  • June 23 (Bloomberg) --- For over 60 years, the U.S. Navy Southern Command was located at an airbase in Puerto Rico known as Roosevelt Roads. But in 2004 the Navy moved out, costing the island thousands of jobs and millions in revenue. The site has sat mostly idle for a decade -- but now the redevelopment of Roosevelt Roads seems finally poised to get off the ground. Bloomberg's Stephanie Ruhle reports. (Source: Bloomberg)

My husband was an airman there from 1979-1983. My children were born there, raised there, we made it home. Neighbors lived in harmony and peace The base grounds and buildings were pristine and well maintained. It's a shame to see it in the condition it is now...makes me cry.

I was stationed there and in Vieques from 91 to 94 best duty station I ever had. Sad to see in such decay and now the vultures are coming in to divide and conquer something that the Navy should have never closed

There is NO Vision, There is no commitment, and worst of all there is no interest any more. Why? Because there is nothing to gain from it any more. Not for Ceibeños any way. Imagine what will happen if we separated from the US. There is your example Look At Roosevelt Roads. That is just a prototype Of A Puerto Rico without the US.

I was stationed there in 1988-1989 at the Marine corps barrack's and this just sadden's me to see what's become of Roosevelt Roads. I would hate to go back there to re-visit the base because I would probably fall down and cry!!

If Israeli armed forces strike American ships and kill American sailors in international waters, you are not allowed to retaliate against Israeli forces. Our president will call the retaliation forces back. The president will not publically acknowledge that the attack took place. The news media will NOT cover the story in the evening news and Hollywood will not make any movies about the incident. The American public will never know it happened. So, dodge all future shots from Israel, stay safe and quiet.

Turn it into a Retirement Home for US Servicemen and Servicewomen. They have a great place to retire and Puerto Rico gets some great people and all that money that won't go to Florida.

One reason the base moved to Mayport Fl was PIP / Jessy Jackson and the likes 1:12 protesting the base and especially Vieques bombardment range . I was stationed at the base. 72-76

All the folks who were doing the demonstrations, and forced the Navy out the island are nowhere to be found. You need a plan in place to be able to absorb a military base. Now the installation sits in ruins, and all the promises from the local government about jobs and opportunities once the Navy returned the land are just like the base today, empty.

Best comment! So true. You can't trust the govt of pr to do right. All talk and no action....unless it's stealing money... Ceiba is a disaster. It was probably more economically prosperous than Fajardo when RR was open. Now it's a mess.

So you’re saying the Navy was forced to leave and the people screwed themselves over. Cause that’s what happened. The Navy didn’t just up and go..

:22 "When the Navy abandoned the base 10 years ago..." Don't you mean when the PR Government kicked the Navy out? If any of the locals are looking for someone to blame for the lost economy, they should blame their own elected officials. My family was there for 3 years, from 2001-2004, right at the closing of the base. As it began to shut down many locals would approach my dad and ask "What am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to feed my family?"
Hopefully they build something here that benefits the local Puerto Ricans of Ceiba and doesn't just line the pockets of a few investors.

NO it isn't anybody's "both" faults. This is on the leftist garbage that all too many PR people put up with, because as it always does, it promised them something for nothing and they fell for it.

First and foremost, thank the people who protest back in 99 after the david sanes tragic incident, thank the pr government pnp ppd and most of all ruben berrios from pip, who got away with the idea of getting the US NAVY out of vieques, and Ceiba Roosevelt Roads. Intead of leaving vieques to the us armed forces since its been contaminated for centuries, and should not be habitated. Sad to say now pr dont have the air defenses like before no more 300 millions for the RR base AND NO MORE HELP FROM THE US NAVY WHEN HURRICANES HIT THE ISLAND. Also no more logistic support in case of an emergency. The PRNG Can not defend the island alone since their f16 planes are gone and naval station gone, now pr depends on florida ng or reserve in order to recieve air support. PRNG mission has change since 2004 from combat to support mission on the ANG SIDE. And the us army reserve their mission is not combat either but support. A couple.of uh60 wont cutt it neither the lakota u72. Thanks to all.politicians from pr who never had a plan when the navy left. Shame on you pr politicians, pnp ppd and most of all PIP.
