I am glad I saw this video. it looks fun! The little anvil is neat, i immediately got on to kijiji to look for anvils in my area. So thanks for the inspiration.
The anivl that i think i found which may be of best value is a Smart Brochville No.4 size. No.4 i think means it is 4" wide? it is combined with a vice. has good corners and is lightly used but old, the horn is in great shape, hmmm, the vice is on the heal so there no through hole for drifting in the classic sense,,, That maybe a work around though. CAD $245. I think that is a good buy? What are your thoughts?
I dunno. its very unique looking but i don't know how it will perform. you should check it out. its like looking at your first birthday helium balloon loose its helium.
@@chazzops Mine was just an old 10 lb cast anvil from ebay years ago...ebay still has similar anvils. Just a matter of your interest and your price range. I have old blocks of steel that will accomplish the same thing, tho. :)
On your vanes. I forge my own 250 grain broadheads (looks like yours is around there or a bit heavier). Double edged. They're easily controlled by three helical micro vanes...so I'm thinking your turkey feathers are way, way too much. If you're firing right from your bow (and your arrows are straight)...vanes are almost unnecessary. Funny, I differentially harden mine, too lol. Lets me have a ridiculous edge, while making them virtually bulletproof in the field. If you search my channel for 'broadhead' you can see more. Cool video.
@@CrisAnderson27 You do nice work, bro! Not just the smithing but the handles too...exceptional. I think my arrowheads are a lot heavier than yours. I'm trying to tame my tendency to make them oversize. Getting there... The crow feathers almost never shoot well. Sometimes they're decent but rarely. I fletch them for fun. This arrow is way too long. I didn't cut back the dowel to proper length, so too much flex for already dubious spine. And my fletcher puts a twist in the feathers which works badly w/ broadheads. I've since bought a straight fletcher which much improved things as later videos (with turkey feathers) will show. I'll look into the micro vanes tho...never heard of them before. Yeah, i do love differentally hardening arrowheads. Much less risk for the reward. :D
@@lazerblade2 oh yeah, a regular campfire is enough for small things. Takes longer, tho. And the sun hides the steel's glow so makes it more difficult to judge. It's not ideal, but fun or good in a pinch. :)

I didn't realize you could forge with just a wood fire without a blower. Cool video.

And yeah, I'm no expert but I'd trim the feathers to about half that length and make sure the fletching is nice and straight.
