    Thank you for confirming that we can secure our bags with locks and non-zip material. So many people check bags in and end up with missing items or the entire bag gone.

      Afaik, all locks that go through TSA must be one that TSA has a key to, aka “TSA compliant” locks, so no cutting required

    Make sure you don't put anything valuable in your checked baggage! If you must have something valuable..put it in your carry-on which is visible to you!

      Johannesburg airport (OR Tambo) is the worst! So manya people lose stuff or have their luggage open when they take their luggage from the carousel. My husband luggage was opened and his perfume were gone. We couldn't bring all the perfumes in cabin luggage 😅

      I'm a baggage handler and I promise you the only time I've heard of anyone taking anything is if it falls out and we don't know what bag it has come from. We aren't looking to steal your stuff because we'll lose our jobs, there are cameras in the planes. Stick a lock on it to stop the zip from coming undone by accident and you'll be good

    Great advice. Only buy the suitcases that cost $1000 a piece. It’s like the GPS apps that keep sending you back to toll road - even after you said “no tolls”. Or the doctor who insists on prescribing only the newest drugs (no lower cost generic equivalent).

      They don’t have to be that expensive as I got myself a Tripp 5 years ago which isn’t zipped and it’s great. The only zip I have is the carry on as it’s easy access when something is needed.

      another great idea is to use an old looking duffel bag, unless you have fragile stuff or dress clothes. We throw our shoes, beach gear, towels, kids toys and other stuff we need on our trip that aren't fragile. Another benefit is that the bag is light so you can stuff more things in there than you can with a luggage.

      @@steveTGO the thing is that someone opening your suitcase would leave signs for you, u less they were really careful, which doesn't apply to most cases where you would assume they would just brute their way into as many luggage as they can in a short time.
      This includes my two times with the TSA, where one time the lock I had was missing (it wasn't a TSA lock) and the other time the lock (again not TSA) was still there but the zipper was damaged (only slightly).

      TSA have the authority to open any bag, whether locked or unlocked. They hv a key for “tsa locks”. If not a tsa lock, they can cut/remove lock

      Well it's it's zipper.. the handling throwinf luggages may inadvertently unzip your zippered luggage so things can fall out.. so a lock protects/keeps it together at least.

      TSA has to be able to get into the bag. If I put a lock, it's just one of those little generic ones to keep the zippers together. If you use a lock they can't open, they will just break it to check your bag.

      Probably a lock will actually make them want to peak inside. I didn’t put anything of value, just added some new skincare I got from a shop while traveling. My suitcase is old but has a lot of good zippers. I zipped them up and let it go. Everything was in order when I got it back. Basic yet reliable?

    When I know about this years ago, i only go for hard bags with latches, no zippers. Slightly more expensive but with a peace of mind. Also use Bright colors not black, or generic colors... there was a baggage thief that took black bags because it's such a common color. If they got caught they could just say sorry it looked like mine.

      Something similar happened 3months ago. One passenger has gotten his baggage from the conveyor, then he went to the empty chairs checking his things and about to leave when suddenly a lady approached him along with the luggage exactly the same as his. She mistakenly took his bag instead of hers. I was sitting nearby when I overheard them. I only took a glimpse, and perhaps the only difference was the label wrapped around the handle. Better be sure to put a unique indicator to know it’s your bag.

    On my work travels, as a person in the food business I often had food samples in my check in - guaranteed by the time I got to my destination some was missing 75% of the time. I fixed that issue by leaving a note with the food sample “Experimental Test Sample, Do Not Consume”

      @@CherylBerryl often food samples are in frozen state, packed in insulated coolers or temperature controlled containers. When using the appropriate packaging materials, foods items can easily stay frozen for 24 hours.

    If you carry the bag on, it will be with you the whole time. If you check the bag, TSA has to be able to get into it to check it and they will break the lock if they can't open it. So either way, the zipper doesn't matter.

      They will break the lock or rip it open. Usually they have a key that opens the lock. We put locks on so they don't open by accident and it keeps honest people out

      @@christinafan4476 theres suit cases with clips / clamps similar to a brief case. or the budget option would be to ductape over and around the suitcase acting as a deterrent. do quite a few rounds of it too to prevent any excuses like oh it must have ripped or caught on something and pealed off all on its own. make it so someone literally has to use a knife to cut it off to open the bag

      Just stick all clothes, deodorant etc in the hold luggage and have everything expensive in your hand luggage, that’s what I do because I cannot have a long holiday with just hand luggage unless you are willing to wear the same clothes for a couple of weeks 😂

    I checked a bag with full size brand new aphogee products for my hair. Got to my destination and they were gone. The thief was nice enough to leave a note saying my bag was pulled for a special review by TSA.

      That was nice of them. I've had that note on a trip to the mid west. It had an inspectod ID number or something on it, did yours not have that?
      They definitely also "reviewed" my bag on the trip back also and broke a wood tray I'd borrowed for the trip. They didn't leave a note that time.

We bought some jams and honey from a little church bazaar thing in England, and I wrapped them in socks and T-shirts and put them all the way in the center of the suitcase for extra protection. All but one of the jars was broken and soaked into the clothes. There was a note on top of the jars, all the way inside the socks, from security, saying that they were randomly selected for a bag check. There was a very polite "thank you for your cooperation" at the bottom of the note. Assholes. Those were new socks we bought for the trip. I had to throw out everything that was in the middle of that suitcase.

    In South Africa we are able to have our bags prewrapped with plastic type kitchen wrap. This way you bag is not the preference. JOHANNESBURG OR TAMBO. Beware.

    In Mexico they will ask if you want your luggage shrink wrapped before you enter the airport! It’s only like $10 bucks per luggage. It’s super quick and sturdy.

      But, when your luggage goes through the X-ray machine and happens to get flagged for a search (ex: they aren’t sure what your curling iron is or basically anything else for that matter), they will remove your shrink wrap and toss it in the trash. You won’t get your luggage back after the search because it goes directly on the belt to be put on the cart with all the other luggage. I’ve seen it happen way too much.

    I travel for a living, don’t check bags unless you have to. And if you have to don’t put anything in them you wouldn’t want to lose. Nobody is going to just open your bag from the carousel, but they can roll away with it and nobody would think anything of it.

    Just don't put your valuable documents, gadgets and money in the luggage. Bring them with you as you are usually allowed to have hand carries. You can let them have your dirty clothes but don't let them have your precious gems.

    I have travelled more then 50 times from country to country and city to city, they never opened my luggage or stole anything...but one time in Indonesia, Bali, i brought a perfume from Victoria secret, it was expensive and probably one of my favourite perfumes, it smelled so good, at the Airport the lady took it from my check in back...I know when she saw it she wanted it so bad, she stole my perfume and it still bothers me after years...hope she gets karma

I remember travelling from NY to Las Vegas and they tried to open my luggage but failed cause I had a golden padlock on it...When I travelled back to the caribbean my lil brother had something inside his luggage and they called him out to security and ask him to unlock his suitcase to remove the item...

    which is why i put a plastic protective cover over the bag (make sure it’s snug and not loose) as an extra step of hindrance. while they can always take it off they’ll always aim for an easier bag than one requiring more effort
    and your bag isn’t as scuffed as a bonus 🙂

    The TSA will actively prevent me from boarding my flight if I leave my bag unattended for any period of time. The only time my bags are left unattended by me is when it's being handled by airport staff. So unless you're admitting airport staff steal so regularly that a solution like this is required, I think I'll be fine.

    Depends on how much you value the bag also. Zippers can usually be rezipped. If you have a locked clasp that they don't have a key for, and they need to check something in there, the clasp will likely have to be broken if there isn't another way to access the bag.

    My suitcase usually have items I no longer need! Vacay is the best to get rid of old stuff😂😂😂. I usually travel light with carry on

    Oh yeah I KNOW TSA does this. They’ve done it to me plenty of times. Sometimes they’ll leave a note saying TSA checked your bag, the other times they don’t they just fuck my bag up

    Just don't put any valuable items in your checked in baggage and if you can avoid flights with long hours of transfer usually that's where the magic comes in 😅

    Customs and baggage handlers will always steal stuff from your bags that have zippers, no matter if they have locks or not. Buy hard shell suitcases without zippers, Delsy have amazing ones and they last longer that those zipper bags.

    TSA has a key to get into your luggage. They don't need a pen. The pen is for baggage handlers and other airport staff that steal your stuff.

    Ok but it's your job as a security to keep the bags safe not us, when I have the bag w me I'll be moving not letting it sit waiting for broke thug
