The next swiss revolver model of 1882 was used up to 1975, last users had been elderly military craftsmen, elderly auxillary policemen and elderly railway guards. The revolver cartridges had been 7,5 mm Swiss ordonance, similar to swedish revolver. For the reason that Switzerland had a large ammunition stock, for a long time Gouvernement could sell cartridges out of stock, but today they are rare, perhaps italian Fiocci company produces low numbers in their Historic Cartridge Line.

So in the end, after trialing a number of weapons, the Swiss settled on a service arm that doesn’t rapid load, doesn’t rapid eject, doesn’t auto eject, and is expensive to manufacture. It is beautiful, elegant to handle and a shiny object de art, that makes six rounds of ammunition go boom just like other less expensive options.

A sidenote to Swiss cavallry. The last 6500 swiss dragons dismounted in 1972 the last time, when swiss cavallry dissapeared. Compared to other european armies , the before 1914 100000 men swiss army had few cavallry. This had been , in contrast to other armies only dragons ( Dragoner). Also, but not realy cavallry, there had been up to 1920s the ,Guiden', a number of mounted soldiers added to every regiment ( brigade) , their job was escorting transport or artillry columns, messengers, some patroling/ reconnaisance etc., but not charging . So swiss army had no need for a real large number of massive cavallry revolvers. A thing out of firearms context, was swiss Field Priests Sidesword of 1911, showing that swiss gouvernement allways tried to solve a military problem as good as possible.

The mechanism keeps getting refined into fewer parts, but the complexity of the actions those parts perform increase, each one having to do more than before.
Having carefully crafted shapes having to interact together to achieve multiple goals at different points in their travel instead of individual components operating in a clear specific function.

Nathan Bedford Forrest supposedly never lost a cavalry engagement he was involved in. One of the reasons for this, I've heard from several books and small documentaries, was that his unit used shotguns. Some captured Henry rifles (or copies maybe) as well.
Is that true, first of all, and if so, why didn't other cavalry units in more armies do the same?

Cool. I guess I understand the logic behind the auto ejector. In my mind you keep shooting until you get a click instead of a bang, then the pistol reverts to a "single shot" where you load then shoot then load again then shoot again, ad nauseam. Probably over-complicated for the benefit you get, but I can understand the line of thinking that gets you there.

Is it just me or is the half-turn after loading not strictly necessary? I can see why you'd want to do it if the revolver's going to be carried for a while after loading, to keep the last loaded round from potentially falling out. However, in an immediate-fire situation it looks like the hand would rotate the cylinder into firing position, either when the hammer is cocked for single-action or during the trigger pull for double-action.

The logical next step would have been the Rolex Perpetual Revolver. Pity that the Swiss were distracted by the market potential of upscale watchmaking.
