The reason it aims backwards isn't to take advantage of possible walls, as you say. It's because top-down light gives your subject raccoon eyes. Aiming the light backwards a slight bit causes the bounce to come from slightly behind the photographer, filling in the eye sockets more.

Hello, Naomi! Is your flash's wide panel out? That's the pull-out screen that lets the flash to cover a wide-enough area for wide angle lenses. This panel can't be out when the flash is in AI.B mode. If you already have ATG/Jinbei/Phottix/Canon 2.4GHz transitter, this will not work. Better bring along lots of AA batteries, no ATG HV Port for using ATG/Quantum Turbo.
