Popsicle is one of those brands that became so legendary it’s been turned into a household name replacing the generic version just like Tupperware, dumpster, Saran Wrap, etc.
We grew up in the late 50’s and early 60’s loving popsicles, but couldn’t afford to buy as many as we kids could eat. So, mom bought a popsicle mold from Tupperware. We’d make the cool-aid and freeze it in the molds. Sometimes we’d freeze juice or soda. Neighbor kids loved it. Mom was the coolest (pun intended). Great memories. Thanks for the video.
My parents did this too, partially because they were concerned about the sugar content of actual popsicles. So we made our own with orange juice, apple juice, etc.
I had forgotten about this sort of stuff. We did this too, and had an ice cream maker as well. I remember trying to make ice cream pops with the mold but it never came out right.
I worked for unilever for 10 years. We made Klondike bars, Ice Cream sandwiches and Popsicle twisty bars all in the same factory. Anytime we made popsicle twisty bars we threw away about 1/4 of them but it didnt matter. Its basically water, Sugar, flavor and food coloring. It was the only item we sold that we literally had one guy on the line whos job it was to empty the trash cans. Anything we made with cream we took more care to make sure the machine was running good enough to not make damaged bars. Also the popsicles didnt get listeria like the cream bars. So anytime we ran popsicle it was laid back free money. While we had to make sure cream bars were cleaned and sanitized once evry 24 hours the popsicle brands we could run 24 hours a day non stop for weeks if we wanted too.

This product is probably the best example of what happens these days - someone comes out with a decent product, and then it gets gobbled up by one corporation after another. Personally, I'd love to see videos about recognizable brand names that are still controlled by either the original creator or a descendant.
Popsicle's were an essential part of one's childhood. On a summer day, there was nothing like ripping open the paper covering the Popsicle and letting it melt in your mouth. Great memories!
I have such good memories having PopSicles as a little boy. I particularly remember the commercials that were out in the mid-to-late 90s starring Duke the talking dog. “Hey, baldy, baldy!” for Fantastic Fruity “Down boy, down!” for Sherbet Cyclone “The colors, Duke! Agreed. I still remember them fondly, even the part "From Good Humor". I was just so surprised to learn that they were actually rivals for over 60 years.
The cherry are most definitely the best. It used to be a blast getting them double popsicles back in the day. They were kinda like a wishbone lol. Sometimes you'd get that perfect split breaking them and you got two even sides, while other times one side would get just a stick and maybe a tiny glob of ice ready to fall off any second.
One of my earliest memories is my mom taking me and my sister to the corner store to get popsicles, my mom would also make my sister share her chocolate popsicles but I always wanted the flavour my mom got which was banana. I still remember seeing popsicles pete on the the packaging
As a kid, this was one of the best thing to have in your freezer to come home to after school. Much prefer the double stick too. Sometimes you'd break them in half, and sometimes you'd try to eat them together as long as you could til they fell apart. A classic! Great video.

I grew up in the 1980s and didn't really like the twin pops since there wasn't always someone to share it with or maybe two kids wanted two different flavors. You brought back memories mentioning the Jell-O pudding pops and gelatin pops--I ate those all the time back then!
Good old popsicle pete !! I remember during the 80's heading to the local beckers (in Ontario, Canada) to grab our popsicle and collect the points from every stick 😊 ah' the good old days 👍
What a coincidence. Today I was stuck in traffic next to a refrigerated truck branded with a big Good Humor logo. Then I noticed smaller logos for Popsicle, Bryers, Magnum, and Klondike. And now I get home, and find this is this week's video!
Nicely done sir, as always. While watching this episode, I couldn't help but think of another frozen treat that you buy which isn't frozen. You've seen them in the stores. They're called Fla-vor-ice. They used to be super cheap, and the nice thing for my Mom, we didn't have a lot of freezer space, so she could leave these in the pantry until she was planning on treating us kids. She could then throw 3 or 4 in the freezer in the morning, and when supper came and went, they were ready to eat! I feel that might make for an interesting episode!
I think it would be an interesting thing to see the company man review macro trends marketed among multiple generations, like popsicle as it became ubiquitous.
I remember growing up in the 90s eating the double stick popsicles with the wrappers showing Popsicle Pete on them. What I loved even more are the Creamsicles.

I remember summers at my grandparents where they would get boxes of them when me and my other cousins would come over. They'd always get the Rainbow pack which is basically like the basic pack of orange, cherry, and grape but here they got different flavors like lemon and blueberry. What sucks is that they don't sell those anymore. WHYYYYYY?!
People never usually liked the lemon and blueberry. So most people probably bought the regular 3 flavor pack or just bought cherry popsicles. The company seeing the 5 flavor pack not selling well probably discontinued them.
I grew up in Oakland & you maybe able to freeze a cup water if you live in hills in middle of winter. It can snow in the Oakland hills if all of conditions are correct & maybe that happen once a year or less. In the flat parts of Oakland not so much. Interesting story that Popsicles originated from Oakland as didn’t know that. I know that Mother’s cookie was in Oakland & you can still old bakery on East 15th Street. I used to go to bakery there get the circus animal cookies from small store they had there.
As someone that lived in Oakland, worked in Emeryville, it most definitely gets that cold at night during the winter, the thing is, it's only on clear winter nights when there's no cloud cover, hence no snow. It will hit 0°F here from time to time.
I know his granddaughter personally. The story is factual. I have heard it many times from her mother. She even gifted me an old epsicle label from the original popsicles.
Scribblers and this old Marvel edition of Popsicles were my FAVORITE as a kid. I liked all the scribblers, but the marvel pops from the early 2000s- my favorite flavor was hulk.
Popsicles were good enough that when those plastic bag tubes of juice (at some point called Otterpops? But I don't remember that from when I was a kid) became popular, it was common for us to be disappointed because schools and parents kept getting the extra cheap stuff that was less smooth and more icicle.
My high school science teacher, John Epperson, was the son of the Frank Epperson. He told us his dad invented the popsicle. My science teacher was probably in his early 70s back in 2006 when I was in his class.

Awesome work, I'd suspect Popsicle will be around for another 100, ENT's, Dentists and other doctors recommend them for tooth/ throat pain or for a quick sugar fix.

I was very pleasantly surprised to find this out not too long ago as well. Which is good bc I'm kind of obligated to not buy anything Unilever for the forseeable future.
I’ve always been calling it a popsicle ever since I was a little kid. Even up until when I was like 14 or 15, is when I realized oh, it’s a brand name. It’s funny how we’ve been Coleman popsicle this whole time but we never really understood the difference. Same thing with a bunch of other products like you mentioned. Bandit is one of them.
Popsicle has been so synonymous with summer. I enjoyed all three Popsicle flavors from the original trifecta (Popsicle, Creamsicle and Fudgsicle) with Fudgsicle being my most favorite. I just wish they haven't discontinued the yogurt variant, Yosicle, which they introduced over ten years ago. Those Yosicle Torpedo pops looked like an interesting take on the classic Popsicle Firecracker pop design...
I used to buy Popsicles when they were $3.59/box. Now they're $7.59/box; so I take a pass. For sure, no other brands I've tried beat the official popsicle brand flavor, so I usually just go with ice cream, now, instead.
By and large as brands go I would say popsicle is generally one that Is if noting else nostalgic to me so having it continue is alriight in my books. Not that I am a huge fan of such huge corparate entities owning everything but its none the less a nice thing to see the brand alive.
We still had double sticks here (Canada) well into the 90's. In fact that's mostly all you could get. Rootbeer was the rare highly sought after flavour. If you could find one of those in the store freezer it was a damn good day.
In 1966, Liberty Records [US] released a Jan & Dean album titled "Popsicle" that used the company's trademark logo of that time. The song was written in 1963 by Buzz Cason and Bobby Russell, and first recorded by the Southern California surf singing duo of _Jan & Dean_ for the 'Drag City' album in that same year. Liberty Records released the 1966 Popsicle album, which contained many other past recordings by Jan & Dean, as Jan Berry was no longer able to produce songs due to a horrendous vehicular crash that year. That song can found online; but to caution you that some of the audio mixes of that song nearly drowns out the singing. So, if you interested in seeking out that song, sample several audio posts of that song, you will find a good audio mix in the group.
Don’t forget about their mascot Man-of-Popsicle in the 2000s - “If it’s popsicle, it’s popsicle.” Also the ones that look like cartoon characters undoubtedly played a role in their comeback
I'm surprised Good Humor still exists. Stopped buying those years ago when they got smaller and more expensive and I guess other people did too because my local store doesn't even have them.
I love this channel. I don’t know how I came across it, but I am so glad I did. I have watched so many of these videos because I think they are detailed and very interesting!
I love Banana popsicles, along with cherry ! Fudgesicles are also a favorite as is the original ice cream sandwich !! I used to love hearing that music from the ice cream truck coming down the street as you knew you were going to have a great treat in just a few minutes.
As a Bay Area native, born and raised, I can safely say that back then, in the morning there will be frosting on the cars so it’s definitely possible that this story is true.
One of my life's biggest disappointments is experiencing the original pudding pops in the 80's, then being let down by the newer imposter they claim is a pudding pop. It's basically the "new Coke" of frozen treats.
I remember growing up in the 60's that there was a popular brand of "freezable liquid in a plastic tube" that were all attached, like maybe a dozen or so. It bugs me that I can't recall the brand name. It may have been a local product, but it was so cheap it was extremely popular. After freezing you'd tear off one tube, cut off the top and squeeze the tube to enjoy the "frozen treat."
My favorites from the ice cream man in the 70s included Bomb Pops, Sherbet Missiles, Fudgesicles and Root Beer Popsicles! For fun, count how many times Wolfman Jack talks about Popsicles in American Graffiti when he says his cooler in the radio station has broken down! Haha!
I remember sharing the twin pops with my brother and each of us getting twice the fun: we'd pick different flavours and split them so we got one half of both kinds. I think back then the root beer ones were my favourite.
Popsicle was well liked in my childhood, but we favored Freeze Pops. Personally I still miss Jello Pudding Pops the most, I can't understand how they ever fell out of favor.
As far as I remember, if a trademarked brand name is used as a adjective for a certain type of object (Xerox, Popsicle, Band-Aid, Jeep etc.) may turn into generic and genericized trademarks, meaning that the trademark be lifted as the brand name is treated as a normal word a part of the language (generic word), and it has happened before with Aspirin, Dry Ice, Flip Phone, Cellophane and more. For that reason Nintendo went out of their way in their promo materials to discourage people to call their console Nintendo, as people will start calling all consoles Nintendo (and they were). So I wonder if Popsicle has the same fears.
In the late 70s and early 80s, Bomb Pops were usually preferred if you were getting one from a ice cream truck vendor. They were larger, and those fins would get a little slushy as you worked on the first fin, which was pretty good. Popsicles were perfectly fine if you were getting them from a grocery store, though.
I went to my car mechanic shop which i have been dealing with exclusively for the past 7 years then dropped the car " was really busy" and told him outright, replace the starter it's going bad, I have seen the same problem countless times in forums and videos it is a common issue for the car starter to go bad after 130k miles, it was ticking instead of starting sometimes. He told me outright we won't do that before we diagnose it and make sure it's the source of the problem, the starter problem was showing on a daily basis but it was hit or miss, the car spent a full work day by starting the car letting it idle and switching it off to start again in few minutes, and it was the starter as I suspected. I respected the shop more, they refuse to work on anything before diagnosing the problem as instructed by the manufacturer. Now my car has 200k miles on it and it still have a lot to go with their care.
the fact that Unilever bought it. makes it clear why I do know the popsicle ice . They do use there OLA brand name for it here in the Netherlands. I loved the two part splitter (plus a lot of supermarket own brand that copied that) I did prefer the Orange, or Yellow flavour.
Can you do an episode on the good humor logo? It's found on ice cream all over the world just with different names in each place, for example Eskimo in Austria, Wall's in the UK, etc.?
Lived in the area for a while and I have yet to see a flicker of ice. I also don’t know why, but the cherry is one of my faves even though cherry flavor is generally on my bottom for most flavored things

We still had double sticks here (Canada) well into the 90's. In fact that's mostly all you could get. Rootbeer was the rare highly sought after flavour. If you could find one of those in the store freezer it was a damn good day.
I been a member for while love your video i think u should start doing two a week
I would love to see a video on that legal battle between Good Humor and Popsicle
It's 7am.... I'm "running" to my kitchen to get a cherry (my fav, too!) Popsicle from my freezer. 😂
Anything is possible, with popsicle.
I have not bought Popsicle brand in a very long time. I prefer natural-flavored fruit bars. I am also about to go make my own.
Do we have a "Popsicle" brand in Argentina? Hell no! Do I still watch the whole video with glee... HELL YES!
orange dream bar is my favorite. the rootbeer cream was really good but hard to find in stock anywhere.
trader joes is making a root beer cream pop right now!
Fricken love creamsicles, but buying the double stick Popsicle or getting one for a school event is still amazing!
We had those as a kid too in the late 90s early oughts. Fla-Vor-Ice, if I recall correctly. I hated them.
@@lpnp9477 Yes, that name rings a bell
My favorite Popsicle product is the Orange Creamsicle.
I always thought the Popsicle's name was a reference to its lollipop shape. The ad on 4:11 seems to support this
I went to my car mechanic shop which i have been dealing with exclusively for the past 7 years then dropped the car " was really busy" and told him outright, replace the starter it's going bad, I have seen the same problem countless times in forums and videos it is a common issue for the car starter to go bad after 130k miles, it was ticking instead of starting sometimes.
As always great informative video
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned in the comments already, but I’m curious why Popsicle stopped making Big Sticks (cherry/pineapple).
the fact that Unilever bought it. makes it clear why I do know the popsicle ice . They do use there OLA brand name for it here in the Netherlands.
I loved the two part splitter (plus a lot of supermarket own brand that copied that) I did prefer the Orange, or Yellow flavour.
I never even thought about popsicle being like the word kleenex
Could you do one on Hudson news? or just all of those airport exclusive snack/book shops? Was wondering how those businesses work
Can you do an episode on the good humor logo? It's found on ice cream all over the world just with different names in each place, for example Eskimo in Austria, Wall's in the UK, etc.?
Lived in the area for a while and I have yet to see a flicker of ice.
I also don’t know why, but the cherry is one of my faves even though cherry flavor is generally on my bottom for most flavored things
Honestly hearing about these massive food companies buying up everything just boils my blood.
Never knew it was a brand, just thought it was the name of a type of frozen snack thing
