It is the only temple dedicated to Mahakaal specifically ( Mahakaal translated to " one who is beyond time, he who existed before the past and he who will exist after the future"). Of all Gods Shiva is the most simple hearted and all-forgiving.

The chariot you saw wasn't Shri Krishna and Arjun. God Brahma himself was sarthi and God Narayan was the arrow, riding it was mahadev, destroying tripur. Which used to be three different places where demons lived at that time and we're creating problems for devtas. Because mahadev destroyed tripur, he's also known as Tripuraari

There is a detailed video on it when a news channel was covering it just before the inauguration by PM Modi. In that video the developer explained everything and they also showed the night view which was magnificent. Each idol/statue/spot also has QR codes which can be scanned to explain in detail about the story of that idol/event. You should watch that video.

The chariot you saw wasn't Shri Krishna and Arjun. God Brahma himself was sarthi and God Narayan was the arrow, riding it was mahadev, destroying tripur. Which used to be three different places where demons lived at that time and we're creating problems for devtas. Because mahadev destroyed tripur, he's also known as Tripuraari
Indeed Mahakaleshwar is the most powerful Shiva Linga I have been to hundreds of Shiva Temple including 9 jyotirlinga but the energy vibrations power I felt in Mahakaleshwar is short to explain in words you can literally feel Shiva near you ❤

Mahakaal temple is an ancient and highly powerful temple of Shiva. If you’re chakras are sensitive, you can feel the energy of the lingam. It’s terrifying yet liberating as it is the energy of Shiva in its raw form. It shakes you and breaks all your perceptions which you have about yourself (your ego) and the beliefs which you might hold. It’s like staring into the eye of truth. It’s scary as hell. Not for everyone, as it is the truth as viewed from the point of Mahakaal. So what truth does Mahakaal represents which is so terrifying. Let’s understand.
Mahakaal means the destroyer of time. Time is the most powerful weapon. In this temple, the aspect of Shiva where he destroys time is worshipped. Time destroys everything. It destroys living beings by death. It destroys planets, galaxies and the whole universe. Who can thus be saved from time ? It’s none other than Mahakaal. Shiva who is unaffected by time as he is beyond it. It is Shiva who destroys time. Time is ever flowing. It does not stop. Time constantly causes change and change is scary for a ordinary living being as all beings are comfortable in their own bubble. Time pops the bubble. That’s why people of scared of it. Time even consumed the mortal bodies of Krishna,Rama, Jesus, Buddha, Mahavira and many great sages.
Interesting to note is that, the experience is diametrically opposite to what you’ll feel in an ancient temple of Krishna/Vishnu/Narayana where you’ll feel the power of unbridled love, pure goodness and untainted devotion. Though it is to be understood that it’s not a comparison of one vs the other. Both these aspects ie. the terrifying truth and unbridled love are just faces of the divine truth. One is not better than the other and one should not be startled by any. (this is also one of the core messages of the Bhagvad Gita ie. to remain calm and focussed in good and bad times, in fear and in joy)
Having spoken about the philosophical aspect of time and Mahakaal. Let me tell you about the temple, it’s relevance and some interesting facts on it.
Mahakaal temple in Ujjain is one of the 12 jyotirlingams. This temple is of immense importance in tantric traditions. As it is highly powerful and helps people to accelerate their spiritual process. Some people use it in positive light and some in negative. Not just in tantric traditions, but the temple has importance in various other traditions. The reason why it is popular in tantric traditions is because it is a powerhouse of raw energy of Shiva.
In earlier times, ash from the cremation ground was used in the temple for worshipping the lingam. Reason being that the ash from cremation ground was considered as a symbol of the most terrifying truth which is- all that is born must die (which also aligns with the Mahakaal aspect of Shiva as explained above).Now, they don’t use the ash from the cremation ground.
The energy of the temple fills you with humility. Some of the people that I know have felt the energy and some became terrified as it broke their mental bubble. Some were shaken for a month 😂😂.But there’s one thing which was common among these people. They made immense spiritual progress after their experience as this raw/unbridled energy of Shiva cleansed them of the greatest evil ie. the ego and false mind (as they experienced the death of their ego and false mind). Having said this, not everyone has this experience, a select few spiritually inclined people do.

Yes that was Raavana's statue depicting the incident when Raavana tried to lift the Kailash parbat and Lord Shiva crushed his hands only by pressing his foot thumb on ground. To atone for his deed Raavana created & sung Tandava stotrum. And that's how Shiv Tandav Stotram came to reality.

I have gone there 12 Year's before & I warship to shiva and around the shivling and touched linga that time I feeling so great price in m soul. Due to shiva this is possible. Because I want go to shirdi where there is sai baba temple at naisk. But at the last moment I have dished that I should go to mahakal Ujjain because bhole baba was calling me. Ujjain is one of the most ancient cities , mahakal is a fierce representation of shiva everyday he bathes in humanash also he is regarded as the king of ujjain also there are thousands of ancient temple in this city another famous being ‘kalabhairava ‘ : the idol drinks alcohol here no one knows how even the scientists couldn’t figure out !! Kalabhairava is the commander or bodyguard of lord shiva he is also an avatar or manifestation of shiva himself !
