Malmö is a city and harbour in southern Sweden, and the seat of Skåne län (county). It is situated on the other side of the Öresund from Copenhagen, Denmark. The city served as the capital of Malmöhus County until 1997, when it was annexed by Skåne County.
Malmö was first called Malmhaug ("Sandpile"). It was founded in the late 13th century, and its herring trade drew German merchants from Lübeck, who relocated there and named it Elbogen ("Elbow") for the coastline's curvature at that point. Following its union with Sweden in 1658, the city experienced a period of economic decline, owing in part to the loss of certain trading rights it had had under Danish authority, as well as many wars between Sweden and Denmark and inadequate harbour infrastructure. Its population had shrunk to 282 by 1730. Its fortunes improved slightly with the construction of the harbour in 1775, but it did not see significant economic progress until the railroad arrived in 1856.
Malmö has been an industrial and transportation hub since the mid-nineteenth century, and it is today Sweden's third largest city. A diverse range of imports and exports travel through its busy port. In The Sound, factories and warehouses have been erected on a large amount of landfill. Near Skurup, about 19 miles (31 km) east of the city, lies an international airport. The resund Link, a bridge and tunnel system that inaugurated in 2000, connects Malmö with Copenhagen and Zealand. Malmöhus (a 16th-century castle and stronghold that is now a museum) and St. Peter's Church (14th-century church) are two historic buildings in Malmö (a fine example of early Baltic Gothic architecture). Malmö College is located in the city. 271,271 people live in the metropolitan area (as of 2005).
