without social media we would not have learned of this family and the people of the Cocos Islands. I wish you all the best, wish I could visit some day.
I love this, mixed feelings about how this guy was ousted, it was probably for the best, but at the same time it seems he tried to be as humble as he can be, and the fact that he didnt force people to change their faith is a great thing, shows that he and his ancestors before him weren't bad people. in our religion the prophet peace be upon him said what roughly translates to "be merciful with a person of status who's dropped to the bottom from the status he had, and a rich man who's become poor, and a man who has knowledge who's found himself between ignorant people"... they are Australia's only indigenous white family, and those Malays are Australia's first non-Aboriginal and Torres strait islanders Indigenous community
I was at school with young John and Andrew . They are a great family and were very unfairly treat by the Australians . Very honoured to have known the family. Dougal
They migrated to Sabah, Malaysia in 1960th for looking for better life. Now the number of Malay Cocos is approximately 5000 people. therefore they outnumber the remnants on Cocos island. hence they won't return to Cocos island anymore
The Clunies-Ross banned Christian missionary to convert the local Malays whereas the Brooke dynasty encouraged the Christian missionary to convert the Sarawakian natives to Christianity.
Maximise5...if those people were converted to Christianity, they would not embrace Clunies-Ross clans with forgiving hearts. Natives who convert to Christianity do not forget and forgive their former masters just look at the blacks and natives in America, the aboriginals in Australia, the blacks in South Africa and other African countries...
Somehow the Clunies-Ross family reminds me of the Brooke dynasty in Sarawak (a large Malaysian Borneo state that is east and south of Brunei). They both are Europeans in independent micronations ruling over Asians, respected the local customs, gave freedom of religion & treat their subjects with care. The major differences are: the Clunies-Ross family never declared themselves kings of the Cocos Islands whereas the Brooke dynasty declared themselves kings.
Sad the things Australian government did. I would be so upset if I was him. I would have tried if I was one of his kids to make enough money to buy the family house back if that bloke would ever sell it.
Amazing story of love, respect , passion and injustices ....... It seems like the Clunies had been hard done by ...... The Government of Australia should have appointed John Ross as the administrator of the Cocos at least ......
My two sons could've change things easily from here, the custody to be given to me what i've been promised, wan n adam the taj mahal seasons but as long as i'm home in scotland away from tawau with my ma n pa..amen..!!!..
John Clunies Ross still has the attitude of a dictator, that he has all the correct answers for running that Island community. I don't agree with the slave labor conditions, but at least the Clunies Ross family gained power through economics and not military conquest.
Has got something to do with adek, james the west islands over the last time 9/11 manhattan..exiled in america from scotland to look for me,jesus for today..hallelujah,amen
maju pulu kita, anak betawi, anak bantam, anak selma, anak van diemen, anak tuan ross...anak gua. The trade winds are turning...sabar ong cocos, merdeka will come
now they have 50% unemployment and all the good jobs are taken by white imports including all the teaching jobs........alot of pro government rot in this video
Medeviel n dark ages makes them slavery here, not me jesus or james,adek..how's my camelot planted poppy flower not the paddy field or wheat field if it's not invaded me here without my will, the prison islands where they'd put me here, the golden cage over mecca..wish i could've get over it here for all of my thy kingdom diana's death disasterly n be home at hometown to my ma n pa the elephants..god bless, amen
I’m sorry sorry to said this John Culie Ross u done our pople very wrong when makeing them very very hard like slave . And gains all the profits from the copra n u paid them plastic money . U builded yourself a Mansion n the pople live in small hurt house .If u could have been fair n paid real money . Give them good eduction , Hispital it would be different strong . U done it wrong John
Hmm it what context? It was his private property. What else could you expect?. People could leave if they wished, they were never slaves, they lived well compared to the Malays and javanese back home but had a closed world. His great mistake was not negotiating wisely with the Australian government and getting the best for the people on the island. Trying to keep a coconut plantation to the end seemed very selfish and foolish. He should have seen that the Australian government wanted Cocos and Christmas island as military bases for the Americans and tried to negotiate leases where the land stayed in his and the locals control by giving land to the Malays there. He would have made much more money and still kept part of his islands.. and stuck it to the Australian government. As it turned out there was no military bases as the Americans went to Diego Garcia instead. He should have transferred blocks of land to his malay subjects on all the islands,. thus tying up the government in any attempt to take the land. Now all the Cocos Malays are squeezed into one small island without any prospects of income apart from government payments and without any strong legal rights to the land. If he had given some land away people could now make business, tourism and the like and all the islands would be in use. If these islands had several hotels and were more populated or the population distributed better there would be work and money available for people. Just as there is no commercial fishing.. and if there was any agriculture Australian government would block the export .. Australia is like a nurturing cancer, it kills you off but paisys you and looks after you as you die of boredom.
That's his familys land then. If it was uninhabited and his family claimed it then it's his. Those Malays surely should just be grateful that this family brought them there. Im quite certain they wouldn't want to go back to Malaysia. They're more than happy living off Australias welfare benefits.
its not his land and no the cocos malays were not happy to be treated as slaves given plastic money amd being sheltered off from the world, in fact there were a large number of cocos malays that moved back to malaysia, get ur facts right and dont be racist
Will walker your ignorance indeed is disgusting! 1. These people were treated as slaves. No slave will ever thank his master for bringing him to a new land. Otherwise you should tell the African-Americans that they should thank the white people for brining them to America! How stupid is that?! 2. These Malays were brought to Cocos BEFORE the formation of Malaysia as a nation! So they predate Malaysia and you want them to return to a country that they do not even know??? 3. Many of these Malays actually went to Malaysia and settled in Sabah for good. What can Australia offer that Malaysia cannot? Malaysia is at par with Australia's development or even more. You just claim to be part of the developed nations because of your skin color! 4. And welfare? Tell us exactly how much they receive per month. These people did not receive even a penny when Australia took over the island while the clan of Ross received millions! So you are saying that these people who are Australians by birth should not receive any help from Australian government? Considering what they had gone through all those years??? 5. The gratitude of these Malays, even though they were treated as slaves to the Ross clan is pretty obvious. Look at them, embracing and chatting and even preparing a feast for the Ross family as if they are one big happy family. The forgiveness in their hearts could move anyone with a decent humanity, but I guess you are not human because you could not even see it!
without social media we would not have learned of this family and the people of the Cocos Islands. I wish you all the best, wish I could visit some day.
"Very well produced, although a rather heart-rendering story"

I was at school with John Jr in the 70's ...always wondered what happened to his family on Cocos all those years ago. Nice video piece
Thank Q for the video and the information...!!!
I see love, compassion, tolerance, respect and generosity after all. Those what matter most.
great family history, would love to see some sort of restoration for the Clunies Ross Family.
An interesting perspective. Great watch having just recently visited the Cocos Keeling Islands.
