I simply cannot even think of any other movie that even come close to Deakins cinematography this year. The best competition is Dunkirk which had fantastic visuals. BUt holy damn, Blade Runner 2049 is like one of the best shot movies of all time. And maybe Deakins finest work, that is saying something.
FabledSomething I think Phantom Thread will also be nominated. PTA's film always capture beautiful cinematography ( of course, Roger should win this time ^^)
Well i haven't seen that much of phantom thread except the clips in the trailer. And its Paul T Anderson himself that has done the cinematography in that film, if he has what it takes to be up there among the top in the business, is yet to be discovered. Anderson usually uses top cinematographers in his film, this is the first time he does it himself. So tbh. No he does not even stand a chance against Deakins, that would be unheard of tbh. I'm not even sure he will be nominated, even that would be a big surprise.
Yeah i simply cannot see how anyone can beat him tbh. If we go back to 2007, when Deakins did No Country for Old men, i thought the cinematography was absolutely outstanding as always. But then i saw There will be blood, and i just knew it would win. That year Deakins was not the best, that is for sure, but he was close. But with Blade Runner... What can i say?. The images are spectacular. The different contrasts and colors, the flow of water with those lights, and all the other different light settings, the constant change in dark and light environments. Just wow! As Deakins said himself, it is the most challenging job he has ever done. Because of all the different settings that don't look like one another at all. And Villeneuve also stated in an interview that he thinks this is maybe the best looking film Deakins has ever shot. It just looks spectacular you know, it's rare that you get such beauty as this, very rare. I simply cannot see how Dunkirk can beat it, which is maybe the only film that truly competes. Deakins is just in a league of his own this year, he knocked it out of the park. And this time he not only deserves to win, he needs to win, 13 nominations this guy has, it's about time :D
"Denis, what role did the original Blade Runner play in your life?" "No seriously... it's a movie that I discovered at a very precise moment when I started to dream... of electric sheep."
Kyle Campbell I loved Logan & War for Apes too...but the Academy is never going to nominate a comic book film, or a summer blockbuster. Blade Runner has a shot cause its an October released scifi drama.
In my opinion, this deserves- Cinematography, Director, Supporting Actor (Harrison), Production Design, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Original Score, Visual Effects and maybe even Best Picture
Joshua Westover Sound Mixing and Director, I think "Dunkirk" deserves more. But if this loses Cinematography, that's gonna be worse than when "The Tree of Life" lost.
The last film I left the theatre totally stunned, and overwhelmed was The Dark Knight. This film tho? It left me tearing up at its beauty by the end of it. This movie is a magnum opus.
This film reminded me just how powerful cinema can be. This was an absolute experience to witness and be a part of. Truly wish for the best when it comes to 'Blade Runner 2049'. That passion in it is unparalleled.
Dear Academy, please give this a Best Picture nomination. Normally I'd say it could never happen but you gave one for Mad Max: Fury Road and Arrival, to which Blade Runner 2049 is equally great (albeit in very different ways). All powerful genre movies that are mind blowing pieces of cinema and deserve all the praise in the world.
For me, Blade Runner 2049 is the first film this year that deserves Oscar nominations for all categories across the board. I hope it gets the love it deserves. It's not a guarantee because Sci-Fi doesn't often get a lot of recognition, Arrival lost out last year so let's hope Blade Runner can do it this year.
This was the best film I've seen in decades. I can't even remember the last time I sat in a theater and thought to myself, "This is a masterpiece". Pure brilliance and one of the few films that will last for generations.
Might I just say how refreshing it is to find a comment section that isn't flooded with contrarian bitterness? It's validating to see so many people who love this movie just as much as I do.
Usually I don't support such bold statements lightheartedly. But out of the movies of this year, I can't think of another that is as worthy of that award. At least best original screenplay, best director and best cinematography are strong entries to the race. Of course the technical categories. Considering how bad it did at the box-office, I wish the producers the best picture award. They need some recognition for their decision to make this movie.
It may not have been a huge commercial success, but in every other way-memorableness, belovedness, recognizability....in a word, Legend Status-it was a triumph.
Suicide Squad won best Makeup...which I guess came from Killer Croc, but Blade Runner 2049 could easily take Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best SFX, and Best Makeup.
I love the original Blade Runner and I love Blade Runner 2049 as well. Ryan Gosling performed exceptionally and I sincerely hope that he will star in the next Blade Runner...Just please don't take another 35 years to make the next one Damn it!
This is the greatest movie ever made! I never had a connection with the 1st bladerunner emotionally but there were moments that were genius. I realized how much it actually influenced everything I already liked lol. Bladerunner 2049 I have an obsession with I can't go a day without watching a scene from it. Ryan Gosling is a master storyteller. Harrison Ford brought it. The scene with Rachel, uncanny technology. Luv is one of the best villains on screen in a long time. Jois death had meaning. Deacons visuals.
Now finally something good to accompany shit like the mountain between us and the last living boy in New York. Please get more panelists for actually GOOD movies like this one
*If ROGER EFFING DEAKINS don't win that muthaphukin trophy this time around...* That would be it, Academy - just close shop, 'cause your opinion would be official WORTHLESS.
Amazing experience,im no movie expert i just enjoy movies but watching new Blade Runner was like watching an oil painting in motion for almost 3 hours and it was just amazing.
i just rewatched blade runner 2049 yesterday and idk what's up with me 3/4 years ago when i first watched it that i didn't appreciate it as much as i do right now. but it's a really good sci-fi movie with aesthetically pleasing visual. should've rewatched it sooner
I have absolutely the same feeling. But I have an excuse, I watched 2049 for the first time on my phone :) But now as I finally rewatched it i was completely mesmerized! At first I thought that OG Bladerunner was better by miles, but now I don't think that gap is that big and who knows what I will think when watch this again.... Both films are exceptional. What a work from directors and their crews.
Blade Runner inspired Akira(1988) and Ghost in The Shell(1995) it includes Strange Days Gattaca Dark City The Matrix Videodrome even inspired Akira(1988) and Ghost in The Shell(1995)
....."The art, would be the commerce!".Broderick Alcon. best quote ever!.And, how poignant that statement is. Bladerunner 2049 is on par with the original, maybe even more immersive with the lengthened running time. Thank you, Mr Villeneuve. Also, Sicario and Arrival, are amazing too.
@@kuroryuzaki28 Denis' movies are always reminiscent and heavily influenced by Kubrick's subtlety, he's one of the few filmmakers who still have that kind of subtlety in today's cinema

It most likely won't win. But it BETTER be nominated. At this point my guess is on Dunkirk or The Papers. Blade Runner is still the best overall movie to come out this year.

Sure win: + Cinematography, Visual effect, Sound mixing, sound editing, production design. Nominating: + Best picture, Best Director, Film editing, Make up and hairstyling, Costume design. I dont know but it is like Mad Max Fury road 😂😂😂
Great movie, but I'm looking forward to the Reduced Cut. Way too many scenes were extended for no reason. 2 1/3 hours would have been plenty. "K" is right about the desk scene.
This movie is jaw-dropping.
Chris E FLores very
Chris E FLores BR 2049 is the GREATEST film I've ever seen, bar none. ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE.
@Last Ronin No, it's just his/her opinion and you're just another movie snob. That's all
Hope it wins a shit tonne of Oscars. Outstanding film.
There are a lot of movies this year that also deserves a ton of Oscars
There is Logan, War for the Planet of the Apes, IT, Dunkirk
Very great year for Genre-movies. Let's hope the Academy recognizes it!
IT LOL
Rayza NC maybe Make Up & Hairstyling

Never a Sci-Fi-movie has won best picture. Dear Academy, it is time. This movie is a masterpiece and the best in this decade so far imo.
that's absolutely delusional
Logan and Apes hace nothing on Blade Runner as a whole.
its visually a beautiful movie as well.
Kyle, Logan & WFTPOFA is nothing compared to Blade Runner 2049.
Kyle Campbell I loved Logan & War for Apes too...but the Academy is never going to nominate a comic book film, or a summer blockbuster. Blade Runner has a shot cause its an October released scifi drama.

Joshua Westover Ryan Gosling as well imo.
Joshua Westover Cinematography and Production Design is a safe win I think. But the rest of the list is also realistic.
Joshua Westover Supporting actress for Ana De Armas and Best Actor for Ryan Gosling
Kai Graw to me cinematography production dissige direcott screenplay actor score and best picture are very safe win
Joshua Westover Sound Mixing and Director, I think "Dunkirk" deserves more. But if this loses Cinematography, that's gonna be worse than when "The Tree of Life" lost.
I haven't gone to see a movie 3 times in the cinema since The Matrix. This film has so much depth on so many levels. Bloody genius!
The last film I left the theatre totally stunned, and overwhelmed was The Dark Knight. This film tho? It left me tearing up at its beauty by the end of it. This movie is a magnum opus.
I think you mean "magnum opus". Word "opus" simply means "work".
What a truly passionate film. I absolutely fucking loved it! Thanks to everyone involved in the making of Blade Runner 2049.

Thinking about Roger Deakins having a meeting with a bunch of VFX artists lighting a scene gives me great joy for some reason
I won't pray for blade runner to win best picture this year because that will never happen. But i'll pray for at least it gets nominated.
G0RMAN LEE if Arrival was nominated, I have no doubt this will, but the competition this year seems heavier than last year
Suicide Squad won best Makeup...which I guess came from Killer Croc, but Blade Runner 2049 could easily take Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best SFX, and Best Makeup.

The funniest and most charming movie-talk I've seen so far. Thank You! :)

Don't worry, it will win Best Cinematography.

Strange Days
Gattaca
Dark City
The Matrix
Videodrome even inspired Akira(1988) and Ghost in The Shell(1995)

Sad that this masterpiece wont get nominated for the major categories while unremarkable and heavy handed movies like the post and get out will

Denis is incredible. 2049 is even better than the original. What a feat.
it won't get best picture nor director, cause it is a sci-fi film, but if this won't get best cinematography and production design, i am out!

JCORR76 neither, the miracle is their child
wtf is going on in this interview, did you put these guys on horse tranqualizers?
Wish they'd left out miracle premise and Ford
It’s sad that this masterpiece will lose to some “critically acclaimed” shitty chick flick
7:20 is that Will Smith?
No
Great movie, but I'm looking forward to the Reduced Cut. Way too many scenes were extended for no reason. 2 1/3 hours would have been plenty. "K" is right about the desk scene.
Brian Boru if you have to reduce a film to get through it better than you have failed the film. 2hr and 40 and something minutes is not that long
this is one of the best sequels ever made, along with godfather 2 and empire strikes back. shame it bombed.
Dunkirk vs Blade Runner 2049
ComedyLlytes TV Blade Runner 2049 is definitely better
is it normal that they are spoken to with their first name?
I wonder how 2049 would have ended up if Riddley had directed.
