  • Many people might not know, but Japan has beautiful CAR-FREE river paths! Perfect for riders who prefer the flat routes, as well as for long-distance touring. In this video, I followed the Watarase River Path and the Tone River Path for 400km, from Gunma Prefecture to the Pacific Ocean.

    Hello Moe,
I'll be doing my biketouring in japan this coming summer. I'm wondering how's it like to wild camp in japan while biketouring..was it easy? Or did you go to the designated campsite area?
    Thank you 😁.

You have alot of courage! Braving the rain ☔ in the middle of the night, all wet, no bike light and the wind!
I did 80 kms with my bike in one day one month ago and when I came back home there was so much wind 🍃. I love your videos!

Nicely done video. Such great shots of the scenery and don’t forget the food! I do bikepacking off-road in Oregon and Idaho - we don’t as well! I have hike in Nagano and skied there and Hokkaido as well. You motivate me to plan a Japanese coastal bike trip next. Have you lived in the U.S. for a time; I ask as your English is excellent.

What is your handlebar bag setup? Looks interesting

You have a good eye! It's actually a cheap osprey camping stuff sack, which happens to be the perfect size for my sleeping bag and also the perfect size for my front handlebars. It definitely was not designed for bikepacking, but I noticed that the clips line up well with road bike bars and it's become a part of my essential gear :)

Hi there, what a great feat you have achieved!
I'm planning for a bike packing trip from Kagoshima airport to Tokyo Narita Airport.
Do you have any idea on how I can get have it disassembled, pack and ship my bike to Narita airport when I have reached Tokyo?
    Thank you in advance!

Thanks for sharing Moe, it is a great video. May I ask is there any website that shows all the car free river paths in Japan? I am planning to have a 2, 3 weeks bicycle ride with my 7 year old girl. Thank you so much.

Great documentary, thanks for sharing! I am planning to go along Tone river too, not full length, maybe around 70k so I can do it in one day. Is there a guide map? or route is easy to find starting in Shibukawa? Thanks 🙏

Is there a river path on the Tone River from Narita to Gunma? Cool I'm planning to cycle to random places next year. Don't think I'm gonna camp if I don't have to though lol.

Hi Moe, we have just returned home, that is Stirling in the Adelaide Hills from three weeks bike touring Japan. We are so enjoying your video. Only watched this one so far, and now for the second time. I can see you have many more videos to look at too. You have a great knack and a creative flare, for pulling your journey into a fabulous story to view. Congratulations and well done!!
We, that is my 15 year old son and I rode from Tokyo on July 1st to the Nara region and Lake Biwa. We flew back out of Osaka on the 19th back to Tokyo. We died riding up the Hakone Pass and the back roads to Toi, but just so worth it. And then there is the heat and humidity. Let’s not forget that. I have forwarded your inspirational videos onto a Japanese girl we met who is keen to get into this world, and I think you tell the story so well from a female perspective.

I'm very very jealous. Was hoping that Japan will open for "normal" tourism this fall, but looking at the present state, the idea of guided tours straight from NK is really killing the cycling vibe. I guess it will be next years spring. Gotta make sure I'll have enough time like last time (36 days total in 2019) for taking on the climbs and lovely forest downhills. I think I'll be visiting Gunma again as well - Shibukawa most probably and Haruna-san because of the memories.
Keep the stream of videos flowing - they are an amazing "copium" for me :P

Agree - the current rules are absurd. Hopefully the government will be able to get it together and move on with the rest of the world.

there are many routes where camping is possible, just need to do spend some time researching and also be creative/flexible while on the route. Hoping to go camp again soon!
