Now that we've connected the equipment in the last video, I can prepare for the sequence, start it, look at the automated Meridian Flip, and see how a sequence ends. Later videos will include going deeper into the settings of N.I.N.A. as well as processing workflows.

Hello Cuiv, I've been avoiding a change from APT to NINA for about a year. NINA seemed daunting. You have made it much easier. I've watched every one of your NINA videos two or three times. Autofocus ran perfectly. I have a sequence running as i write this. Thank you so much for taking the time. I'll never look back 😁

I use NINA and love it and I never tried the FILE option in the framing tool. "AWESOME". I just saw your video post in the facebook NINA group. We're GROWING FAST.

Got a present of a guide scope and camera, so starting to Guide after just using mount and intervalometer. I was really apprehensive until watching this video. But I know Im going to watch it over and over and over and over again, take notes and put everything in order for the next time I have clear skies. Thanks for putting these together.
Have always used APT to image but thought I would give NINA a go after finding your video on You tube. Followed your tutorial and wow what a piece of software, I love the auto focus option which APT has yet to offer. APT is still a fab piece of software but I may continue with NINA to get more proficient. Thanks for the awesome videos.

I am transitioning from SGPro to N.I.N.A. I configured it following the excellent help guide that is available online, but there were a few things that I wasn't sure I was doing correctly. Your N.I.N.A video tutorials were exactly what I needed to find the answers I was looking for. Thanks you very much for taking the time to do this. I know it is a lot of work!!!

I’ve been imaging for over 20 years going through a number of SBIG cameras. I have a QHY 268M with cfw and oag ordered. Always used maxim and Sky pro for my tools. I have a c9.25 on a g11 Gemini 2 with an Ovision worm. Camera should show up in a month or so. Thanks for the videos. Been studying them carefully. These are really good.

It is a really nice program. I have recently used it but it works well. The only thing that signals me at times is the tendency to lose the connection with the telescope. I use the EQmod cable. Phd2 guide the mount.
Great Nina videos. Please cover how to setup a sequence that pauses when clouds roll in and resumes when conditions improve. thanks.
awesome videos mate, NINA does look like an awesome program, but i think its quite a learning curve. Im looking forward to more in depth tutorial videos on this program, Would be great to see some videos on each of the options and how they work.. Keep up the awesome work!

Another great video thanks. One thing I like to do when setting up my imaging sequences in my current tool (APT) is try out different exposure lengths, view the image on screen and play around with the histogram to stretch the image to examine the details. I can't find a way of doing that. Is there something in NINA allows you to manually stretch the histogram (I know there are a couple of stretch numbers but that's hardly intuitive or user friendly).

This is such a great tutorial. I'm just about to pull the trigger on NINA and I am wondering if any of your recommendations have changed since your original post. Specifically, have you moved to any of the later software versions since yoour original recommendations? Would feebly appreciate you latest suggestions.
Hi Cuiv…I’m edging my way from pure EAA into some fumbling attempts with AP lite and these NINA videos are super helpful, but I long for a step by step tutorial on setting up the various NINA screen layouts. I’d also really welcome seeing your process for setting up the Zwo EAF from scratch in NINA - including filter offset determinations. I’ve done my best to determine the backlash when moving both in and out, but find I get different backlash measurement results depending on where I start when I’m taking backlash measurements, eg., at 3000 steps versus 6000 steps, I get about 50-60 more steps of backlash. Anyway, I very much appreciate your contributions to the observing community and my own ongoing struggle to get better. cheers, Gary

Hi Cuiv. Thank you for the links. I believe I have watched many of those before and they are really excellent ‘demonstrations’ of what you’re doing but I am hoping to find some ‘tutorials’ that go over the process a bit more slowly and show the specific steps in fine-tuning the visual screen layout or inputing all the focuser settings. I’ll go through them a few more times and it will probably all come together more clearly.
The 50-60 steps I mentioned, is the ‘difference’ in backlash. My outgoing backlash is about 115…it’s not totally consistent when I do sequential measurements. But the backlash increases by 50-60 steps if I take the measurement at a position of 6000 versus if I take it at 3000. So, if I measure outward backlash starting at 3000, I get about 115. If I start at 6000, I get closer to 170. Not sure how I can I set any backlash compensation when it varies depending on where the focuser starts? Cheers! Gary
Thanks for this fantastic video. I am not new to astro photography having used a SharpStar harmonic drive mount and the ASIAIR+ for some time. I am now changing my system to include a Senso Sesto 2 autofocuser. To do this I will purchase a PLL Eagle4 unit to control everything. My question is what software do you have loaded. I'm seeing NINA and Sharpcap for polar alignment. What is ASTAP for and are there any other programs I should use, please?
Thanks for this great video. I have a question about the "Image Options". Should the settings you suggest for "Debayer Image" etc. be used. when shooting Dark Frames. Don't we want to used un-debayered frames to make a master dark that gets applied to an un-debayered light frame? This is my first attempt to use a OSC for deep-sky image processing, I am a little confused.
Just watched your video and nina looks great. I have been using sgp for some time and still learning it . I have downloaded Nina and tried it out but have to really start to learn it I am lost ... But it looks like it does the job , cant believe it is a free program . So now I will going into the observatory when it clears and run your video while I try nina

Hey Cuiv, I've started using Nina thanks to your brilliant tutorials. I have a question regarding live view.
I'm still using a Canon DSLR, without an auto focuser. (I usually use the Canon Eos suite and use the step controls in live view to focus my lens).
Live view in Nina seems to be displayed in very low resolution, so low that the spikes from the bahtinov mask are occupying only a few pixles and become indiscrete. I know I could take some short exposures to get the full resolution, but old habits die hard and I like my live view (especially if I have to focus by hand, as Nina can't natively command my lens).
So two questions before I have to adapt:
Does live view on your dedicated astro cams work well?
Does live view on your DSLR work well? / equivalent to what Eos suite would display? (I seem to remember you have one, sorry if I'm mistaken!)

Cuiv, Great series and Thank You! I do have a minor problem with your inset window. I can't see what is behind it, so in some instances, it leaves me flying blind. I'm trying to work out what I think is a camera problem. My N.I.N.A. is the latest, but can't seem to run my Atik Infinity. Although it does see it, I get error messages. I think I need a "real" Astro Camera. LOL! Thanks for the series!

Hi ,thank you for all the help you provide , i was out tonight ,everything setup ready to go ,sequence was ready but when i clicked the start sequence button an error window it said "Executable not found" i was stumped because i dont know what that is or how to fix it , any help would be appreciated ,thank you again
Hi Cuiv. I am testing out NINA as a possible replacement for APT. I have had one serious imaging session and all went fine until the sequence ended. I had checked the park mount option. The mount, a Celestron CGX controlled via CPWI (direct USB no handset) "parked" at the position when the sequence ended. I was expecting the mount to return to home at the pole and then stop. Luckily I oversaw the whole sequence for the first usage so was able to manually intervene and park the mount properly.
In Celestron's literature they define Park as mode where the position of the mount is saved and this position can be used again as a start point at the next power up assuming the mount has not been disturbed in the meantime. They use Home to refer positioning the mount to the pole or some user defined position programed from the handset and a further third mode Stop mount which stops tracking mode. So it would seem stopping the mount at the correct position is a multi step process. Slew to defined position, stop Tracking and optionally store final position. Any ideas on how to do this in NINA's sequence end routine? Cheers Rob
So I can't speak about Celestron - I know there are other users with Celestron mounts on the NINA Discord, so you may want to ask there. However, I happen to be the one who coded the park at sequence end, so I can tell you the logic:
- If the telescope reports that it can park AND the park position can be user-defined, the process trusts that the park position of the mount has been properly set, and just sends the Park command to the mount - the mount does the rest (e.g. NINA trusts the mount and is dumb). I think it is likely this is your situation.
- If the position reports it can park but that the position can't be defined by the user, the scope will first point to the pole (well, almost, RA is slightly offset as a workaround to some mounts which behave weirdly near the pole) and then park
- If the telescope reports it cannot part (or doesn't report anything), it will slew to the pole (almost), and then send the "stop tracking" command to the mount.
Probably best to double check with other Celestron mount users on Discord! I personally have only owned one Celestron mount (the AVX) and I did not use it for DSO imaging...

It's just in the NINA code, it is run automatically. In the NINA 2.0 Beta with the Advanced Sequencer, it's a bit different though!

After the flip with the newtonian scope. Wouldn't that change the star spikes direction as well?

It appears automatically at the time of the flip, if the flip is enabled - it's really a progress bar rather than a tool bar
For Astrometry dot Net you need an internet connection which I do not have in my observatories as they are too far from the house.....so what are my backup options? Repeat ASTAP?
Im in Bortle 9 Central London.... I guess the same settings as for Tokyo re Autostretch and Black Clipping? Thet are automatically set to 0.2 and -2.8 at the moment..
I would advise you to try it indeed. London is just as bad as Tokyo, maybe even worse!! Try 0.15 and -2 maybe? Good luck & Clear Skies!
Why do you do plate solving in SparpCap?
When plate solving, what happens if your image has no stars, such as around Orion or M51?
Hello Quiv, how well does your zwo533 work under your city skies? Using a zwo183mc pro on Redcat form 7-8 skies and wondering if this will work with a skywatcher 8" Quattro p200. I know the pixel size is small but so are all of my galaxies with current set up.
Works excellently for me - including on that 8 Newt inch.
Where are you directing your sequences to be stored?
There is problem with park in NINA. I can slew and center target. But, if it is part of sequence, mount doesn’t move. After start, software is stalled. When sequence is finished, mount (AVX) doesn’t go to park position either. How to set park in NINA or set in CPWI and communicate to NINA?
I see you have the live view option. I do not see that on my NINA. Using ZWO ASI183, What am I not seeing?
I'm interested that you hang a bag of desiccant inside your telegizmos cover. Does this really have any effect when the bottom of the cover is open to the atmosphere?
Made a big difference for me! I checked the dew with and without in the early morning. Even open at the bottom it is still a dome where humid (and thus lighter) air can easily accumulate in the absence of significant wind.

What’s a good medium image stat when imaging using the 533? Mine always seen to be 2000+.
My 533 is typically at 2,500 or 3,000 if I remember correctly (my principle is that it's better to be above optimal exposure time rather than under optimal exposure time - as the optimal exposure time really is a minimum exposure time, and as long as white pixels aren't being clipped, we're fine).
When I tried connecting my telescope through N.I.N.A. everything slewed in reverse. Any idea why that would happen?
Cuiv, I studied your very informative videos, especially the use if the N.I.N.A software. I, however, never get the screen what you show when you hit the Imaging button like in this video at 2:54 minutes. I also never get to show the photo I take with the camera after I start the sequence. How can I see the photo I just took. What am I missing? I cannot seem to find this in your videos. Thanks a lot for your help.
In the options, I think General tab, there is a button to reset the layout of the Imaging tab. I think this would help! Otherwise, I highly recommend asking on the Discord channel of NINA for help! Good luck!

How does this auto focus work? Is there a motor that moves the camera forward and backward to the telescope?
That's exactly it! The actual method differs depending on the telescope and the focuser (sometimes the focuser will move the primary mirror of the telescope back and forth), but that's the principle of it!

Looks like Cuiv used a previous sub. I'm guessing that if you shoot a target for the first time you need to frame it exactly as you'd like. When you shoot on another night and want to continue adding to previous images, you can use a previous reference to ensure your images will stack nicely without large areas which do not overlap.

@@CuivTheLazyGeek now i guide whith 120 mm of internal scope of my ioptron gem45g but I have some problems in the N NE NW region. For example if I shot in Cygnus region not have problems on the stars but if I go in the Cepheus region some time we have elongated stars

In options and then the Imaging tab it asks for the directory where the Sharp Cap sensor analysis resides so it can use that for exposure recommendations. I have Sharp Cap Pro and have run the Sensor analysis tool successfully. I don't seem to be able to find the correct file or directory however to point NINA to for this. Sharp Cap does not seem to say where the custom sensor files are being kept. I found a .CSV file for my sensor on my computer desktop, so I put that in a Sharp Cap folder and pointed NINA to that but it did not acknowledge that file, it said 0 sensor files imported in a message window. I see a large folder in Sharp Cap where they have a sensor library "#.bin" files, but Nina doesn't seem to like that?
I have actually never used that feature, so I can't answer that! You should try asking in the NINA Discord! Sorry...

@@CuivTheLazyGeek I switched the output file to FITS file and that seemed to produce color images for DSS. Thanks!! Now what about offset. My unity gain is at 121 with 150 sec exposure, what would you recommend for the offset?
