‘Open Compositions’ are a creative and unique solution to mix composition with improvisation.
They can help groups of musicians play collectively in new inventive ways!
In this video, we sit down with legendary composer, improviser, and musicologist Carl Bergstrøm-Nielsen and pick his brain on the colorful world of 'open compositions' and other ideas of improvisation and composition.
Check out his massive website here: intuitivemusic.dk

Liked, Added to favorites , and will be shared with bandmates......I've been trying to steer our Improv band this way...just to Change things up...because the only constant is change and I like change, loose change , lost changes and deranged changes.

Thanks Indigo! Can't fight them changes! If you have any specific open composition type pieces I'd love to see the score.
BTW, I discovered that if a link is placed in a main comment then that comment doesn't show up. I pinned your comment for it to become viewable. Cause your music is filled with delightful changes! One way around this is for you to comment, then reply to your comment with the link.

if you'll work out ideas that you would like to share for enjoyment of a wide variety of potential performers, consider adding it to musicgames.wikidot.com ;) Carl Bergstrøm-Nielsen was kind to provide some of his work for the page library himself.

Really incredible vid man, I learned a lot of cool ideas that I’m going to try with a couple of open-minded bands I play in. I could also sense the passion that was bursting out of CBN during the interview, so cool that you got to interview and jam with a legend!

I'm guessing that these are related to Stockhausen's text compositions? This is the first I heard of Carl Bergstrøm-Nielsen. His website looks massive.

There are some relations between them. We'll get a bit more into that in part 2. And, yes please, check out Carl's website. But, don't get lost! One can spend days in there!

This is amazing. Who coined the term open composition? Or will we find that out in part 2? Carl seems awesome! I'll look into his work.

Great video! Really well explained. However I wouldn’t call ‘ Un Coup De Dés ‘ by Barry Guy a graphic score in the abstract sense you use here... yes it is definitely graphic in make up but probably better described as a language score as it does follow a set path with prescribed actions for the performers, as opposed to the abstract play anything inspired by the graphics way. Looking forward to the next video! Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much Matt! And nice catch with "Un Coup De Dés!" You are correct, and that was an oversight on my part. I saw it performed once and was told that Barry Guy referred to it as a 'graphic score." But it does have specific instructions.
BTW, I've been checking out your music and I'm very impressed! I'm very interested in "The Shaman." Fascinating stuff!

Thanks for your kind words Marcus! I know Barry's work really well having had some short intensive study with him.
Most of my work is done through my group Ensemble Entropy which looks at the space between space between composed contemporary music and free improvisation... th-cam.com/channels/lNGfR99ZyKz_HMbchtgmnw.htmlfeatured / www.entropymusic.org

Whoa! Ensemble Entropy is a great band/collective(?). I appreciate the drummerless instrumentation, with all respect to drummers of course! Let me know if you ever tour Japan.
For "The Danish Seasons" you can contact Carl from his website: intuitivemusic.dk
He also features a lot of free scores there. A lot of what were featured in this video.

Thanks! Yes EE is fl, sax, vln & db with guests. We do include drums occasionally... like with everything it is finding the right person and we are extremely lucky to a have fantastic drummer in Mark Sanders who sometimes joins us!

I saw the video with Sanders after typing that! I agree, fantastic drummer! BTW, I found a direct link to "From the Danish Season."
