  • This video explains the construction of lumped mass matrix for the purpose of dynamic analysis of structures. In any dynamic analysis procedure, the joint inertial forces are related to the joint accelerations through the mass matrix. There can be two ways to construct this matrix (the consistent mass matrix and the lumped mass matrix). In this lecture, using ETABS examples, I explain that the global lumped mass matrix can simply be constructed using the assembled joint masses (based on their tributary volume and unit weight of material) in different degrees of freedom. However, this only works when the joint's local coordinate system is also same as the structure's global coordinate system. I hope the presented explanation will be useful.

Sir, how to convert three dimensional building into lumped mass model for calculation of Stiffness and mass matrix

Dear sir, am pleased to learn new things in-depth daily from your classes. I have some basic doubts in this video, which are very silly and a few things make me confused.
Could you please explain the rotational masses in detail, I couldn't understand?
When we look at the results of modal direction factors. The time period decreases with an increase in the modes. This means the building shall be designed for the least time period, as it's going to fail during the period of time before it reaches the first mode of failure. As the time period for the first mode is higher for all the modes of failure.
Also, please show me how to get the storey stiffness. Because when I checked on the model, its showing empty

Thank you, Sir, I have a little question, to define when is the diaphragm rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible should we measure if the maximum lateral deformation of the diaphragm is more or less than twice the average story drift? As well as Could I consider the existence of an entire slab as a rigid diaphragm?

Dear Sir, do you have any plan regarding nonlinear analysis, if yes, when?

Yes. I plan to start lectures on nonlinear modeling, hopefully in 2 weeks time.
