Nyhavn is one of Copenhagen's most recognisable landmarks and one of the residents' favourite spots to cool off with a cold beer on a hot day.
Nyhavn's architecture isn't the only thing that stands out; the area's history is as well. Originally, it was a commercial port where ships from all over the world would land, and its bars, alehouses, and ladies of pleasure were full with sailors.
The historic harbour is now dominated by eateries and elegant old residences that have been refurbished. The sounds of jazz and the sights of pavement cafés and people enjoying the calm environment and wonderful food meet you as you walk alongside the canal. Boats line the canal, and canal cruises can take you on round trips of the city's other waterways from here, so you're never far from the area's maritime past.
Nyhavn by Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen, the famed Danish fairytale writer, used to live at number 20. 'The Tinderbox,' 'Little Claus and Big Claus,' and 'The Princess and the Pea' were all written here. He also resided in no. 67 for twenty years and no. 18 for two years, so you'll be walking in his footsteps everywhere you go down here.
By the canal for Christmas
The air in Nyhavn is fragrant with gløgg during the Christmas season, when the annual Christmas market fills the cobblestone roadway with festive vendors and dazzling lights. It's the ideal location for a winter vacation in Copenhagen. Danish Christmas dishes such as beskiver and roast pork are available in the cafés and restaurants. It's a traditional Christmas event.
