflect on the progress of the election and chew over the issues that matter to them. How can this video only have 50 likes in 8 years?! Why don’t more people love Richard Stilgoe? He’s such a genius. Talk about vastly under appreciated talent…

Look out his cricketing one (you have to know that Dennis Lillee and Mr. Thompson were well-known cricketers when he wrote it), and his minute waltz (sadly I can't find it on TH-cam as of 2022-5-5 - but I have the single!). Oh, and his expanation of how the cello got its name (to do with a misunderstanding over metrication at the Stradivarius factory in Cremona).

Grew up listening to Stilgoe on Nationwide in the 1970s. Brilliant talent.

Lovely song in keeping with the tradition of English musical lampooning. Who remembers Flanders and Swan?

I do! If you liked them and don't mind an American accent, enjoy Tom Lehrer; and both Tom and F&S shuld bring you back to Fascinating Aïda, especially their ones writtenby Dillie Keane. And don't forget Victoria Wood, of course.
