McFly is an atypical band in that 3 of their 4 members have sung lead, depending on the song, and there are 2 lead guitarists, Tom and Danny, who trade-off in that role, sometimes within the same song. In this song and in RED, Danny sang the lead. In many of their songs, Danny and Tom share lead vocals on different verses. In their newest album, from which this song comes, Tom is not singing lead as much while bassist Dougie is doing more lead vocals than before. Only the drummer (Harry) doesn't sing. Well he probably could but I think he once said he couldn't play drums as effectively if he were singing at the same time.
They started off very Beatles/Beach Boys-esque with lots of guitars and vocal harmonies with a bit of a pop punk edge. Unfortunately, they got pigeon holed as a boyband as they were still so young (although, I s'pose The Beatles were also classed as a boyband when they first started out too 🤷🏼♀️) For their 4th album in 2008, they wanted their sound to be heavier, but the record label thought they should stay with the sound they had already established so they actually released the album Radio:ACTIVE themselves. 99% of McFly fans will tell you that it's their favourite album, along with the new Power To Play album this song is from, which was released a few months ago. This album is a tribute to 70s/80s/90s rock which is why it has a bit of a retro sound 🙂 They cover all sorts of genres really, and even had an album which has what you called a "dance/club" sound to it. There's a few amazing tracks on it, but it seems to divide the fans into a love/hate camp.
I’ve been a fan of Mcfly since the start, you should check out their early stuff, their debut is 5 colours in her hair, then you could see how they’ve evolved. They appealed to such a variety, my son was 5 when they debuted and he quickly became a fan of them, it was his first concert that I took him to.
to answer ur question about the microphone... they only did that for that song, danny who sings red doesn't play guitar for that song so they could do it, but he plays guitar on all their other songs :) they brought the hanging mic back for Red on their tour in 2021 :) loving ur mcfly reactions ❤
Hey I started following you for your The Rose reactions but knowing that you have discovered McFly got me even more excited. McFly has been around for quite a while n they have done literally all genres! But personally I think their Dragonball performance really sums up what who they are as a band! It’s one of their hidden songs originally written for a cancelled movie, which they revealed many yrs later. Only God knows how many amazing songs they have in their dungeon. 😅
Danny (in the middle) and Tom (glasses) both play guitar, and Dougie plays bass. They all sing, though Danny and Tom do most of the singing (new album has more Dougie, yay 🙂) This is from the new album launch, so an intimate gig (and why no one was singing along, they hadn't heard the song yet)
If you watch God of rock and roll watch the live performance on "Live Chris Evans Breakfast show " Been a fan of mcfly since 2005. there is so much raw footage of this band its insane! They share so much raw behind the scenes and acoustic stuff.
I love McFly! They are a band of brothers and just all so talented. And I am going to see them in concert in a few weeks 🥳 Edit: Danny is singing lead! He can literally sing the phone book and make it sound good.
I fully believe this song is a platonic love song about the band. Tom and Danny used to travel to write together as teens so those bits about getting the train etc I think refer to that and there was a period a few years back where they almost split up - Dougie was doing acting in LA, Tom was writing books and musicals, Danny released some solo stuff and they've admitted they weren’t really communicating and I think that's what they're referring to when they talk about chasing different dreams but rock'n'roll brought them back together
The great thing about mcfly is that they know how to use the music and lyrics to convey the message. You feel the emotional intent behind it. Danny’s voice has such a nice quality to it (and he did a show years ago where celebrities attempted opera and he learned so much by way of breathing techniques through it) but Danny and Tom’s voices blending together in songs like Not Alone can give goosebumps
Now that you know more of their history and seen all about us doc (i think?), this song means so much more. It's about them nearly breaking up and finding their way back together and their music being a big part of their healing.

Danny's voice is like he can sing any style, its clean, strong and when it seems like he's reached his limit, there's a little more
