Be cool if there was a kit that would return the TH400 to stock. I have a recently purchased vehicle with this trans, and this shift kit. Have all the original parts (I hope) in the box the shift kit came in (came with the truck).
The shift hit is nice, but think it's beating on the old drive train more than I would like, or the old Jeep.
Is there a way to soften the shifts without digging into the trans?
    Thanks!

I don't think there is a way to soften the shifts without changing parts. Unless the shifts are excessively harsh, the shift kit won't hurt the transmission.

Having to flat back it rough it is nice to have a lift and I had a torque converter grenade inside and filled the trans full of metal after 40 qts of aft flush and a filter change it still lives

If you drill a hole in the pan it will drain out then while you have it off weld the hole up or weld
a nut to the inside that fits a drain plug and you won't have the mess.

SP Steve I put one of those pans on mine and it had a drain plug, not that you want to find yourself draining it more than you have to.

SP Steve I need to order one of those for the 400 I'm putting in my C10, it's going in with the 598 BBC I had in my TA so it's going to need some beefing up.

Hi Steve I have a th400 that had the transgo 1-2 fitted with the hold first gear feature added.that feature has gone with the shift happening by itself at 6500 instead of 9000 like were I need it.any thoughts on possible problem .
Great video on the th400 boss.

SP Steve hi Steve yes this trans worked perfect for years with that feature added.all other operations are perfect.
Can I purchase a shift valve off you if you have one left over from kit .my trans guy moved far away and has now retired i used to work for him and i can fit it myself easily.

Hi Steve. Not sure if you are still monitoring this feature but if you are, I have a follow-up question. How in the heck did you get the rearmost pan bolt out?! I didn't see you needing to loosen the transmission mount bolts and slightly jacking up the transmission or moving the cross-member. I have a 2nd Gen Firebird and needed to do that on mine. Thank you.

Hmm,.. I don't know because I don't remember. I don't think it was an issue because I typically leave a couple front pan bolts loose and drop the back of the pan when draining a factory TH400 pan with no drain plug. Take a look at my Trans Am video for a perspective th-cam.com/video/dERnpiY2fRI/w-d-xo.html

@@SPSteve Thanks for sharing this feature Steve. I have a '74 Trans Am as well and my cross-member looks like yours. For some reason, mine hinders access just enough to the tune of 1/4 to 1/2 inch to the rearmost pan bolt. I have to raise the transmission a bit and place around a 1 inch socket in there to give a better shot at that bolt. Maybe GM had several cross-member sources back then with minor differences. Anyway I might try modifying a long reach 1/2" wrench and see if that helps next time.

Hi Steve. Where exactly did you place the jack stands in the front of your car? Also.....did you use jack stands under the rear axle or ramps under the rear wheels or something else? Thank you.

@@SPSteve Sorry for all the questions Steve. I'm getting ready to do the same procedure you did along with the same aluminum pan. Since this aluminum pan has a MUCH thicker flange than the stock stamped steel pan, did you have any issues attaching your shifter cable bracket that is fastened by two of the bolts on the pan?

I know this post is a few months old but you stated in one of your comments below, that it will only take off in second gear, you said you double checked the instructions and it says low is full manual, it will not shift out of low automatically, I'm not seeing that in my directions, what you might be looking at is it meaning it will not automatically up shift in first gear when it is in first gear, is your trans still starting off in 2nd?
