    I used to have 4 maxamps packs. Only 1 of my 4 ever lasted the test of time, I still run it occasionally to this day. I had a 1550 4s lose a cell on the third cycle, and the other 2 died much faster than usual with minimal damage to the pack. However, the one 1300 4s pack that is still going strong was always my best performing pack over my r-lines and black labels. One of the reasons people shell out the money is because maxamps doesn't build the pack until the order is placed.

    I used to use MaxAmps in my RC cars back in the day. I'm from the city they are made in. So when I got my mini quad I couldn't find any batteries because everyone was sold out of and 3 calls around 500mah for it so I called up MaxAmps and a week later I went to and picked them up. I used them all last year and loved them they never got hot never puffed up when 3 of my 4 Thrust batteries failed. It my be more expensive but the warranty is great and in my opinion they stand by it.

    I was pretty excited to see this test. We ran Maxamps 1600mAh HV 4s for spec racing last year on Thrust-UAV Riot 250R. People really had no care of the battery health and would just push em as hard as they would go. I was amazed on how difficult it was to kill these batteries, even to puff them in regular racing, comparatively was a chore. Been running the 1050mAh 6s pack in the pre season and have been nothing but impressed. Sent 2 packs off for warranty to have a balance lead replaced and a discharge lead replace and it was easy peasy!

    I fly with two guys from Maxamps all the time, both of which are very active in the local FPV scene. We’ve talked a lot about their batteries and why they cost so much. If you need the best, maxamps is it. When I can’t finish a two minute race, I’ll fly maxamps no doubt.

    The warranty is really good actually. I had a battery (surface) the dropped a cell and I called them and let them know. They asked for a couple of pic of balance and charge rate I believe. The sent me a brand new replacement! Awesome company, I believe part of that price is for the warranty.

    I bought a pair of the MaxAmp HV 1350? Batteries a year or so ago. They are still running strong and alway felt like they had a lot less sag than any other batteries I own. You’ve confirmed my suspicions. Great batteries, but man are they $$$ if you’re just going to destroy them on a racing quad.

    This is the sort of battery sometimes needed for electric ducted fan aeroplanes because they draw a lot of current but tend only to fly for relatively short times. Obviously your measurements of current and duration under load are useful but I would also like to see measurements of Effective Series Resistance (ESR) which would indicate how much of the stored energy is disparate in heat. I use a Wayne Giles ESR meter as well as noting the ESR each time I recharge using my iCharger.
    I don't buy very expensive LiPos but like most of my friends (some even fly quads) I buy relatively budget Turnight or Zippys from places like HobbyKing. I have a couple of Turnigy Graphene 2200 3S packs and they measure around 3milliohms/cell. I don't push very hard in the foamies I use them in (40 amps max and that only for a few seconds on a pull up) but I'm more interested in their longevity (ie number of recharge cycles) which is difficult to measure quickly.
    Yesterday I flew my quarter scale Percival Mew Gull which weighs around 4kg and is powered by a 6S 40C LiPo pack. I draw a maximum of 65 amps but mostly it's less than 20 amps (I have telemetry on the current) and it's quite aerobatic.
    I know you and most of your followers are quad flyers but most of the high capacity LiPos I see intended for quads are low C rating and really directed at endurance rather than speed. So I assume these high C packs are intended for racing but do even quad racers need (or even desire?) 1.5kw. That's more than my 4kg scale model needs :) I suppose it's car/truck racing where these power levels are needed but surely they need endurance, too, which 1.5AH isn't going to provide. So I wonder who these batteries is directed at?
    Sorry for the long post but I found your video of interest. I'd like to see your test set up. Thanks.

    Thank you for your hard work to educate us. I’ve been searching the internet for knowledge on this subject. Although these test are helpful in choosing a brand of battery, I was hoping you had some kind of test to analyze weather a 1300mah or a 1500mah 4s was better for a 5” quad. Maybe a comparison between flight times vs performance. I understand that the higher mah will likely have less sag, but will the extra weight cancel out extra flight time? Will the 1500 fly longer cause it can handle more “pulses “ or will it’s heavier weight cause more amp draw and therefore perform similar to a 1300. Or perhaps a 1300 will last longer?
    Of course the results could vary from brand to brand battery to battery.
    Sorry for the rant, I know it’s and old video but I’m about to buy a hole fleet of batteries and don’t know which to choose.
    Ps: if you do another test like in the video try the Ovonics. They’re cheap and I’ve seen a few “pro “ pilots use them

    Is this a 2p or a 1p 4s ? because apples and oranges ;) discharge curves will vary. Even the price would sugest it's a double-uped 750mAH pack internal.

    Josh - your impressions of who a product is good for would interest me greatly on ALL product reviews. For example, in this case, I think the cost of these would make sense for somebody who is spending hundreds of dollars to travel to races... which is a different cost::performance domain than most of us who are going to noodle around at local fields.

    Nice Review, but im confused even after all this, does the battery do what its claiming, my interpretation is it does not. So therefore its overprice marketing bumbo jumbo.
    Me personally id buy them but once you factor in conversion rates and postage i can buy 2/3 batteries for that same amount.
    You guys are so lucky with the choices you have. Great review and i do love the batteries form factor.

    Even just having a page on your website with links to the existing test data sheets you have so far would be useful. It's annoying having to dig through the whole YT playlist to find each datasheet.
    It looks like the main issue with "Graphene" packs is that they're heavier (lower energy density, even if higher power density).
    Would be interesting to test some of the Turnigy Graphene packs. They used to be very popular at the local races.

    I’m so curious what the profit margin is on these batteries, could it really be double the cost to make a battery a little better than all the other batteries? I’m thinking if this pack was say 35 instead of 65 I’d buy a dozen of them right now. Makes me wonder if they are greedy or that little bit of extra performance cost that much. Is that is the case that it’s double the cost it’s definitely not worth it. It’s not like it discharged 3000mah at 200 amps

    speaking of expensive batteries the racetek battery might be one to take a look at. its sold as a silicon graphene 2400mah hv 100c. i picked up a 2 of them and ran them in my quad for a little while and was happy with it. even after pulling 120 amps on my osd the battery still came down cold. the great thing about it is its not very big just a little bit bigger than a normal 1300mah battery.

  • @WForrestFrantz
    @WForrestFrantz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    175 C means that you can discharge the entire battery in 1/175 of an hour or 21 seconds. So if assuming the unlikely possibility that you could discharge 50% of the battery or 1450/2 mAh in 20 seconds the discharge rate would be (1.45 Ah*50%*3600 sec/min /20 sec) 130 amps continuous for 20 seconds!!! It failed to do 100 amps for less than 10 seconds per the video test. But, that discharge rate is still impressive.
    As a comparison, a R-Line 95C 6S 1300 mAh battery handled 7 seconds at 100 - 130 amps in an actual drone flight (strapped to a test-stand so amps could be properly measured). The comparable MaxAmp (at that time) a 150C 6S 1600 (so a larger battery) lasted for 6 seconds in the 100-130 amp run.
    A good post. Thanks!

    What is the total IR of the pack and the individual cells on Wayne Giles IR meter when the pack has stabilized temp of ~72F? When you count your pulse tests, you need to count the valleys, not the peaks (these are the discharges). At 100 amps, it took 3 pulses, or 70C, maybe you need to short out the battery to get the claimed 175c, then claim the warranty :)

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The peaks are what I count because if it doesn't peak, then it failed the last test. I'm not sure that makes sense...
      If it goes below 14.0 volts then the test is stopped and there is no subsequent peak. But the test failed because it dropped below 14.0 So if it doesn't have a peak after the valley, then the valley doesn't count.

    the internal resistance seems to be very low for the pack. Around 20mOhm. I can't see a lot of difference in the relaxation time compared to the other batteries you tested. very interesting results.
    Where does the battery tester measure the voltage? Normally you would connect some extra leads directly to the cell.
    Would be nice to document the testing with some pictures of your measuring setup on the upcoming website.

      His machine measures at the terminals and not the pack leads, but it has what amounts to lead voltage drop calibration, and 2ga cables.

      All brushless motors can spin either direction. The CW/CCW marking simply indicates which direction the threads go.

    I think you're an alright guy. I mean, I'm not not gonna kiss your ass about how you're one of the best friends anyone trying to get into this hobby could ever have or anything, but you're alright.

    Is that burst or continuous? As GNB have 120C batteries that claim 240C burst.

    Im just now finding this video....So, Im in the PNW, and I wanted to grab a few packs while passing through a town just to re-up my battery collection.
    called a few places in Spokane, and one of them mentioned MaxAmps was here in town and would be able to put some together.
    I called them, and they told me their batteries are "custom ordered" and 4S starts at 75$ a pack. I told the guy to go screw himself and hung up. LMAO.

      At that price, I don't care HOW GOOD the battery is. You can get 4 of the 1500 CNHL for that price.

    Have you considered doing an abuse test to see which batteries hold up to over discharge or extended periods of not being in storage? It would be cool to know which batteries are more sensitive. I doubt anyone is perfect at not abusing the battery in some way. Like I recently saw on one of your videos. Do you think it is possible to test to see how much damage is done by things like that or is that way too much work and or too difficult to get real world results? Thanks

      I have thought about it but I think this would be tougher to do in a rigorous way.

    I'd love to see how the r-line V2 HV compares to these, looking at the results on lipo bench they smash the v1 batteries. I have one and I can't imagine getting any more performance, they're unreal

    Joshua, Please test the Rotor Riot Hypo batteries next. I'm sure they could sent you one or two if you ask them. I'd really like to know how they stack up. Thanks and keep up the good work!

      I'm hesitant to test those packs because of my affiliation with Kwad Camp. I wouldn't want it to appear like I was playing favorites.

    Oh and I forgot there was another person testing the max amps and his results were much different than yours on that battery, he basically called them crooks and that they were the worst of all the batteries that he tested. So maybe you got a good one, I’m thinking they mix them up send out some good ones with bad ones because if they were all bad no body would buy them at those prices. Anyway good videos and nice to know that max amps can perform very good and are capable

  • @bmanske1
    @bmanske1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The battery sounds like a real powerhouse. BUT what is it good for? What real world results does this impressive performance get you? This is not to malign the battery, but to point out that the performance of a system is limited by it's weakest point. So the battery pumps out 100A. Will the ESCs handle it? Motors? If you did have a system that handled the current extremely well, what good is 60 seconds if you need a 2 minute qualifying run?
    All I can think of right now is that this performance may enable tech that is not possible with other batteries out there. My money is betting that you can't tell the difference between this and other good batteries that you own. Please let us know if you can perceive actual differences in flight and if you can get a friend to connect the batteries to make it a blind test.

      Not worth it to me, but on my rigs I can sag a fresh 90C battery in a minute, and bring it down to 13 volts in 1.5 minutes, so, for a single, speed demon run battery, It would be worth it.

    • @bmanske1
      @bmanske1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point. Speed records / runs would be an excellent application for this battery.

      Every quad i'v had in the past year and a half has been limited by battery discharge capacity. Even running 2450kv and relatively low-load cyclone 5040 props, I still hit over 100A peak current. With that said, there's no way in hell I'd pay 65USD for a single battery pack, but there's definitely an advantage to be had with something like this, in real life terms.
      TBH, the blatantly false advertising pisses me off though. If you have a high performance battery, then let it speak for itself, don't make up bullshit numbers. On cnhl and other cheap packs, I don't particularly care because it's expected from chinese brands. If you expect to be taken seriously as a brand, you can't lie to your customers in a major way.

      JB is doing his own amp rating, and know C rating is not Amp rating, there is some math involved, Mah effects C, sometimes higher Amps vs. C, sometimes lower. If you see, everything he has tested is well below their rated C.

    I have over 200 cycles on my miniquad battery.....I only have one though!!! They're local here and great guys!!! Just tough to justify it in the quad area!!! My 150c is semi noticeable in punch...but I definitely get better run times!!!

      McFlyAwayFPV ! Well said, young man! There's definitely a higher density of power. The weight of a 1300mah with the capacity of a 1450. These batteries can really take a beating. They laugh at full throttle like it's a joke.

      The CNHL 5S 1300mah performs very well in my testing. However, it's also huge, heavy and awkward. Make sure your build can support that battery comfortably.

    I just wanna try one.. But at that price I dont think ANYTHING short of 10 min racing times would make it worth it, even the top Racers will probably only get about a couple of those if they're lucky and use them sparingly at best, and I wonder if high voltage technology has anything to do with it if it's more or less a high-voltage battery with a restrictor plate LOL
