Everything in moderation. Even too much of a good thing is bad. Look at athletes, many die of heart related issues because they push too hard. Moderation I believe is key.
you cannot really push too hard as your body will stop itself in a 99,99% of the cases the reason they die of heart issues are doping substances like anabolic steroids
Thanks for the info brother! I did my own research when I first started smoking a pipe. I even looked up famous people from the past who were pipe and cigar smokers to see how long they lived and what they died of. Most of them lived a long time and didn't die because of their pipe smoking. There are a lot of risks in life that have nothing to do with tobacco. I say moderation and just enjoy life. Take care man!
Im quite a newbie to pipe smoking. Doing once a day. But its just so great watching an informative video about health risks and reading all the comments. It seems that all you guys are not obsessed and biased about the topic. Always good to be realistic and check everything carefully and do research if you need it. Thanks.

Bart Krist, thanks for sharing. I don’t know much about biology, but I think it is important to note that although inhaling tobacco smoke is of course bad, but also just keeping it in your mouth or even using smokeless tobacco (chewing) or vaping etc - these are all means to get nicotine into your bloodstream and it is nicotine which increases vascular disease. Here is some interesting read www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3755365/
I was a full time firefighter for 32 years.....I suspect I inhaled more cancer causing smoke then than I do now as a pipe smoker.....apparently firefighters have a 4x chance of cancer anyway so a relaxing pipe isn't going to add much to that risk ..... enjoying these videos!
The only guy in my family to die from cancer chain-smoked cigarettes his entire life. Still made it to about 75. Of course, he was also a veteran of two world wars, a former prisoner of war, and a survivor of the Battle of Berlin, so perhaps there were some...extraneous variables in there. I think I'll run the gauntlet with the occasional pipe.
Glad someone said it! I see this stuff bandied around a lot - the reality is that there is always a risk associated with smoking, no matter how much. My PhD is in AI and Machine Learning for healthcare with a focus on lung cancer and I read studies all day every day - what you realise is that when it comes to lifestyle factors like smoking, all you can really say is that it increases your risk. Trying to quantify one type of smoking being safer over another ends up getting into murky waters, there are just too many confounding factors. I do and will continue to smoke a pipe, but I assume the risk is that I have a good chance of creating some issues because of it. As you say, there are some intuitive conclusions to draw such as less consumption equaling less risk, and not deliberately inhaling creating less risk of lung cancer, but even then, the waters are murky as I say. What you really need to look at with healthcare is meta-studies or systematic reviews. Even then, you're constrained by the quality of the body of work which the meta-study or systematic review has been done on in the first place.
George Burn smoked cigars his whole adult life and lived to be 100. Personally, since I’ve started smoking pipes again, my stress level has fallen significantly! I’d rather die stress free doing something that I enjoy than falling over dead at my office from perceived stress and worry. Pipe smoking is so relaxing and it often takes me to a place that my brain can simple shut off. (No junk…just a nice tobacco). I prefer aromatics
I like to smoke my pipes hot and drink whiskey at the same time. I also ride a motorcycle as fast as it can go half drunk and never have a skid lid on. We are still having fun at 71 years old. Live your life and let other people worry about health risks. You will be glade you did if you ever make it to an old man . If not you had one hell of a good time.
I'm a pretty young man yet I'm now about 50 times more likely to die of cancer becouse of a lack of knowledge toward what we were told to spray. Meh life goes on, neither me or the employer knew and neither did the company that made the stuff. The stuff did its job well. Now the new stuff doesnt work most of the time. Oh well a good pipe smooths the sole.
I enjoy one or two bowls a day now that I'm retired. I like a long smoke after lunch and then another long smoke in the evening that takes me through sundown.
I setup a policy on myself for my wife and kids last year. It was for almost 8 figures - so they really did a heck of a lot of due diligence and they were leaving no stone unturned. My cigar and pipe smoking did not increase my premiums at all. If I'd have smoke cigarettes it would have been a very different story according to the people I was dealing with.
This was a good and honest conversation. I really appreciate the common sense. I get kind of annoyed by people acting like there is no risk at all with smoking a pipe. I enjoy it, but there is a risk, even if it’s not necessarily lung cancer
Probably one of the more truthful analyses of the effects of pipe smoking I've come across yet from a Fellow pipe smoker. Moderation in anything is key. Location is too. If you smoke your pipe in an enclosed room full of other smokers 2 times a week you are getting a small amount of your pipes smoke by mild accidental inhale, but you are getting HUGE amounts of second hand. Which is proven to cause cancer. So there are many facets. The biggest is predisposition to cancer in your family.
Sorry Tom ... I went back in time to watch this video and glad I did. Very interesting input from you. I'm sure we can all agree that many things we do involve some form of risk. Driving a car, taking a plane ride, crossing the street, swimming in the ocean. Life in general is a risk of some sort.
Good advice and common sense...i guess life these days is a managed risk added to that I’ve always been a bit defiant and I got to 72 so I guess Ill keep smoking.
My doc told me straight up that the nicotine isn't the killer... And if I am required to fill out a form where it asks if I'm a smoker or not, that I should feel free to put an "x" in the "no" box.
A regular customer at my grandmothers restaurant who is well into his 60's close to 70 now once told me his doctor told him not to stop smoking his cigars and sipping bourbon because it was actually helping his blood pressure and stress levels.
As a motorcycle rider myself Im glad you brought it up. I smoke about a bowl a day and maybe a cigar once a week when I have the time to enjoy it. I always have something to drink and clean my mouth thoroughly after. And when I rife I wear all the proper gear. My mind set is that im going to enjoy my life and do the things I love and take steps to minimize the risks. No sense in being scared of everything. What would be the point to living?
Thanks Tom for the well thought out video. I like the idea of "managed" risks. As someone who commutes by bicycle year round, I have personally know a handful of healthy folks that have been killed while cycling, and I don't know anyone that has died from causes pertaining to pipe smoking. Good tips in regard to smoking cool and staying hydrated. Hard to not want a whiskey with my evening pipe though, hehehe ;)Take care my friend,Stephen
Stephen, if you enjoy that whiskey with your pipe, then have one for me ... heck, just enjoy it. Or maybe keep your mouth lubricated with water during the smoke ... -Tom
great video! The most I smoke is once in a day and usually it's not consistently every day. I drink water, root beer or chocolate milk when I smoke and every time I go to the dentist I ask him to check out any sores or anything else that seems out of place in my mouth. So far so good.
I just want to say to that end, I've heard studies say that stress and depression can actually be worse for you than smoking, drinking, drugs or even "bad" foods can.
Smoked cigars for 20 years. Now in my 40s I've switched to a pipe. I have never smoked cigarettes. Point being I'm not addicted to premium cigars or my pipe. I can go days or weeks without smoking. Not the same with cigarette smokers. They mix in addictive chemicals to cigarettes and it's a well known fact. Are pipes safer? Is anything safe? Researchers say hot coffee or tea can cause cancer. Look at all the people that die of lung cancer but have never touched a tobacco product. Everyday we roll out of bed we take some kind of risk. My sister died of breast cancer in her 30s. No family history of it. She was healthy as horse but she died anyway. Life is too short to worry about most things. I hope to meet some of you in the afterlife.
sean mckee lol not in australia you have to be a millionaire to smoke cigarettes... It bloody costs you around a dollar for 1 and coming in a pack of 30...
When you bear in mind that each cig is around half a bowl worth, you can visualise why the difference is critical. Imagine smoking even 5 bowls a day, let alone the 10-15 bowls you'd need to meet the average cigarette smoker
hi so I'm a cigarette smoker for 6 years and it becomes a big addiction and I don't know if pipe or cigarettes a healthier ( I know the two can do cancer)
I was researching various health insurance policies and I found out from a number of them that if you smoke 4 or less times a week they will not give you a higher premium. They see no extra health risk to charge you more for being a smoker.
Great video ! I'm 60 and smoke two to six bowls of Prince Albert a day. Depending on weather My dentist told me there was risk of irritating the soft palate In the mouth. My doctor is Mormon and doesn't like tobacco or coffee. I have to drive on busy roads most days and consider it riskier by a long shot. "Happy smokes"
I'm with you! Seems that having a glass of water or other benign beverage alongside as you smoke is a good thing (not alcohol or hot or acidic drinks, which wash away even more of the mouth's protective mucus layer) is a strategy, as is taking a break if you feel irritation in your mouth. -Tom
I remember it used to be more so noted in the past the association of lip cancer with pipe smoking. My suspicion is that may have had more to do with vulcanite stems since vulcanized rubber contains nitrosamines and more could be possibly created from constituents in the rubber reacting with saliva. So, I personally don't buy pipes anymore that have vulcanite stems. As you mentioned from your club doctor tobacco variety can play a role in risk. From my research dark air-cured varieties have much higher carcinogens than flue cured. I read an European study on the developmental cancer rates of cigarette smokers depending on the respective variety of tobacco they smoked. For the duration of the study, those that smoked dark air-cured blends showed development of cancers as where those that smoked flue cured blends did not. The highest levels of nitrosamines I've seen noted was Indian dark air-cured. Cigars can be incredibly high too. If one can smoke virginias with ease then that would be the better choice but, myself along with many others can't handle the virginia bite. Todd
Interesting observations, Todd. An old vulcanite stem ... is like licking the sidewall of the tire on your car, on a hot day. I did read in one of the studies that much pipe tobacco (burley) is alkaline, which allows greater absorption into your mucus membranes than an acid environment (Virginias). More study needed! -Tom
Yes, that's my understanding also. The cigarette companies went so far as to add ammonia to tobacco to increase alkalinity and enhance nic. absorption. In the industry I think it is called "impact boosting."

When I'm outdoors smoking cigars or smoking pipe I actually spit a lot. Don't know if that helps lower the risk of getting any mouth cancer but it also helps me from feeling to green in the gills. lol
Filters should make quite a difference. I read that they take out about half of the nicotine and tar and they cool down the smoke and prevent the tobacco from "biting". I cannot imagine that getting tongue bite is healthy ...
Rich, pipesmoking is a gateway to meaningful conversation - seriously! And I'm flattered by the comparison to your bro-in-law, though he might not be! :) -Tom
It's incredible how people who smoke a pipe don't understand that we all inhale. Maybe not purposefully but we all do it and it's a risk, maybe a lower risk but it's still there and we take that chance. Do I want my son to smoke a pipe, no and do I want to encourage pipe smoking to non-smokers, no again. But to smokers of cigarettes if they can't just quit, yes I'll encourage the pipe as a way out. IMHO we take chances in life, some good choices and some bad. Is smoking a pipe a good choice? The decision is yours but for whatever choice we make we must take the possible consequences to our action and live with them. Enough of the preaching; enjoy the pipe in good health folks and another great informative video Tom :)
What about weekend campers and bushcrafters who spend hours in front of smoking fire? Maybe that should be also discouraged. Or people who live in cities that have polluted air?
Great video sir, very informative. You mentioned how doctors are now saying cancer is more likely caused by the combustion of something. It's interesting to note that "apparently" no one has every gotten cancer from smoking marijuana. Could be the chemicals released from the tobacco I suppose but I'm not sure if I buy the "combustion" reason.
Let's talk about your suggestion that nobody has ever gotten cancer from marijuana. What research supports that idea? I'd love to hear about it. My impression, from spending a lifetime around daily marijuana smokers, is that many of them are also cigarette smokers, and by the nature of the process, they draw deep - as deep as they can, often for as long as they can, to get the most out of a toke. More research needed! -Tom
NWPipeSmoker well we can't bunch in pot smokers who smoke cigs too, totally discounts the notion. I agree yes that more research is needed certainly, but it's almost certain that pot won't kill you. I'm not an advocate for either pot or cigs but just curious about doctors saying it's specifically combustion that causes the cancer. By that logic burnt toast should give you stomach cancer. Maybe it does, lol 😂.
I'm not discounting any info here, or any examples of folks living into their very late years without smoking related illness. However, one aspect left out of nearly all of these discussions is epigenetics. Objectively and factually, there are those of us who have our anti-cancer genes turned off and will get cancer regardless of lifestyle just as there are those of us with anti-cancer genes active who could lead lifestyles that promote cancer and remain cancer free. the hard part is seeing the common ground between the two.
Likewise, Bill! Those are fun, aren't they? It can be tough, if you're shy, to meet up in a social situation like that, but there are guys who come and just hang out and don't say much, which is great, too. See you in April! -Tom
ive smoked pipes before, usually friends pipes and rather randomly, but i recently bought my own pipe. I dont smoke it everyday or even twice i week. i smoke when i write or if im reading, etc. thanks for the info.
Hey Tom! I know how that random aromatic smoke goes. Nice every once in a while. Damn...The cancer thing...Loads of booze here on my end, lol. Pure water sure is a great thing for sure. I'll still gamble on the calmness and lowering stress and of the blood pressure it gives me that I'll live longer. Great vid as always amigo. Cheers, James.
My grandfather never smoked, never had a drop of alcohol in his life, yet died at 75 years old from esophageal cancer(that spread to his lungs). Go figure. My father, a physician of nearly 40 years, has been quite adamant about how "smoking" is bad for ones health. Having attended a day lecture/conference at a local hospital with my dad when I was young(around 10ish), they had a fresh set of lungs that were removed from a "lifelong smoker" on ice, on display in a glass case. Blackened and really nasty looking, oozing tar, inflamed and bubbles all over it. The fellow was (95) when he died, according to the little chart detailing life history. Well, that image seared into my brain kinda turned me off of eating the catered lunch provided for the attendees, pasta with red sauce and salad IIRC. My other grandfather(mom's dad) smoked a pipe for many years, and rolled his own cigarettes "that whistled" according to my mom(her dad). Apparently he gave up smoking as a gift to her for my parents wedding. Maybe her marrying a doctor was a reason, lol. Well, to round out this longwinded comment, I'm 34, and awaiting my first two pipes in the mail: two MM cobs and a couple tins of recommended blends a friend steered me towards. Due to be arriving this week, so I'll be lighting my first bowl this next weekend. I've tried cigarettes, tried a vape, and tried cigars. All multiple times, just to see if there was anything that caught. Well, each one caused me to nearly puke. Fingers crossed that pipes won't turn me green 🤣!
Hey Tom...Thanks for this video. I will be reading all the information in the links you provided. My Doctors...both Heart and Family agree that with heart issues, it's all about the nicotine. They said nicotine makes your blood "Sticky" and easier to clot, also damages and constricts your arteries and reduces your oxygen levels in your blood. Their advice was cut way back, and switch to a very low nicotine blend....Or give it up completely. Thanks for the good wishes Tom....I appreciate that very much! Be well....
I've been hearing from a few folks that nicotine has some effect against Alzheimer's ... have to find some research about that. We want you happy and healthy - whatever that takes! -Tom
very nice video! informative and logical. I smoke approximately 4-6 bowls a week for the relaxing effects it has on me. May I ask how much do you smoke? Keep up the good work and greetings from Greece
Cancer begins when the body's PH level drops down to a highly acidic range, which causes lymphatic system to stop working correctly, and dead cellular waste begins to be dumped into the body's bloodstream as the lymph channels swell. Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, fact. So smoke you're pipe all day long as much as you like because let me tell you, if you eat right, get enough oxygen and nutrients, you're body's PH will remain balanced and cancer simply cannot survive in that environment, as soon as you compromise the immune system and acidosis sets in this is when you enter the teratory of cancer. If you're body's PH is alkaline you can smoke all day long and cancer simply will not be a reality, but if you're immune system is comprised and your diet is full of sugars and processed food ect and you keep pumping the body with carcinogens you will eventually die... simple as that . Keep you're body's PH alkaline and you'll be fine . As for genetics..it takes 23 separate genes to cause cancer to form, these gene's are turned on and off via environmental signals, stress diet ect , it's not genetic, is epi-genetic
You have to inhale some of it. I can't imagine how you could keep something like that near your face without inhaling some of it. Now the reason you can't stand a cigarette in my opinion is from the additives in the cigarette not necessarily the quantity of smoke you inhale from your normal habit. I gave up the habit but it was an enjoyable habit. I was always looking for a new rich flavor and would drive over 30 miles just to get my hands on something that was new to me. Nice video man.
There will be, the risk isn't zero. But the risk is a lot less for a number of reasons that include the reduced likelihood/frequency of inhalation. Either way, I'm content keeping up a very relaxing hobby
I don't want to be too old to enjoy my life. If I can't do anything but lie in a bed and mumble then kill me. When my ability to do simple tasks for myself ends I don't want to be here anymore. I think the way I feel now I can easily be alive and well far into my 80s. Thats good enough for me. Let me enjoy a couple grand kids a while then my life will be fulfilled.
hello NW pipe smoker very informative information I love smoking my pipe and I try an smoke at leas one bowl a day and as u said smoke cool and sip ur pipe you knw I've always wondered how come it is that smoking a pipe is not Addictive like smoking cigarettes I can leave my pipe alone for months but ppl that smoke cigarettes they are addictive I never understood that concept great video and I also love bent shapes pipes too lol happy smoking my friend😊😊😊😊
Cigarette smokers purposefully inhale smoke into their lungs, which causes the nicotine to enter the bloodstream. (red blood cells are used to transport oxygen, so if you pollute your lungs with nicotine, the bloodstream will also become polluted with nicotine) While nicotine can be absorbed through the mouth while pipe smoking, it's nowhere near as concentrated as when it's absorbed into the lungs.
Once upon a time the air we breathe and the food we eat were different but above all I think it depends on where and how we live. I am 55 years old, I have been ill for 7 years and I am sure that pipe and cigars have had few faults. I will smoke my pipe as long as there is air in my lungs. I'm pretty sure that day will come at the right time.
I love your scenery in your videos, I'm tempted send you a nice HD camera just so the videos are in higher quality lol. Maybe a hero 4 black or something lol.
Got one - files are so f-ing huge that I can't deal with them, with my antique computer gear. Half-HD is what I call it (640x480). Gotta love the color of the Foveon sensor on the Sigma, though. -Tom
I am in the twice a week column and always outside, which I consider the best way to limit my second hand smoke inhalation. Love the unflavored mineral water combo.
Central Market - much of the time Talking Rain seltzer is $1 per 2-liter bottle. See you at the next meetup, or Friday at CargoHold to smoke some Cult Blood Red Moon - join us! -Tom
So if I have this right - smoke more, smoke bigger pipes, drink while you smoke, dont smoke cigarettes, and generally just keep on pipe smoking because the danger is ver y low but the joy is very high. Cheers!
good one, love this camera or filter it almost looks like super8 , anyway, I ride a motorcycle everyday to work. the MCN statistic while unbiased also is loaded by reported accidents. a small side swipe in a car is not much maybe not reported but on a bike it could be a wreck, 33 time more likely to be in an accident or 33times that accident will be 'bad'. I will go check the link. and how about the risks of pipe smoking, you really can't do a study and subject people to harm to prove it. I really feel while there is risk, it isn't worse than sitting by a fire camping or by the hearth. cigarettes have been tested and reviewed but they can only by extension attach findings to pipe smoking with such little and mostly anecdotal evidence of habits. but we do what we enjoy. I am glad to see you are doing well.
I'm a fan of Sigma's Foveon sensor - this was captured with a Sigma DP2 Merrill. I like the quality of the color, and depth of field, and video sizes are still reasonable enough to work with compared to full HD. It's cranky, though, not a casual point and shoot. David Hough's '33 times more likely' statistic seems to me well-reasoned, recognizing with any study there's no way to capture data 100% accurately. But I'm just me, not a statistician or clinician who would be better able to evaluate quality of studies. My friend Eric (who is more of that mind) shared another study, so the vids on this aren't done, yet. -Tom
Like others said, moderation. If you smoke 20 bowls a day then you are risking health issues just as if someone eats 20 burgers or pieces of cake a day they are putting themselves at risk. One burger or piece of cake a day is not going to kill you or make you fat and I relate pipe smoking in the same way. BTW my Grandad smoked cigars daily as well as chewed tobacco like it was going out of style and he passed from natural causes never got cancer, I also believe genetics play a huge role
I make my own from refrigerator-chilled-water-supply-tubing from the local home improvement store - look back in my vids on cleaning up an estate pipe, there are several. Lasts forever, gives a good bite, nominal cost. -Tom
I read that even non-smokers have a 100% chance of death.
That is always the elephant in the room, eh?
-Tom
Sitation please? :p
I’m gonna need information from a reprobable news source.

This guy is very relaxing to listen to. Also I like that mug. It looks like the bottom half of an old Coleman thermos.

This comment just brightened my day! Yes, yes it is!!!!!!
That's very informative, David - thanks for sharing that! And that's an act of love, taking care of those you care about, even after you're gone.

This was a good and honest conversation. I really appreciate the common sense. I get kind of annoyed by people acting like there is no risk at all with smoking a pipe. I enjoy it, but there is a risk, even if it’s not necessarily lung cancer
It is said that the fumes from sitting in traffic is worse than pipe smoking.is that ever brought up?
Noe that I've read - interesting point, though.

Well Hell, Life's a risk... Seize the Day. Cancer surviving pipe smoker here.
And may you continue to smoke with us all for a very long time to come!

I smoke my Pipe 2 to 3 times a day , greatly reducing my stress , wonderful way to unwind
My doc told me straight up that the nicotine isn't the killer... And if I am required to fill out a form where it asks if I'm a smoker or not, that I should feel free to put an "x" in the "no" box.
Great information! 10:32… Priceless. I laughed at the same time, and then laughed even harder upon rewind. R.I.P. Uncle John.
you're a cool guy.
What would be the point to living?
i don't think anyone argues that there is NO risk to pipes and cigars, it's just a matter of choosing how much of a risk you're ok with

What a great video. A chat among friends, out on a beautiful day.
great video! The most I smoke is once in a day and usually it's not consistently every day. I drink water, root beer or chocolate milk when I smoke and every time I go to the dentist I ask him to check out any sores or anything else that seems out of place in my mouth. So far so good.
Good job! I do the same (though with water, but the visits to the dentist).

I think popular opinion fuels more "studies" than factual data in most cases.
I just want to say to that end, I've heard studies say that stress and depression can actually be worse for you than smoking, drinking, drugs or even "bad" foods can.
Michael Werbovetz Being lonely is scientifically as worse as heavy smoking.
I pretty much agree with you on all counts.
-Tom
The smoking frequency of cigarette smokers is the biggest factor i think. They smoke 30-40 times per day.
sean mckee lol not in australia you have to be a millionaire to smoke cigarettes... It bloody costs you around a dollar for 1 and coming in a pack of 30...
Actually alot of smokers are a pack a day around 20 per day, the in average are 2 pack per day.
@Keir Campbell You haven't met my old team leader. He'd go through two packs of cigs a day. He still burns through a pack and a half so 30 now.
When you bear in mind that each cig is around half a bowl worth, you can visualise why the difference is critical.
Imagine smoking even 5 bowls a day, let alone the 10-15 bowls you'd need to meet the average cigarette smoker

I was researching various health insurance policies and I found out from a number of them that if you smoke 4 or less times a week they will not give you a higher premium. They see no extra health risk to charge you more for being a smoker.
Interesting ... thanks for sharing that.

something about you is very listenable. And you make me wanna smoke my pipe too!
I enjoyed your talk. just relaxing informitive and your smoking is cool.

Agreed! And well stated.
-Tom

Their advice was cut way back, and switch to a very low nicotine blend....Or give it up completely. Thanks for the good wishes Tom....I appreciate that very much! Be well....

Most of the pipes on amazon are found under the “health” category
Once upon a time the air we breathe and the food we eat were different but above all I think it depends on where and how we live. I am 55 years old, I have been ill for 7 years and I am sure that pipe and cigars have had few faults. I will smoke my pipe as long as there is air in my lungs. I'm pretty sure that day will come at the right time.

good one, love this camera or filter it almost looks like super8 , anyway, I ride a motorcycle everyday to work. the MCN statistic while unbiased also is loaded by reported accidents. a small side swipe in a car is not much maybe not reported but on a bike it could be a wreck, 33 time more likely to be in an accident or 33times that accident will be 'bad'.
