    One thing to add. Companies in the Netherlands most of the time give a yearly contract and your working visa and residence permit will depend on that contract. After 2 contracts for 2 years company must either let you go or give a permanent contract required by law, which automatically gives you a residence permit validity for 5 years

    • @TheTravellingFoxes
      @TheTravellingFoxes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oohhh that's right! Forgot about the 1yr contract. Expats in new companies usually stress about the end of their contract as they're unsure if the employer will extend them or not.

  • @dutchyjhome

    Once you have decided to live in another country, especially in a country on the other side of the world, you will go through all the steps of grieving: you say goodbye to family, friends and everything you are emotionally attached to in your original country.
    And don't underestimate it; this farewell can be compared with saying goodbye to someone who has fallen away from you.
    In addition, the home country and the conditions in the home country as you left it will not be the home country and the conditions in which you will find the it after years abroad for 2 reasons:
    1. Your home country and the people who live there (family and friends) is/are subject to constant changes and evolution's, however small as they can be which you hardly notice when you live there, but all together most likely will provide you a completely different experience of your home country and that this is the reason that after years of absence your home country does no longer feel like your home country and your friends and even family the way you left it/them.
    2. Like it or not, you'll still get used (socially, politically, climate-technically and more) to the host country where you stay for a number of years and this habituation changes your perspective with regard to many things to your homeland. Being critical in your home country with regard to matters that you previously never would have discussed in your home country will therefore occur more often than you would like. And you simply cannot have both; you will have to make choices. Structural choices that give you a future in your country of choice. By choosing a certain country, you distance yourself and say goodbye to the other country, including the people who live there, and you welcome the new country, the new language and the new culture and the new norms and values and the people who live there just like yourself.
    Even if you would fully accept the host country or new country and you would fully integrate into this new country with the new language and the new culture and the new norms and values, you still will go through the complete grieving process of parting with regard to the old country. It is absolutely not possible to keep everything you had in the old country without hindering your integration in the new country. This really is a Black or White situation, you've gotta choose...so it's all about choices unfortunately. You simply can't have both. The grieving process is inevitable, but don't go into the grieving process without giving yourself a real chance of success in the host country or perhaps during permanent immigration; the new country.
    These are unfortunately the facts as they are. I wish you wisdom at your choices.

    NIce blog and very informative. My school friend works for Philips based in Eidhoven and I have been trying to come to Netherlands for work since 2017 got few interview calls even, but I guess they went ahead with local available candidates even though interview was kind of good. Based on this, I have now decided I would be coming to Netherlands on visiting family/friends visa (Short Term) and then look out for jobs. Will that be a good move as I have 10.6 years of IT experience from MNC companies like TCS and Accenture.

    Your career path reminds me so much of living in San Francisco and being engineer #11 at Zendesk and other similar experiences. It's all the same. We just go to tech startup offices and drink expensive hipster coffee.
    Your English is really good. You don't have any of the common grammatical issues that I sometimes heard from my Filipino coworkers in San Francisco who had lived in the US for many years. (E.g. "that one" instead of "that".)

    Hi Natasha, love your video! I ‘m Dutch and worked 0,8 fte even before my daughter was born, to have a good work-life balance. I could afford this, even though I spent more money om my free days, while earning less! Now, I work 0,7 fte & my husband 0,8 fte.
    Many Dutch employees decrease their working hours when their children are in primary school; women more than men. Employers are required by law to accept a wish to work less.

      When my kids were little, I had to work such long hours, that when my kids eventually saw me, they kept calling me Daddy. It broke my heart. I was an engineer in a factory in South Africa.

    • @TheTravellingFoxes
      @TheTravellingFoxes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very interesting, thanks for sharing! In the Philippines, you usually need to hire a nanny to be able to work and have someone take care of your child. It's much nicer here to have kids so I can spend more time with them 😃

    • @andriipashen
      @andriipashen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the move in the right direction and how it should eventually be in all countries.
      Working 40h per week is far and away from achieving work-life balance.
      There's just the issue of money. But if you can afford that why not to make yourself and your children happier and healthier. It destroys the risk of burnouts because you always have time to regain your mental and physical state.
      When I worked full-time I had to leave my job for 6 months because I was sick and tired of not being able
      to find time to fulfill my dreams and goals. During those 6 months I managed to do a lot.
      Then I worked 4h per day and I won't lie if I say that my performance was >= 6h.
      So for employers this is also not a bad thing.

I know its a very subjective question, but maybe you know a range for people with around 30 years of age and 4 years of previous experience at working in a specific field (mine is logistics -supply chain (for example DHL, FEDEX)).

Not really an expert on salary and the industry (logistics) itself, but maybe you can check out sites like IAmExpat.nl (www.iamexpat.nl/career/working-in-the-netherlands/salary-payslip-dutch-minimum-wage). Regarding getting a job after your Masters, totally depends what companies you're looking at (that aren't affected by COVID) and of course your experience! My inkling is if you'll get into a competitive program, they might help you with recruitment :) Good luck!!

      There are also astonishly regional differences in that small country. If you work for Vodafone in Amsterdam or the same Vodafone in Maastricht, the locals have a very different way of life which reflects on the atmosphere. Maastricht is extremely laissez-faire. Amsterdam and nearby Utrecht are just the other way around, much more organized, punctual and strict.

      Hello Carlo! You can definitely try to find a job before moving... especially now everything is remote and digital. It will also depend on your work and company if it's possible to transfer you here :)

    Vacation pay, "vakantiegeld" is 13% on top of your annual salary. Fabulous.

    • @dutchman7623
      @dutchman7623 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a reservation of your own money, used to be payed in may, now on request. It is 8% of your salary and builds up with every month you worked. You need to take it at least once a year or else it will be automatically added to your pay in december.
      Next to it there is a variable pay in your reservations depending on how well your business is doing.
      Those (in this case 5%) are also payed on request for personal use, also at least once a year, and before 31st dec.
