  • The multiple award-winning short documentary 'In the Shadow of the Tugtupite' - a cinematic portrait of despair and anxiety towards an unknown future for the Inuit of the world's largest island. The film questions the rationale behind past and future mining prospects in Greenland and how they are connected to a search for identity for the fledgling nation.
During a thirty year period from the 1950s onwards Greenland saw major societal change as the country went from being a colony of Denmark to a fledgling nation with aspirations of becoming independent one day. What had taken Europe 300 years to accomplish during the industrialisation was more or less forced upon the indigenous population of Greenland in 30. This had great consequences on every aspect of the Inuit way of living and was for many a devastating blow. Now, 70 years later new changes are on the horizon. Changes that are not necessarily for the good. This is the short film that laid the foundation for a call for an early election in the parliament of Greenland in the spring of 2021.

Oh god that last shot! I was meaningfully taken back to passages in the Hobbit as Bilbo is entering the back door to Smaug's Cave! Vivid as anything! Silently if not neatly connecting so many dots, bringing them into the conversation for people to have in their minds. Anglo-Nordic colonialism, history and folklore. I was cleaning the Hiroshima and Nagasaki memorial stone in Bradford, Yorkshire yesterday.

Was hoping to learn a little bit about tugtupite, but no educational content here.

Naaah, you’re wrong. All the important fact are there, but if you want to know about the chemistry of the mountain or the stone go check out Wikipedia. For politics, research the latest election in Greenland, and while you’re at it may I suggest looking up #colonialism or the concepts of #decolonize or narrative sovereignty. All the best to ya and thnx for checking out my film. cheers
