I've been playing music for 5 years and bass for 12, and I really can't tell much of a difference. The new pickup sounds a bit brighter, but I wouldn't say one is better than the other. No hate, just my thoughts. That being said, I've yet to find a Squier bass that isn't gigable. What I have noticed is that, most Squier models are aimed at an older sound, mostly. When you slap some flats on Squier, they all sound fantastic. It's probably that the pickups are geared towards that type of sound, kind of like the old Alnico II pickups on the first fender models.
Agreed. I have a Classic Vibe and I switched PUs to Seymour's SPB3 and didn't like. Then changed to CTS pots and Orange Drop cap and that I liked but still not that wood sound I wanted. finally I came back to the stock PUs, changed the cap to a .22uf Orange Drop (intended for guitars) and put flatwounds on it and I finally got the sound I wanted. like those 70s pbass. I wonder how would work on these stocks of the VM version.
That sounds fantastic! BIG improvement, tonally! Does the manufacturer make a "J" pickup for a 5-String? I would be really tempted to go with a set of these for my squier P-bass 5, if I could get a set to convert it to a PJ setup.....
Hmm... I prefer the stock pickups actually. Those Ulyate pups sound way too muddy for me. I've listened with decent in-ears b.t.w. FAB bass Squire made. A bloody shame they're not making them anymore.
I dunno man. Maybe it's just my shitty in ear phones or combo'ed that through this laptop's sound chip, I'd take Steve's word for it. Rolled this vid more than once on and off a couple of years now. Hard to disagree with a still working bassist who I'd presume should probably has seen and heard enough through his ongoing years and been right here on youtube for what over 10 years now Steve? Keep up the good work man. That being said, I myself are planning to get back on the saddle at the ripe age of 40 (marriage, divorce and life got in the way hey think some fellas know the drill yeah?) and this Squier VM PB Vs are what I'm aiming for. So it's good to know that there'll be some good aftermarket pups for it should the need arise.
I just re-listened to this at work through my pretty good, but yet, desktop speakers. They made the stock pickup sound superior! If you are reading this and thinking critically of the Ulyate pickup, having only listed to it using speakers, it might be worth it to try again using a good pair of headphones. The experience will be different.
They both sound good, but the Ulyate has a little more "air" to it, I feel (Great playing by the way). However, I think one would be hard pressed to hear any difference at all during a performance with a band. This reinforces my experience and opinion that changing strings makes a lot more difference than changing pickups.
That's a great question and I will ponder and research and hopefully have an answer!! Haha!! I know that back in the day, a lot of players would tune their P Basses down to D, C, or B to get to the lower range. Anthony Jackson definitely did this, check out his playing on Chaka Khans "Naughty" album, some of the best bass playing ever recorded in my opinion, Move Me No Mountain and Clouds are the 2 standout tracks with the P Bass tuned down to B.
Horrible sound!!! I have an R bass that came with those pickups and I didn't like the sound,,the sound was to boomy whith out definition also too loud! It seems like everything is extremely loud, the low, mids and hi...

José Ortega Beede You’ve been playing bass for 12 years but music for 5 years!? What have you been playing for the other 7 years on your bass!?
Nice tone, cleaner on both the top and bottom. Great playing also Steve.
I agree and thanks so much!!! Great pickup indeed!!
Clear improvement. Wow, pretty dramatic too, to my ears anyway.
I agree 100%!!

My god you play so well
That squire pickup was the most offensive sounding pbass pickup I've ever heard. Great Improvement.
The stock pickup is lacking in so much, swapping pickups in these Squier basses makes them actual gigging instruments.
Based on this demo they sound 98% alike

another good bass review
Thanks Nikolas!!
Sounds goo. How is that low B string? Is it floppy or good tension on it?
hardcorps72 The Low B string is surprisingly great!!! For a $300 or so bass it's great.
I didnt even know you'd changed pickups
Sounds good
Yes it does. Thanks for making such great pickups.
Sounding great! Just wondering is there any record of a hit recorded with a 5 String PBass? curious

AJ played a jazz bass
@@danjo7398 Jazz
i prefer the original pickup, all original
Is this bass still available? :)
In terms of production, sadly not. They discontinued no later than 2016. But hopefully, Squier makes a new P-Bass with 5 strings in this new decade.
If you ever want to sell the Squier P bass V just inbox me
