Seeing this tonight, and I'm glad to hear you really enjoyed it! As an ex-Mormon who loves seeing Hugh Grant be a villain, I'm quite intrigued.
ooo this should be an interesting experience for you! hope its a good one
I'm also an Ex-Mormon! I'm going to see it in Salt Lake City tomorrow.
As an ex mormon, I loved it SO much. I think a lot of the hate that it gets are coming from people who can't relate to the frustration that those of us who wasted years on the church feel
I really enjoyed this film.
I'm agnostic now and I loved this movie. It landed so perfectly for me. Very intriguing and interesting and suspenseful movie!
Fun fact, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are both Ex-Mormons in real life. Also, one of the directors of the film is married to a Mormon.
Might be soon "was married to a Mormon" and it can go both ways. Or as I am told repeatedly, members now say "a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints" cause abbreviations are out and being a long winded bore not getting to the point is in (if one has ever watched any general conference, that aspect is no surprise) Also..the religious leaders love excommunication.
She said this in the review, did you watch it lol
Maybe that's why she was so somewhat defensive when he kept questioning them.
@@kdcndw1 They love excommunication?! I'm a former Mormon and I've ASKED REPEATEDLY to be excommunicated for the last 25 years and they won't give it to me. I don't know where you're getting your information from.
@@MrSwinefuzzstart asking for reasonable change of the church on a public platform. It will happen.
Hugh Grant going from Heretic to
Paddington In Peru is insane!
Saw it yesterday and can't stop thinking about it. Already in my top 10 of the year!
yay!
Same! It really stays with you. I loved it!
the bangs are banging in this video!
This sounds really good! And we have new owners at our local theater who hopefully (fingers crossed) will be showing more genre stuff. Hope we get this one!
You’ve said 8 for originality but the caption says 7. Very intriguing description, thanks, can’t wait for it to come on VOD. X
just making sure youre listening ;)
@@spookyastronauts listening or watching..? Cus I didn’t hear the 7, i saw it lol
But you heard the 8.
I just saw it and loved it! The slow start didn't bother me at all as I was very much on edge and interested to find out what Grant's character's plan was.
I am absolutely pumped for this film. We cannot ever have enough good religious horror films!
Is it going to be like the wicker man movie 😊
Horror? Lol. Good luck if that's what you're expecting.
Your cinema ceases to amaze me everytime you show it
Never does it cease to amaze me that you never cease to be amazed --- ever.
@MegaJackpinesavage they actually said they do cease to be amazed. So they don't think her cinema is all that impressive I guess.
I watched it in the cinema and there was quite a few elderly in the audience, as the film started some of them walked out after like 15mins into it and some more within the first hour.
Makes me think they maybe thought it's gonna be an old school Hugh Grant movie? I'm not sure.
As for me, i loved the fact that they brought up very challenging questions about religion. Great film.
They may not have liked the stance on religion.
🤣🤣
I literally could not stop thinking about it the whole ride home. I definitely think i need to watch it again to figure out where it lands in my end of year list as well. It will definitely be there somewhere...
THIS is the type of horror I appreciate. The philosophical aspect of it made my brain so happy and kept me on the edge of my seat. I'll probably rewatch again this weekend. Winner in my book!
Is this horror or thriller! I see what you wrote but curious to see with my wife.
@@calebperkins2624 It's very much a psychological horror drama/thriller. I saw it a couple of weekends ago and I really liked it, especially for the writing and the performances!
I watched this with Beck and Woods, Chloe East, and the costume designer over the weekend at Beck and Wood's Last Picture House movie theater. We had blueberry smell-o-vision cards, blueberry themed drinks, etc. It was amazing!!
omg thats amazing!
Ayyy, I'm glad you liked it! This was one I had been thinking about for awhile after seeing it, considering my background. I'm pumped to see it again soon!
Just got back with Dad from the cinema, he's quite hard to please so I'm thrilled that he enjoyed it.
I am so curious about this one. I really cannot imagine Hugh Grant working as any character in a horror movie, but your review gave me hope ♥
After being an oompa lompa anything is possible
He was great in The Undoing, a miniseries where he also plays a surprise villain
A24's Saw. Saw for the religious. Hugh Grant as Wikipedia Jigsaw. I of course really enjoyed it
One of my really good friends growing up was Mormon and he had a large family. I attended several of their services at their church, as well. They were very faithful to their practices and I got some first hand exposure to their religion. They were very strict on certain things. We played a lot of basketball together through his church but he was literally forbidden* to watch or/play sports on Sundays. They would also have family gatherings in their living room nightly with everyone who lived in the home. They definitely had a great sense of togetherness that was palpable.
It was definitely different ,but it was interesting to learn about their “ways” so to speak.
Thanks for this review you made. I watched Heretic today and I think it's the best film I've seen this year. So many surprises and I can't believe I laughed out loud when the topics of Monopoly, Radiohead and Star Wars came up. Keep up the great reviews 👍
I saw it a couple of weekends ago and you echo my sentiments on the film. This has to be a career-best turn by Hugh Grant and the two female leads were also fantastic. It drew me in from the off and I really wanted the protagonists to come out on top. And it certainly spoke to me as someone who is non-religious, I'll just say that 🙂
Just watched it. Slow start and then Buckle up! Tension! Scared! Despair! Trapped! Mind Games! That's the movie. You'll see for yourself. Great 👍
Best Actor for Hugh Grant and Best Actress for Demi Moore 🛐
Nah, Oscar sucks! Maybe Golden Globe nominees
Hello, I was watching dog and wolf videos lately and somehow I remembered that there was this TH-camr who had a dog who got an amputation and was very sick and how sad this TH-camr were. Then I remembered your name was something with Spooky and I found you again.
Religious horror is my absolute favorite sub genre! I was raised in the Catholic Church and let me tell you, it left scars. Thanks for another great spoiler-free review, you are the best ❤ Edit to add: I watch anything that A24 puts out !
You’d love Midnight Mass on Netflix if you haven’t already watched it
The biggest surprise for me is that I went into this movie thinking Hugh Grant was Hugh Laurie. 🤪Anyway I really enjoyed it. Mr. Read's knowledge about board games, Religion and music was for me the best parts of the movie. That last "miracle" kill, jump scare ending was very 80's . Movies like The Mutilator, Graduation Day, The Prowler, Pieces, Carrie Friday The 13th ,and even that new Texas Chainsaw Massacre installment came to mind. I love those kind of endings though so I gave it a solid 9/10
Love all the 80s movies you listed! Yes, the first part of the film was "elevated horror" but then the end did give us some great slasher bits! Magic underwear for the win!!!
Ex LDS married to ex LDS here. Just watched it and I think your description is spot on. Won’t be for everyone (cause of the methodically slow and dialogue heavy start) but it just hit the exact sweet spot for me.
yes i really like these discussions, and hugh grant playing a villain from his standpoint made it interesting.
Right. Plus it was super cool to see his very Hugh Grant specific style of monologue delivery and his transition from charming to sinister. I totally get why he took this role. I think very few people could have pulled it off properly and he just knocked it out
I watched Heretic today and I'm glad I did. I thought the religious "question everything" theme was well played out.
I'm really sorry! This is my first time on your channel and I haven't seen the movie yet, but I absolutely love Brian Wood's work and of course Hugh Grant is just incredible. But from the moment I saw you, I couldn't stop thinking, "Oh my goodness, she looks just like Hermione Granger!" I was so excited and a little starstruck!
I'm very curious about this film and hearing your thoughts on it, it kinda reminded me of The Sunset Limited, one my favorite films ever. It's not a horror film, it's a drama, but the set up about a philosophical confrontation on the topic of religion in a very enclosed space is quite similar.
You never steer us wrong!!! I'll definitely be going this weekend now!!!
I want to see terrifer 3😊
I hope you enjoy it! its a bit slow keep that in mind!
@@spookyastronauts I love the slow burn dread filled tension!!!
I really enjoyed this film! All of the philosophical talk and all of the twists and turns were great.
Just saw this and am blown away! SO good!
There is such an interesting shot that is shown between the two doors (if you watched you’ll know what I mean) and I believe there is a really fantastic hidden meaning to that shot. Keep your eye on the trim of the room!
Incredible film
I really enjoyed this one, Emma. It's an different and interesting take on religion, especially religion in horror and Hugh Grant was great in his role. Chole East had the best growth in the film and I love the back and forth Sophie Thatcher had with Hugh Grant as well.
Okay I know it said "palace cinema" (2:51) but like my mind for a split second read placenta cinema. My brain is truly horror filled.
i saw it last night and it made me scream im not joking the tension was that high
That candle shot though. And Hugh Grant was the most Hugh Grant in the most sinister way.
My mom, my husband, and I went to see Heretic today, and we all loved it! We need a video of your thoughts with spoilers. There's just so much to chew on in this one. It's rare that we go to the movies anymore, but this one was definitely worth it.
Thanks for the review, Emma. I'll be seeing the film this weekend. I was already hooked on the idea of Hugh Grant playing a villain.
Shot in British Columbia too! I liked it a lot, because it brought psychological horror to my thoughts on religion.
Where the movie shined for me was their conversation before they start moving more into the house. I enjoyed this one and felt uncomfortable and even tense during some moments. I hope A24 does a collab with Yankee Candle or something for a blueberry pie candle because I would buy it 😂. Always appreciate your thoughts!
i showed the candle at the start they are selling!
Saw this last night and was riveted the entire film. A real standout. Wicked, smart film, not what I imagined would be happening. All three actors did a wonderful job.
I live in Utah. It will be awesome to go see a movie that is picketed. That hasn't happened for over 30 years. The last time I remember was The Last Temptation Of Christ.
voted for trump?....oh dear
I live in Utah too and I'm lds and me nor anyone I know have boycotted it. If anything everyone I know has loved it.
@michaelaldan6969 Movie was a fun creepy exhilarating ride. And no fiiing way I voted for Trump..think tangerine mussoulini is an extestential threat to the world and don't care if a majority of Americans who did cast a ballot voted for him.
The film isn't really anti=Mormon - the two girls are very sympathetically presented, and Grant's character would have said the same to people from any religion.
Saw it tonight and gave it a high 8/10 for myself. While the final act did start to stretch plausibility, if not credulity, the slow building of tension, cold atmosphere, and great performances all-round kept me riveted. Certainly a film that will lend itself to further discourse.
I have now viewed "Heretic" four times, and as I write this I'm sniffing my official A24 Heretic Blueberry Pie Candle. I liked your review so much that I subscribed. By-the-way, to my ear you have a mid-Atlantic accent.

I really enjoyed the story to the film has a real feel of taking steps in life I do agree some parts were really slow but wasn't a bad film
Can’t wait for your review of the substance. For me, this hits top 3-5 in body horror movies…
the last 25 mins was crazy
I finally saw it last night. I am going to watch it again tonight. I loved it!
I'll never go to Hugh Grant's house but I'll gladly watch his movies and this was a fantastic ride of a movie.
I really wanna see this movie!! I've loved Hugh Grant since Bridget Jones
The trailer piqued my interest, but this review has my attention. 😀
Tangent: I couldn't tell you how many times we had Mormons or JWs come to our door growing up, no matter how many times we turned them away. One woman even just waltzed into my house while I was playing video games and left her pamphlets with me, asking if she could use the toilet before she left. Being too stunned (and hyper-focused on MK 3), I said okay and had to laugh about it later. Makes the plot of this movie more intriguing to me.
Excited to see it this weekend! Also, you pronounced heretic beautifully
haha thanks liz!
My friend and I are going to see this on Sunday. Hugh Grant in a villainous role in a religious horror film? Yes please!
I love religious horror and I love A24! I’ve never seen Hugh Grant do horror, so this will be interesting! I’m set to go see it this weekend! I’ve had a post-it note with the word “Heretic - Nov 8” on my computer for weeks!
I hope you enjoy it! its very slow at the start just keep that in mind!
The Heretic is a good movie. After I saw it for the first time. I was like in shock. What did I see? I really did like it. The cast was good. It did make me think. The basement was the worst part. Meaning the scary part. Wait a go A24. Good job. I'm new to your channel. I like it. Sounds like you found the movie interesting. It was a cat and mouse game. Hugh Grant was great as Mr Reed. Chloe and Sophie were great as the missionaries. The one true religion. Blueberry pie candle. It was a huge surprise.
This is perfect timing since I’m going to see it tonight thanks to the advanced screening in Australia. I’m really curious about this one, it’s a different take on religious horror and I relieved that the trailers have been so vague, maybe they’ve finally learnt how to make trailers that don’t spoil the entire film
I loved this movie , loved the dialogue and particularly loved Chloe East !!
At last! I hardly could anticipate you reviewing this film. Thank you!
Saw it last night and completely loved it. Thank you for recommending it!!!
Beck/Woods are local heroes. I met them at a Monster Fest right after "A Quiet Place" came out. Cool regular guys.
I have been looking forward to seeing this. Glad to hear that you really liked it!
Taking 2 of my friends to see this tomorrow evening!! We love religious horror especially since we grew up in religious households. This kind of horror always affects me more for those reasons. Can’t wait🤩🛐
Nosferatu is also gonna be released January 1st where i am😢 its so upsetting
Barbarian + Martyrs + Frailty =
act 1: awesome
act 2: not bad
act 3: Piss off
Nice to see someone mention Frailty, I thought it was 10 Cloverfield Lane mixed with that. I wonder whether Sister Paxton was a little nod to Bill Paxton.
I thought of Black Phone, but I can see Martyrs and Barbarian as well.
It has been done before in the original Martyrs. Testing and studying people while keeping them barely alive to see if they see the light and crossover and then killing them . Pretty much what martyrs was about. Seeing if heaven and god was real.
Haven't see Martyrs but i am pretty sure it is alot more violent than this and hasn't got an hour of someone talking about religion.
😊😊😊😊sounds interesting Emma
I already like thos two girls from the trailer... And now im scare for what can happen to them 😮
I love me some religous horror! Cant wait to see this at the weekend!!
You should check out First Reformed as well.
I was raised Mormon, and this movie did NO research. The sister missionaries barely dress the part and don't carry scriptures like they would IRL. A male elder missionary is often alone in this movie, which would never be the case. Etc. And the arguments were SO BASIC. I liked the first half, and then it got so dumb when it became a nonsensical MARTYRS that felt to me written by AI. What I liked best was when it was about two people having to remain friendly with a predator. That part was unusual. For me, this was ultimately unsatisying.
I liked it, but the second half is considerably weaker than the first. Nice to see some Radiohead-references though.
As a fellow ex-mormon, I imagine this is a movie that will either be an interesting watch or a triggering watch. Or maybe both. Either way, I'm excited to check it out.
I'm seeing it next week and I cannot wait!!!
Hoping to see this tomorrow.
I saw it last night and I really enjoyed it, I had a bit of a slower reaction to the film and needed to sit and think about it before deciding if I liked it or not, as someone who grew up in the Catholic Church but now practice a more spiritual practice this film gave me a little bit of a religious identity crisis 😂😅 Hugh grant was so amazing and still as charming as ever, Chloe and Sophie were amazing too and I am keen to re watch it,
The monopoly comparisons were peak writing. It really got me thinking. Though the mansplaining was also terrifying 😂😅
why would it give u crisis? the critique was aimed at organised religions and dogmas as means of control.. it wasn't attacking being spiritual as such which is a different thing altogether, in fact u can read the ending as saying that we need it to keep us going in a horrific and hopeless reality..
@ everyone gets affected by films differently, for me personally I was raised Catholic but then my dad took us out and raised us "born again" which is a very toxic spin off of Christianity that he was drawn towards to justify his divorce. I then left organise religion all together and focused on a more spiritual new age practice which my parents still condemn me for, then I felt called back to Catholicism so I went back to church but it still didn't feel right and then I just felt lost in my faith and I think having all the questioning and monologues in this film really connected to how I feel deep down, I have a lot of religious trauma too from being raised with misogynistic and harmful teachings because I'm a woman.
For the true Mormon experience we need an A24 Adaptation of Brian Evanson's novel "Las days"
I love A24!!!! They're the best in the genre of horror. Some of my favorite directors in horror are Mike Flannigan and Jeniffer Kent.
Glad we like it 😊
I'm very excited to see this. I'm sure audience score will be a lot lower since most of them are accustomed to "popcorn" horror. OR I could be wrong.
seeing this tonight, very excited!
hope you like it!
I love your channel, just wanted to say that.
thank you!
That one split second at the beginning where I thought you were going to say this is the last of your channel or something😭😭
It's been a rough two days in the States and I'm a bit on edge, to say the least.
I haven't seen it yet but want too badly. Does it have something to do with Dantes inferno?
it touches on it for sure, but more in its theming
I am seeing this movie this weekend with a friend. Should be a good time. I’ve had a crush on Hugh Grant my whole life.
Just saw. Good but it might have been a bit tp philosophical for me. You were certainly right about Chloe East being the scene stealer. I liked it though, but i think i should've waited for streaming. Was frustrating in sorts. 8/10 i liked it but it was something i wasn't ready for in any way.
I think it is worth seeing it at the cinema.
Cant wait to see this - I'm seeing it Monday cause we got plans this weekend. :( But its a belated Birthday movie. :D
Can you recommend some other good religious horror films comparable to this movie? Many thanks!
Martyrs is an obvious comparison.. the director even described its themes as deeply Catholic..
@@mostlydead3261 I'll check it out, thank you!
I've read elsewhere that Sophie Thatcher was raised Mormon, but I haven't seen anything indicating Chloe East was.
What I read said both of them
I was a missionary in Australia. Never ran into anybody as crazy as this. But we did have some people that tried to fight us a few times. 😄
Ty for your service!
I remember hiding from Jehovahs when I was a kid, my mother & I would hide behind the long & keep quiet until they left
She was a nice woman & it was hard for her to say no to people
This isnt set in australia haha
@@spookyastronauts I know that 😁. But you live in Australia.
That’s fair, I would try to fight a missionary if they showed up at my door
I recently watched Megan is Missing and expected Heretic to be disturbing for similar reasons, but it actually wasn't that scary imho. I think Heretic asked for too much suspension of disbelief and wasn't as twisty and/or revelatory as it needed to be to pull off the premise. The dungeon in Barbarian, by comparison, felt more believable and organic to the world it resided in. At the end of the day, I just didn't really understand why Hugh's character felt so strongly about religion that he went through all the trouble he did. It's not a totally bad watch, but I feel like I was misled by all the hype. Part of the problem is that there's been so many other great horror films recently.
Okay, so I saw Heretic over the weekend, and it was a mixed bag for me. I loved the first half of the film, very psychological. The acting was first-rate by all three leads. There was a time or two that I thought Hugh Grant might have been channeling Michael Caine, at least in his voice delivery. I appreciate the story that the film was trying to convey and as a person of faith, I found nothing offensive in the film. The villain's motivations are all his own.
I guess I felt that the second half of the film did go a little overboard with some shock value that wasn't there in the first half. I would still recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good dark, twisty thriller and I did get caught off-guard by a couple of the twists. Overall, I gave it a 6/10 and that's mainly for some of the more disgusting elements in the second half. Hope this review was vague enough, because I still hope people who love old-school thrillers will see it.
I saw this movie last night and I loved it so much happened I’d definitely rewatch it i think most likely it’ll be on MAX tho
Genuine question.
I'm a former atheist been walking in faith the last 3 years Christian specifically feel fairly strong within my faith,
but I do love horror always have and honestly feel no conviction towards horror movies.
Loved terrifier 3, the imagery at the ending didn't really bother me.
I'm curious about this movie and thinking of watching it.
Should Christian be okay to watch this or is this a nihilistic film Martyrs?
Well, it definitely questions alot about religion but if you're confident within yourself, then probably it's fine. That being said I'm an atheist, so maybe it's easier said than done.
45min to showtime i’m much more excited now!!
I absolutely loved this film. Acting was top notch, there was humor, the flow of the dialog was almost Tarantino-esque (I really enjoyed it and sometimes had the feeling of wanting to partake in the converation). Do have to say that I liked the first part of the film more than the second, but to me it was a very strong 7,5/8 out of 10.
It wasn't even scary.
im going to see it after school today im so intrigued
just got back and it was so good mg, so funny and fascinating (i wrote a longer review on commonsensemedia) :)
I’m apart of the LDS church n I’m hyped asf to watch this
Curious to hear what you think and your interpretations! hope you like it.
you have a doppelganger in lauren mayberry. You two look similar to me
just viewed your review: Maybe hugh caught the "bad guy" bug after paddington. This is interesting, I may check it out (not in theatres). I know some former mormons that are grappling with the religion and I wish they wouldn't just give up on Christianity. Its interesting you like this, I'll try and keep it in mind and I'll check to see if its available to view via stream or something.
I thought Chloe East was the best too. Hugh has been getting all the publicity in the Uk for this film but to me, although he's great, it belongs to the two female leads.
I cannot wait to see this movie!!
