I admire your tenacity but maybe it’s time to listen to what the horse is trying to tell you. Reevaluate, perhaps a different approach, as much as you think her trot improves her expression doesn’t she isn’t a willing participant. You’ve achieved a great deal with this mare which is very impressive, maybe having one of the other horses nearby, present in the arena would help her to settle I know it does with my mare. All the best x
I am curious…have you watched any of the videos of the horses while they are in the pasture, and how fixated Bella is on Apollo? I am pretty sure Bella would be so distracted by Apollo in the ring that it would be a losing battle for Tara.
This is friendly advice , take it or leave it , at this stage of Bella’s training she should be just moving forward freely & happily around the arena at walk , trot & halt using gentle half halts ( pressure & release ) at the moment I’m not seeing any release only pressure which she Is rightfully trying to escape/ evade from . Please ditch the elastic reins ( constant contact ) & forget about leg yielding she is way to green for that kind of work .At the moment the only release of pressure I see for her is when you get off & lead her out of the arena .
I usually would work the horse from the ground, turning the horse to the right and left for 10 minutes; that allows the animal to warm up, study the surroundings and relax. Then the walking must be done for 15 minutes non stop, trotting only thereafter. 😊
I think the work you are putting in is a little ahead of where Bella actually is in her training. She doesn't yet have any support from her hindlegs and as a result is very hollow, crooked and lacks stability. This lack of balance is possibly contributing to her overall demeanour. Continuing to 'ride through it' in this manner is counter productive IMO- she needs to learn how to use herself properly using structured groundwork exercises that you can then transfer to the ridden work.
With all due respect: I have watched a number of your videos but I don’t think Bella is ready to be ridden under saddle. She is trying to tell you something is bothering her. You call her naughty, but horses are not naughty they are trying to communicate. She is hollow back under saddle, maybe you could be doing balance in hand work, working on trust, relaxation and suppleness. Not all horses develop the same, she seems nervous and tense under saddle. Maybe check her teeth if you haven’t already, maybe the saddle is pinching or maybe her insides (ovaries etc. may be bothering her). I have never seen her relaxed or happy under saddle. I would have a qualified vet who is aware of a mares needs check her. Her behavior looks to me that she isn’t happy and she is trying to tell you. She looks to evade any of your aids. Again just my opinion, she is a lovely horse but really something is going on. As I stated previously I’m not trying to be disrespectful. Maybe she is just not ready to be ridden mentally. I have always been told baby steps in developing a young horse. Please don’t take this as being rude, there is obviously something going on but it isn’t her being naughty. I truly think she is trying to tell you something is bothering her. 😉
she is saying let me be Just a Field Ornament, and that's not happening. She is not naughty she is stubborn but she only has a few hours riding in total, she is coming along fine. You are expecting to much from a lightly ridden wilful horse. She is a great horse and will soon be on board.
Bella's trot definately has a wobble to it...when she head's back towards the camera it's very noticible...reminds me of myself in the morning trying to move my arthritic bones...LOL...wobble-tobble-bobble😄😆😄😆😄😆
💞Glad you were able to prevent a bad situation Tara. Bella looks beautiful. Iam glad you shared last week yours and Rens trip to see the Andalusian Horses. Now I can see Bella's Breed and understand her movements much better. hope you know what I mean. 💞again, enjoyed the video🏇🏿💞
Hands down, and relax - your horse does what it think it needs to do, or it does what it needs to do to survive. If you panic, and put the reins in the air, she panics to and go faster. and you need to stop using the reins as balance. 😕 I know its hard, and you are doing good! dont think i just want to correct you.
You know what makes our American Mustang a wild horse is they have that Andalusian in their ancestry from the early Conquistadors. Ride'm Cowgirl!!!!! I love all her muscles. She is so built and she is not even finished growing. Bella is an excellent horse.
Im seriously worried. That could have turned out badly. Quick action weight shift saved you a nasty fall. She looks bothered and twitchy. She is a young horse and I think maybe a little ground work before mounting could help her settle any miscommunication she may be feeling?
Teaching a head down queue may be something to add to your toolkit. It lowers their heart rate and relaxes them. I am starting to ride my youngster and it has helped tremendously. We do it while leading, while she is tied or stands, when walking/trotting. Just a possibility that may work for you as well. Great recovery! I really enjoy watching your videos and progress.
Tara has trained all her horses to the english language, throughout all her working with each one she consistently uses "head down" as part of her riding routines with them. It is so amazing to see them lower their neck/head carriage. After years of watching her videos, I am so glad to watch it all from "across the pond" (eastern North Carolina) :).
Tara is a remarkable Horsewoman! Bella was right on the edge of a bolt with almost no aides and a slipped saddle. Only someone with years under her belt could have put everything right without an accident WELL DONE 👍
@@Helenwyatt7 I think maybe Bella has learned to blow up already...she's a quick study. It is odd that the saddle slipped. They use those nice buckle girths...you tighten to a known quantity. Western is way different
I really have to agree with running martingale. Its a tool, just she pushing beyond my comfort level, and I am not riding her, just feel if she gets you off ,its going to be a lot of steps back.. just a thought not saying your doing anything wrong. Just your safety.
She's so frisky, I'd use a lightweight western or aussi saddle with thicker/more stable stirrups & a higher fork on in the front (which stabilizes the rider, gives leverage) for a while. Could save you from some unnecessary spills.
Bella figures if I trot or run we'll get done faster and I can get to my brothers faster. 🐴❤️🐎. She knows your voice change and straightens right up. She doesn't want mom upset. Smart girl♥️🐴🧑🦳
Awesome. And I’d just said to myself, she’s going to have a very nice trot when she lets go control to you more. She’s quite supple, flexible and nimble. My mare used to think that her life was just one big meal. I was just an interruption. But she was the most fun horse I could have ever had. Bella is going to be so much fun because she loves life so much. 🎉😂❤
My Goodness Tara…..you have nerves of steel‼️‼️ My days of riding youngsters have gone as I’ve got older. I’m really impressed with your bravery…..but feel Bella is an accident waiting to happen. But my goodness, she was a different horse today than yesterday…so if she improves like this it all may go to plan👍.🥳
Compared to Farouk when he was learning, Bella has been doing similar really. In fact Farouk had a proper bolt around the arena, so she's just reacting the same way he did.
Bella is going very well, She struck off on the wrong lead because her weight was on her inside shoulder, so the other lead was far easier to strike off on Has she had her saddle fitted? she is quite broad and she just isn't tracking up once you are on her and drops her back a bit. Might not be that, but There is a vast difference between person on and off
You always have the courage to 'do it again' and correct mistakes. It's so healthy for her to know what is not acceptable there and then. She's young but she's definitely coming on in leaps and bounds. We'll done both of you. K😘😘😘
Well done Tara your years of experience do you great credit. It must be scary for Rens to watch when Bella does her own thing but she listens and moves on from misbehaviour. Still early days. 🐴🐴🐴
It must be exciting stuff riding Bella one never knows what mood she will be in or what may happen! Mums lightning fast reactions and nerves of steel saved the day!
Well done, Tara! You are sn excellant rider! Bella is a beautiful young horse who is better for your patience and understanding. I've read the comments and i think everyone needs to take into consistent thatyou are with her all the time! Not just for brief videos. I think your decisions are good and intuitive. Keep up the good work!
Bella has improved from the last time I saw her, I think she does not like Apollo and Farouk there , because she wants them to see her perfect. Bella is shaking her head up and down a lot, I wonder why that is. She is a pretty and I love her canter.
Dear Tara, I know you are a wonderful horsewoman with a huge skill base and ability, however, you mentioned the other day about a martingale, and I must admit my mind and heart were really happy to hear this and very pleased you talk about it and acknowledge it as a potential option. I believe a running martingale would be an excellent option and tool at present and one you need in your arsenal right now with Bella. Here we have a situation, where you permitted her to keep moving forwards because she chose to, not perhaps because you necessarily asked it of her and it was escalated as Bella got away by raising her head and becoming above the bit along with a combination of her speed and your hands becoming too high and reins less effective as a result. Having a martingale on will provide you with some leverage until she learns to listen and work to your other aids and signals you teaching and reinforcing/asking of her, at least until it becomes second nature to her, and you start riding her out and about especially. You will have plenty of time to get to know her natural gait etc, but for now, you need more and so does Bella. I hope this does not cause offense as you have done a brilliant job with Bella, absolutely Brilliant.
I agree particularly after watching today’s lesson. She is a strong willed mare and a running martingale would prevent her raising her head up and resisting your control with the reins. I’m not saying it needs to be a permanent part of her tack, but it might be invaluable while she’s still green and young. I worry about her being out on the trail and trying something like that.
I agree that a running martingale might be useful in this case, but I think the deeper issue is, with all due and much respect to Tara's experience and wonderful foundation she has laid with this mare, is given Tara's mature years and having watched all of these videos, my fear is Tara is going to get hurt. This is a powerful, smart, intelligent mare and she is going to push back every step of the way. She is going to explode one of these days and I fear Tara is going to be badly injured. It is never a matter of if you are going to fall off or get bucked off, it is a matter of when. There is nothing wrong with stepping back and letting a younger trainer put some miles on this mare. That is just my opinion and it really isn't worth much, but it would break my heart to see Tara injured.
Tara you need nerves of steel to bring a new horse on! Overall, I thought it went well! Unfortunately your Bella is a thinker and she is not going to be happy if the boys are grazing and she is not! Wasn’t sure if she would get confidence from them, but she is a very confident mare and knows her own mind! She’s my favorite though because I think I found your channel just before you found her! She’s too smart not to get this! 🐴🐴❤❤Apollo will need to speak with her!😂
Yes, her trot is improving. I don't think you'd like it as I know you like very forward, but I'd like to see that trot get a bit more relaxed and even tempo instead of her wanting to go into canter. Might get her a bit more balanced and get that canter more balanced also but it did look a lot better when she went onto the correct lead. Hopefully by the time you ride her outside she'll have settled down a lot more. Having said that I am used to Quarter horses and western riding where the horse's head is much lower and they're taught to flex so that in the event of a potential bolt or buck their head can be turned to the side and the one rein stop be put to use. Obviously if the horse hasn't been taught to lower and flex to one side and soften, this would be hard to put into practice. I do realise also that Andalusions have a different natural head carriage than a quarter horse. I think she's going to make a wonderful dressage horse so I really would hate to see her in a bitless bridle or even a martingale as I don't think either of these are allowed in British dressage but I could be wrong - but if needs be....Oh and well done to stay on during her little bolty thing. I have a friend who calls English saddles ejector seats😉😂
Good Evening Tara And Reins. Yes Bella's trot getting much better. And her canter is getting better too. And maybe a few lessons with Auntie Ann. Well her too. Please be safe riding her too. I think your saddle was to los too Tara. All my 💗💕🥰❤️🤗💖 to all.
That is fascinating insight into Bella 🌻 she wants to be with the boys in the paddock and not in the ring 🤔 Whelp, not today. That was definitely a scary moment 😬 Bella is learning to use her speed.
What a family......boys are a distraction whatever the species an age😉😊🙃🤗❤ she is young an obedience to mum's commands over her herd needs are a constant distraction for your girl...I think😉🧐It was amazing your correction of her an that you were able to reestablish your seat without falling😳🤠💯💯💯she moved so well after her original start up!❤🤍💙
I recall being taught to get off after the warm up and cinch in the saddle as it shifts once it warms up and gets softer? I’d have been off to tighten it up and remount finish the session. She’s a handful and willful so she’s a bit unpredictable.
Her trot is showing more extention today....very nice. Apart from the little "blip" at the begining she did very well. She is going to continue to be sharp when out and about!.....gotta have your wits about you with this one.
Little madam did want to be with Farouk trying it on at the beginning as much as we all adore her still we have to remember she’s still a baby in a lot of ways but she also needs to do as she is told she’s very intelligent she knows she is little sass princess lol she’s not a queen yet Tara well done another day hey.tfs😎🏇😎
I keep thinking back to when you bought her.... she was so unbalanced looking and unkept poor baby. And now look at her. Bright as a new penny and stunning to see. Good for you Tara!
🐴🐴💙...😮 Well done Tara getting back into control!...Have to agree with having Apollo and Farouk there, you'd get nothing done! But I know ya gotta do it!🙄...Maybe with Apollo and Farouk 👀 watching they'll give Her a thing or two when She's done🧏♂️😂♥️... Bella's Trot looks amazing!💞...Have to say Bella's nailed the "Stand" command!💃🌟🌟💞...Nicely done, again! Loved this! Thank you ever so much for sharing and All take care!🙏🥰🤗🤗🐶💗...🐴🐴💙
I'm interested to know how long it generally takes to fully train a horse ? I suppose allot depends on temperament. Bella seems like a cheeky teenager at the moment. She's so beautiful.
Depends what you mean by fully train? Can take a couple of years just to get them going ok under saddle but it you want to do dressage, jumping or any other competitive discipline it can take 5 years plus, in fact forever as they're always learning and always need reinforcement.
There is a lot about grass affected horses during Spring in Australia and New Zealand. I believe their products are in the UK Calm Healthy Horses. Definitely lunging before riding. Well done Tara. She looks a beauty when she listens.
I noticed her adding more evasive techniques. I agree that a running martingale will be a helpful addition for both of you. She appears to use her "gaited" forms instead of what you ask for such as correct walk and trot. Counter canter instead of canter. Head high to avoid the bit. Young horse behavior. This is my opinion not criticism as I am not there, and I love how patient you are with her. I adore your videos and thank you for bringing us along on your journeys!
hey thanks!! When I saw her evading reins by throwing her head up...that was my first thought. She seems to be finding all the evasive tactics very quickly. I am seeing now why some horses wear a tie down and why some horses need to be shown the stick out on rides
She settled down more quickly today and her balance is steadily improving as she learns to manage the weight of a rider. Your balance is excellent… I wonder if she felt the girth a little loose and this bothered her at the start? Anyway as usual you managed it all well. You got the saddle into position and reset your balance which settled her again instantly. Fabulous. I am so enjoying your videos. Thank you!
Grosses bises mes amis🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🦄🦄🦄🩷🩷🩷🪷🪷🪷
Ahh Tara....that was scary to watch 😮....she isndoing so good, despite likkle hiccups!....her Mane has suddenly grown so long, the gap doesn't look to bad now 😅. Just can imagine her when she is schooled and 'stepping out', and her lovely Mane flying ❤️
its interesting i have 3 mares and training them they can be such drama queens more than geldings always over thinking things but once all that passes with training you will get that little extra more than a gelding , although your geldings are beautiful and spirited 😊
Well as I guess this is in GB, find a Bach flower therapist, she can help to choose the right flowers used for training . You will be amazed what these remedies do.! Wirth a try... And if she is lunged or a free go about in the arena might help her. She is adorable and so are you❤❤❤❤❤
That was frightening to watch even though I knew it must have had a positive resolution. I haven't checked because it's difficult to scroll that far back in time, but I wonder if there are any videos of Farouk's growing pains? I think Apollo was started and backed by others, so I don't imagine there would be any video of his first weeks of learning. Everyone put me straight about anything I have wrong here and let me know if you recall seeing Farouk's training from all those many years ago and I will spend the time scrolling back in time to find them.
Hi Tara and Rens, I am very glad you are an experienced rider Tara and reacted quickly enough to avoid a fall. Did you have to tighren the girth before mounting again? Bella seemed more relaxed today - her legs in her trot looked much less stiff and she lifts her front legs nicely. Maybe she has been watching Apollo! As for not liking to walk, well you did want a forward going horse! LOL 🐎❤
I admire your tenacity but maybe it’s time to listen to what the horse is trying to tell you. Bella is not a nervous horse. However Farouk is a nervous horse.

I have a friend who calls English saddles ejector seats😉😂
she'll get there!! She is still learning how to rebalance with a human aboard...
👍❤️
That is fascinating insight into Bella 🌻 she wants to be with the boys in the paddock and not in the ring 🤔 Whelp, not today. That was definitely a scary moment 😬 Bella is learning to use her speed.
They aren't called moody mares for nothing. They can be a bit witchy from time to time. Bit like having a stormy teenage girl in the house.
Bella is certainly very lively but well ridden Tara, you are such a calm rider. ❤
What a family......boys are a distraction whatever the species an age😉😊🙃🤗❤ she is young an obedience to mum's commands over her herd needs are a constant distraction for your girl...I think😉🧐It was amazing your correction of her an that you were able to reestablish your seat without falling😳🤠💯💯💯she moved so well after her original start up!❤🤍💙
Wow, you never know what your going to get!
You did very well with her today and got this she learned that you what put up with miss behaviour and she hear you Tara
You are very brave, Tara! You inspire me to be brave too.
She definitely keeps you on your toes! lol
All things considered....she was a good girl!
❤
She looks a beauty when she listens.
tfs
Liebe Tara, Bella läuft fantastisch! Laßt euch beiden ein wenig Zeit... ihr macht das super!
Danke
Got to say, you are a sight braver than I am ...at this point she'd be in horse mart or a field ornament :D
Whew that was a bit scary having the saddle slip when Bella was already bouncy and a bit willful! Still a nice lesson once she settled.
👍
She did so well today! She is beautiful!!❤
👍
Disunited is not the same as disunited, she tried hard for you but seemed slightly cold backed at the start
❤️
martingale till she learns not to throw her head up ? 🐴
I think she really wants TO GO🎉❤
Ahh Tara....that was scary to watch 😮....she isndoing so good, despite likkle hiccups!....her Mane has suddenly grown so long, the gap doesn't look to bad now 😅. Just can imagine her when she is schooled and 'stepping out', and her lovely Mane flying ❤️
❤
its interesting i have 3 mares and training them they can be such drama queens more than geldings always over thinking things but once all that passes with training you will get that little extra more than a gelding , although your geldings are beautiful and spirited 😊
👍😊
Well as I guess this is in GB, find a Bach flower therapist, she can help to choose the right flowers used for training . You will be amazed what these remedies do.!
Wirth a try...
And if she is lunged or a free go about in the arena might help her. She is adorable and so are you❤❤❤❤❤
She doesn’t like the turn near the gate
I think all in all Bella is progressing in these videos. She will be finished like Farouk one day and going to events before you know it!
👍
That was frightening to watch even though I knew it must have had a positive resolution.
I haven't checked because it's difficult to scroll that far back in time, but I wonder if there are any videos of Farouk's growing pains? I think Apollo was started and backed by others, so I don't imagine there would be any video of his first weeks of learning. Everyone put me straight about anything I have wrong here and let me know if you recall seeing Farouk's training from all those many years ago and I will spend the time scrolling back in time to find them.
look at the playlist "Farouks Journey" it shows his training. Hw was more difficult than Bella
LOL 🐎❤
Bella is coming along beautifully. Not an easy task training a very intelligent and somewhat stubborn mare :) I am impressed totally. GOOD JOB
she is a great horse
She's a champion
