To celebrate the almost-90th Birthday of Walt Disney’s Pluto the Pup, I take a look at his evolution, right from his first Mickey Mouse short appearance in 1930, right through to his modern day CG look.
I take a look at how he evolved alongside Disney’s other popular characters, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy and how his development lead to the advancement and revolutionization of character animation and complex action - as a follow-up to my previous videos “Evolution of MICKEY MOUSE Over 90 Years (1928-2018) Explained”, “Evolution of DONALD DUCK Over 85 Years (1934-2019) Explained” and "Evolution of GOOFY Over 87 Years (1930-2019) Explained"

Fan theory: the first two bloodhounds are Pluto's parents. Pluto was the runt of the litter and not interested in tracking down bad guys, so the breeder gave him away to Minnie as a pet. And the rest, as they say, was history.
Maybe then Minnie gave pluto to mickey, either as a gift or she couldn't look after him.
Or since mickey and Minnie are probably dating, they both have pluto.

My favorite Pluto cartoon is Lend a Paw. I get emotional when the little kitten is in trouble and cheer whenever Pluto saves that kitty!

The one time Pluto actually talked was kinda creepy, they made the right move to never have him speak again. Let Goofy be the talking dog. Also props to Pluto for leading the way of _"Character Animation"_

@@chaoflaka8132 actually Pluto the dog was created in the same year as Pluto being discovered. So its likely they couldn't think of a name, saw the news, and thought Pluto was as good a name as any

It's an interesting follow-up also to see pluto and Goofy in the same scenes like in the first cartoon in B/W and the one on the end with the Christmas Carolers.

That bubblegum one showed up on House of Mouse when I was a kid! I didn't know chip n dale started out with Pluto. I used to watch the Chip n Dale cartoon allllll the time.
Chip n Dale’s first shorts were with Donald, but they did plenty with Pluto too 😊

I LOVE the short where he drops a coin in the manhole and retrieves it with chewed bubblegum. It's one of my earliest childhood memories of him. Also the one with him getting lost in a cactus maze.
Pluto is right up there with Tom & Jerry as one of the slapstick greats :)
Next to Mickey(my #1 favorite Disney character) - Pluto is my #2 favorite Disney character and my favorite Pluto appearance has to be "Pluto's Blue Note"-a classic (and great) short.
I have always been partial to Horace the Horse but they never seem to do much with him .They do more with Clarabelle.
Yes both of them are awesome! Horace, Clarabelle and Daisy are my favorite minor characters.

I would love to see a video on Pete since he is one of the oldest recurring Disney characters and one of my favorites. He also has had a lot of character development/change. He is either seen as an enemy or friend of Mickey and the gang(Depending on the series)

What I find hilarious is the fact that there are some theories going around saying that Pluto is just a humanoid person who likes to act like a more feral person and pretend to be a dog. I know it's a stretch but it's funny, probably not the intention at all but I find it interesting how his design is strongly plantigrade (walking on palms and feet unlike digitigrade, walking on fingers and toes and the pads) while other dogs and feral animals seem to have a simplistic but still a fairly realistic approach. It still depends on the episode/movie and storyboard artists since some of them pictured feral people more cartoony and some a bit more realistic, but the point still stands.
Pluto Pup is one of my favorite Disney characters. As a little girl I called him "Pluto Pup" and I'm sticking to it.

Fantastic overview! Pluto's Christmas Tree is the one I watched the most.
I prefer his classic 50's look. His 90's look is a close second. I'm not a fan of the newer more stylized look. I understand Disney was trying to reinvent themselves a bit but it's just too 'cartoony'. Call me old fashioned but I just don't think it suits the characters well at all. It's good animation don't get me wrong. I just think it better suited to non-Disney characters.

Honestly, I think the new style completely tossed the concept of "appeal" out the window and is actively dis-inviting to the viewer. The whole series is an eyesore. Not sure what's going on with American animation at the moment.
I really never understand why people seems to hate the Paul ruddish shorts. Do people really like the bland corporate Mickey of the past. Mickey hasn't been in anything funny eversince Fantasia and his character provided very little for comedy or gags, there were a reason why he disappeared from any theatrical releases and it became more and more difficult for writers and animators to come up with gags. Walt even said that "Mickey is our problem child". But now he have a flawed comedic personality which makes him fun
@@Nasir3623 It doesn't mean they need to develop an art style that I don't want to spend two seconds watching.
@@Nasir3623 The animation isn't very fluid. It's more Ren & Stimpy or Spongebob than Disney. That style is OK for different characters but Disney spent almost a century refining the characters as we know them today. It's not about 'tradition' or anything like that. It's about what works. They distilled the best of what 2-D animation has to offer. The new shorts are throwing out all the refinement for stuff they'd already moved past.
Also-the reason you didn't see a lot of Mickey is because they didn't want to oversaturate the market NOT because they 'couldn't come up with any gags'. Disney has their pick of the best writers around. They're not lacking for good gags.
Another great evolution video. The most entertaining part of these is away you narrate them, you have a passion that just hooks me right away and I always learn a lot from these.

Even though Pluto is "just a dog" and not "humanized" like Goofy, both of their heads are structured very similarly. I own a "How to Draw" that I purchased from Disney World which shows this.

My favorite Pluto shorts are the ones that featured Pluto with Dinah Dachshund, his second love interest after Fifi the Pekingese. This is a bit delayed, I know but, I would, actually, love a video talking about some of Pluto's reoccurring cast, like Dinah, Fifi, and Butch the bulldog. Don't know if anyone else would be interested but, I would love to know a bit more of the history of these side characters. (Especially since Dinah was one of my favorites growing up). Sidebar: Is it just me or does Pluto's redesign in the current Mickey Mouse series make him look a bit like Odie from Garfield?

Yes. There was a female dachshund named Dinah. As for Fifi there was a short where they were married and had five puppies.

I am looking for a black-and-white Pluto cartoon where his sense of smell is beautifully and graphically shown (he is pursuing an animal, partly in water). I saw it but once and was very impressed.

Dave, you got it wrong! You said that Mickey never appeared in any of the shorts released in 1950. Mickey actually *DOES* appear in a short from 1950; he and Minnie both make a cameo appearance in "Crazy over Daisy", where they can be seen driving a car.
No, what I said is that Mickey didn’t “star” in any shorts throughout 1950 - ie. there were no “Mickey Mouse” shorts released during the year.

Definitely something I've considered for a long time, and kind of what I was hoping would come out of the Behind the Disney Classics series - though that never really took off.
With the success of these evolution videos, I might try and retool my ideas, and tackle this in a more analytical way

Love these videos! Thanks for making them. "pluto never talked again." Didn't pluto talk again in brave little tailor to the king? (he was a knight and stood up on two legs!) Was that pluto? Some sites list it as pluto and some don't so beats me. As a neat bit of trivia one of the pluto gets the paper shorts "ufo" got a big-screen release in front of my favorite martian making it the first pluto short on the big screen in a long time. Two more shorts from mickey mouseworks (one with goofy riding a skateboard and Donald and daisy at the opera with Donald fighting a bomb) would also get a release in front of Disney films that year as well!
Once you're done with all of the Disney cartoons a video like this for all the Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry I consider those to be similar cartoon style also there are other cartoons like Scooby-Doo that would be interesting to see as well

There is Gyro Gearloose and a Gander character I can't fully recall ...Jose Carioca , Don Carnage , Ludvig Von Drake , Huey Dewey Louie , Chip and Dale , ...you know a series on some of Disneys more obscure characters , some seen only once others only in print , might be fun . Back a couple of millennia or two when I was in third grade (1977) an old teacher had this great book set on the history of Disney animation that I just loved and I remember seeing a few that I would not ever see again . I really liked the comic adventure series and later cartoons like Duck Tales and Tail Spin and even Darkwing Duck very much . Even as a grown man I still think I would enjoy the light hearted escapism .
