I'm glad you have told the truth, about this item. I wasted my money as well. It's just weakness.
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.
Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

Yeah it's funny you mention the boots I had exactly that with my daughter's shoes. I bought cheapish school shoes at her request as she knew we were skint, at the end of August that cost about £24 which she started wearing in September by October the thin 'leather ish' layer had come off and was showing the fabric underneath. I put scuff stuff on them to keep them going till the Black Friday sales in November, by which time they were completely wrecked and only fit for the bin. I bought her a pair of Kickers on sale for £45 or £49 (I can't remember for sure) and they still look almost new near the end of March. The ones that were almost half the price lasted a month and we pushed it to 2. The Kickers have already lasted 4 months and don't look anywhere near worn out. It's probably worth trying to save for the expensive things but it's not easy especially with the price of gardening things

Thanks for the video I put one of these together today from Lidl, I now will not put it up opposite my greenhouse which I (foolishly) was intending to do! I will put it beside the kitchen wall and attach it with masonry screws and ropes, that way it will hopefully be safe for my tomatoes and not crash down onto my greenhouse. You have helped me avoid a major garden disaster lol😂 I am very grateful.

I hear you. I bought mini plastic covered greenhouse from Aldi this weekend and it was a complete waste of money. The poles are coming out and we've had no wind. I'll be lucky to get a month out of it.
I bought 7, and 4 broke after the first season too, one gush of wind..they are so so crap it’s unbelievable..I don’t grow anything heavy on them now, just sweet peas, and beans, but with wood hammered down and tied to the arch for extra support
I made the same mistake, these arches are rubbish. I had a friend come round and he made me an arch out of wood. I have wisteria growing over mine and it has held up. Not only that a tree fell down from the cottage next door and landed on the wooded arch and it did not move.if it had not have been where I put it the tree would have gone through my roof. You could build one yourself. A few posts and some trellises and you would be good to go.

I have 8 of these arches on my allotment, bought them 3 years ago and are doing very well. I did however put supporting stakes down each side of the arches. My arches are 1.5 feet away from each other and each pair are in separate beds. I put 8ft bamboo canes in the middle of the 2 then braced the 2 together with bamboo canes across each wrung on the ladder for 3 wrongs. Do this both sides and they are so sturdy. I have 1 singular one at home, but stacked it on all sides, very sturdy now.

I’ve bought these recently and just put one up! Didn’t see your video but I had the same thought bargain! And great to try the squash this year. Regretting it after seeing how yours have failed. Hope you saved the plant. Frustrating losing a harvest!!

I have a similar arch. My partners late parents had it and had not installed it before they were no longer with us, so my partner passed it to me and I put it up in my back garden. It's been ok for most of the time but when storm Eunice passed a little while ago, it ended up at an angle, because just pushing it into the ground was simply not firm/secure enough. I pushed it back upright but will have to see how things go. I don't wish to cut down the climbers that presently grow up each side.
Maybe you need to knock up a temporary wooden structure to rest the plant/arch remains on until it's finished fruiting, thus avoiding losing the other plants underneath. Afterwards cut up the arch, use as stakes for plants maybe.
Thanks for the warning, I was just looking for some garden arches. I hope you can recycle some of the pieces for other garden projects - what a shame after all your hard work.

Agree on the value, though we've got a really similar one that's been in our garden from the previous owner and seems to be great.
We had a similar issue with a polytunnel on our allotment that collapsed whenever there was a storm. It ended up being mostly held up by things we'd salvaged from skips, so I feel like a couple of tree stakes cable tied to each arch might be a preventative measure, though it adds extra cost 😕

Good for you, I have just taken an arch out from my front garden it was rubbish, did not hold up one season. I had yellow honeysuckle growing over it. Sadly I had to drag the honey suckle over a wall and cut it right back. Was very disappointed.
Well done, giving us the warning about the quality of the arches. It’s always the way of things, we learn by experience. But so sorry to see the way your plants were.

I sympathize with you. My late mother bought it in Lidl in 2022 for €33.99. We have clematises on it. In 2023, it tore itself off in the same way because of the wind. Now I bought a more expensive one online, I paid €68.62, and I got exactly the same arch as this broken one, it's also all wobbly, and what's more, it's very expensive this time! Damn scammers! But there are no others on the market at all and I really needed it! I think this year I finnally understood what the matter was. First, they should be assembled in the place where they will stand, the first lowest sets should be pushed into the ground immediately, paying attention to the distance. The screws must not be screwed in all the way, but only enough to touch the metal. I did everything wrong again this year and now I'm just waiting for everything to tear off again. Shame! If only they wrote in the instructions what I came up with after all my trouble!
I have one too, it's crap tbh. I think the better choice is probably livestock panels made into an arch, if there is a way to get them to where you are.
The old saying has always been........."you get what you pay for"😒😒 As for "burying it a fair amount" in the ground???? - that looked like a good 6". Just looking at the height above ground and the weight of which it was carrying, I'm totally NOT surprised it fell to bits.

Hi. I bought one of these yesterday, and before I saw your video. It was a nightmare to put together as when i attached the screws to the horizontal pieces the little plastic lugs kept rotating in the tube. I got around this by pulling them out and gripping them with a pliers to drive the screw in tight. Once I did get it erected I too saw how weak it was likely to be, so I've driven in long stakes at every corner and fixed them with wire. Hopefully this will add a bit of strength, but I'll let you know how it turns out at the end of the season! I can see myself making one out of wood!
Yeah I used to have those years ago, failed in the same way. Powder coated steel and they just rust through really quickly.
Ask you local scrap man for some copper pipe, will last and the patina is nice ;)

If it's not fit for purpose, it shouldn't be on the market. Hope you managed to save the plant!

I bought one of these didnt last 10 months, collapsed under the runner beans., managed to fix it and then the wind had it and like yours is just disintegrated :( Im going to invest in a cast iron one at least that should be sturdy. Im sorry your plants got a beating like that too, hopefully you can fix it until you can take the plant down or replace it. Jen

Epoxy weld and some chicken wire ,some star pickets whacked into the ground to tie them and stabilise them and they last forever brother

Bless you I'm sorry that happened to you that's gutting. The only good thing that came from it is it very well shows just how much ground space vertical growing saves. Could you maybe get something like bolt cutters or a hacksaw and cut out a little at a time or do you think that would damage your plant? I wish we could get those cattle panels that all the gardeners in the US talk about but I haven't seen anything that strong over here. That's not to say they don't exist but I can't find them. They are dearer but you see them swinging on them. You could just imagine what would happen if we started swinging on our arches. I'm glad you warned us though as I was thinking about buying some of those. I hope you don't get any more of them damaged with plants on.
the closest thing to cattle panels over here is concrete reinforcement, i've seen a few of those used but they're hard work to bend into shape
Where did you buy it? I bought an arch today but I've not opened up the pack yet to check quality. I have Hazel on my plot so I'd like to try making some arches with it too.

It is shameful they are making rubbish things for the public. It needs to be four times thicker rods than it is like the one on TH-cam from Harrods that costs hundreds!!!
I used 4 the whole last season and they held up. Put them in large pots, sand at the buttom against the wind and at the house wall. Still plan to buy 2 more. But I will secure one with the hedge and stakes. This time, I will make a wide arch, not the tall one. Even though we have a lot of wind, I hope they will held out. Planning cucumbers, runner beans and pumpinks on the 2.

if you noticed the arch in my garden. it was supported by a road pin either side. it survived the season, but still rotted away at the bottom.......................brian
