You my friend are am absolute star, i had a Sony HX60, that i bought a replacement lense zoom for as the original was locked in the extended position, the new one that i bought from china would not work. Turns out the ribbon cable that supplies the voltage to the motor had split by only a tiny tear, so i had to take the ribbon and the top off the locked one, and put it onto the dead one. had i not had the ripdown of your lense on here it would of been an absolute nightmare. Thankyou very much.

Great info! i have two HX50's and both have the same focus problem (code 32:60, turn off then on again) The focus motor can be removed from the lens assembly housing by loosening 2 very tiny screws, the screws don't have to be removed, just loose. When i tried to turn the inner lens by the teeth to get it to stick out it was very difficult to turn but once everything was apart i didn't see any damage or abnormal wear? the plastic sleeves look in good shape also? I could hear and feel a bit of grinding on both when started up, not sure why looking at the lens i took apart.

When you have a ribbon cable inserted into a ZIF (zero insertion force) socket, of course it's hard to get the cable out - the socket is in LOCKED position. It's not suppose to come out. DON'T FORCE THE CABLE OUT with pliers! Look for the plastic hinged door on top of the cable (part of the socket). On a ZIF socket one side will have a hinge. Gently pry up on the opposite side of the hinge and the cable will slip right out with just your fingers and zero force.
That's the purpose of a ZIF socket! Forcing a ribbon cable out from a ZIF socket can damage the socket and the cable!
To reinstall the cable (with the hinge door still up in unlock position) simply seat the cable firmly into the socket and snap back the hinged door to lock position.
Note that not all sockets are ZIFs. If it looks like your socket has a hinged flip top plastic to it it's a ZIF. Make SURE to gently pry from the opposite side of the hinge or you will break one or both of the small hinge pins.
I actually found a link showing a typical ZIF (albeit a TV repair, the socket theory is still the same) here: th-cam.com/video/C9PwK9eGrCY/w-d-xo.html
Best of luck to all of you DIYers

Hi Dave. Thanks a lot for your very helpful and detailed videos! I own an HX60, which I dissassembled using both this and another of your videos because there seemed to be dust on the lens. I was surprised to find two eyelashes stuck between the two parts of the lens that you pull apart at 5:59 of this video. After removing the eyelashes and the dust, I fully reassembled the camera and turned it back on. I was very cautious during the whole process and double checked everything, especially connections. I was therefore very surprised to see that it was not operating properly: the screen is working fine (I can see aperture values, battery level, etc) but displays a black image. One thing I noticed: when the camera is on and the lens out, if I look into the lens I can see all the way into it, up to the lens I cleaned. The diaphragm (iris?) seems fully retracted. When I press the shutter button halfway I do hear a "beep-beep" focus sound, but nothing happens inside the lens. The only incident I had when reassembling everything was that I very slighly cut the plastic of the folded ribbon cable at 3:20 while trying to force it back into position. I did not seem like much, but could it be related to my issue? Or does it stem from something else in your opinion?

    • @daves.projects

shine i flashlight into the lens see if anything shows on screen. could be the cut in the cable. look to see if the cut crossed any of the lines ( wires ) in cable. new lenses are cheap about $50 or so.

Many thanks for this perfect tutorial. As I don't want to buy a new lens for my old camera, I tryied to glue the broken plastic cylinder. The camera is now more or less working. It's anyway very satisfying to find the defect root cause. Could we talk about planned obsoplescence with this very weak part (the plastic cylinder that seems to break in first in the lens) ?

I dropped mine and upon disassembling it with your video (many thanks !) I found that for me too, the "piece that always breaks" or linear motion cam barrel (as the service manual calls it) was broken. The main piece is intact but the three smaller triangle parts are broken off. Does anyone know how to get / make one ? Or could it be glued ? Hi, I have a problem, I watered few water in backpack and my cam and apparently superficially wet casing so I dried it superficially and then turned on normally (I thought it was not wet) but the display looked so turned it off and then I removed the battery but then put them again (I won anxiety) and the display looked dull colored but as dark and took a test shot. After I turned it off and I forgot to get the batteries (I know it's stupid) and several hours after I got home and saw to checarla display ***** looked back but the light was on, and the rest It worked perfectly. I took the pile and felt warm. I removed the memory card and check the computer and the pictures are perfect, the zoom, flash and everything. I disassemble a bit and the humidity sensor was marked but could not see anything wet. I was watching in Aliexpress several displays for my camera from 12-20 dollars (seems very cheap to 921000 pixels) and with good grades. Before buying I wonder if there is any way to tell if the problem is display or something else more serious. Recall that the backlight works. I hope you can help me, I would appreciate it.

    Hi,
I am broken the lens down the final part per your video. However aluminium ring on the final part of the lens (the one with the sticky stuff on it) that I cannot get off. I have tried heating (with small flame) to warm the areas however this has not worked. I am pulling it as hard as i dare and it just will not budge. Any ideas? I really need this off as this is the final part of the lens that has a smudge on it.
Also while trying to pull off the aluminium ring I have placed finger prints on the inside of the lens. Best way to remove these without making it worse? I watched your video of cleaning the RX100 and you said do clean the lens unless necessary.

+Tash Proud try to twist lightly as you pull, pulling with steady pull till the tape loosens. its just stuck on the that sticky tape. yes its hard to get the lenses clean like factory new. but if you have to clean use a good clean cleaner and microfiber cloth.

I put the lens inside a (watertight!) ziplock bag face down, and popped it into a bowl of boiling water for about a minute. I had to do this about five times over, with attempts at tugging off the cover. Once it had started to budge a bit (the lip between the inner casing and the cover will get wider), I stuck a spudger in between the front of the cover and the lens flap - to prise between the sticky tape and cover. That was the final push to get the thing off!
Be wary of unpopping the clips on the final part. the shutter flaps are held in by tiny springs, and one of mine came off as I removed it.
I dropped my camera in the sand and so glad I got the cover off - because most of it was gunked inside of this area! Thanks so much for the video by the way. I think yours is the only one that exists, and you've saved me from having to buy a new camera.

first thing you want to try, is get a home vacuum and put it close to the lens, with the camera on cup the vac and lens in your hand and let it suck out dust and dirt. DO NOT put the vac directly on the len. theses lenses have 3 sensors that tell the camera the position of the lens and when they get dust or dirt in them they malfunction.

+John Markantonis (Efkolo) make a clean work area as you will be worker with very small parts, springs that can easily get lost. turn the camera on. zoom the lens out. remove the battery. with the lens now zoomed out pull on aluminum ring ( b ) constant pull to get the sticky tape to release. apply light heat to front if needed ( see sticky tape 19:11 ) once the ring ( b ) is removed un-clip ( a ) ( see clips 19:33 ) the lens flaps are spring loaded with a very light and very small springs. take cation not to let springs fly out and get lost. the lens flaps fold together once in place and the spring makes them move ( open ) when the camera is on. if they get out of place they dont open so you have to get them back in place. ( a ) is held together with two pieces that clips together with the lens flaps inside. I might make a video showing this.
