As a straight, African American woman in an interracial relationship I started watching the first season because I feel like I’m an open minded person. But at the same time I wanted to see if these women were genuinely happy in their lifestyle with Kody. But him getting a new wife while Christine just had a new baby broke my heart. I could see the hurt on her face. Even though he has other children that’s a super important part of the baby’s life. Idk it made me feel icky.

He behaved despicably when she was in labor too. Plus he spent most of her pregnancy driving to “court” Robyn.

@@Justscrapping1don't forget the ELEVEN DAY HONEYMOON when Truely was only a few weeks old. He is despicable. And Robyn's despicable for accepting that much time and attention in general but ESPECIALLY when she knows that her sister wife just had a baby. Sorry not sorry.

Right? If the wives were truly living their best lives, I would support them. But from the first episode, it was clear they weren't. I know people who are polyamorous. It can work. Just not like this.

    • @Lina_unchained

@@Elaan021 Yes! But polyamory only works because people are honest and open with one another. The whole basis of polyamory flies in the face of polygamy. Kody could never do polyamory because he cannot be honest.

We actually just learned from Christine and Janelle this week that Robyn was forced on all of them aside from Meri. None of them including the children and other two wives wanted her in the family at all. They were also told that Robyn’s kids were now their siblings regardless of what they wanted. And that Meri and Kody had been having a ton of issues so she essentially found Robyn and gifted her to Kody to get back in his good graces.

A few thoughts related to your questions:
    1. Now that most of the kids are adults they do talk about competing for attention, forgetting bdays, etc.
    2. The AUB kicked them out bc of this show, haha
    3. All the adult kids who are married have intentionally and vocally rejected polygamy.
    5. One of his daughters married a POC.
    6. In their book they admit to failing to court a teenager (they waited until she was 18 🙃
    7. Your intuition RE Kody is spot on
    8. There is def a favorite, and it will be very clear very early on.
I would love it if you reacted to more sister wives.

its worse then that you know why Kody left Utah for Arizona? Huntsman was governor he organized wolf hunts against many polygamist cults. Kody's name was on a list of men Huntsman wanted dead because he helped their former leader in the group PPT organize blood killings the other name on that list was Ryner. Jessica got Ryner out but PPT members had their scopes pointed at them and the Escaping Polygamy cameras and when Ethel got out they did it again PPT operated a terrorist training camp in Arizona with Bundy's group Patriot Front and the Oath Keepers these are the same Oath Keepers who stormed the state house and the capital. Right now Cox is the governor he was attorney general under Huntsman but he does not send people to kill bigamist he's not like Huntsman the only people he jailed were The Kingston Brothers, the Blade Leaders, and the Batemans in Colorado City those are the people you go after not independents or people living their religion even if they are bigamist.

I'd add to this great summary that Amanda is completely right, the oldest kids are very parentified. To the point that Logan, the eldest, has made it clear that he and his wife are childfree. I can't help but feel like it has something to do with it (not that that decision isn't valid without the parentification)

Kody actually did "court" and almost "marry" an underage girl, Janelle was married to meris brother and her own mom married kodys dad, robyn broke ever fundamentalist "purity standard" with her ex husband (got prego to force him to marry her instead of her sister) and her and kody were constantly kissing before "marriage ceremony " and Christine wasnt even told about robyn till kody was already "inlove" with her 😅 love this crossover of you calling kody out on his bs 🤣🤣

I think you need to be a bit careful when saying he courted an underage girl. A lot of people will assume you mean like the Warren Jeffs FLDS clan where young underage girls from the age of 8 - 14 are married off. Yes kody courted a 17 year old, who was just about to turn 18. It was a short courtship, they almost always are and was called off before the marriage. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand kody at all, but his situation of courting a near 18 year old when he was just a few years older is vastly different to the FLDS where prepubescent girls are being married off to men ages 30-70.

It becomes pretty clear as the show goes on that they were working overtime in season one to put a pretty spin on everything. Kody may have actually not had a favorite at this point just because we now know they were in a tough spot at that point-I’m saying he was probably so frustrated with all of them that none rose to favorite, which fueled him courting his fourth wife who did become the undisputed fave.
The more I have learned about the AUB and it’s customs, the more I have to believe that this family as a whole-and Kody specifically-did not fit in to the group well. You hear a lot about AUB men slotting into work with a business owned by an AUB member and basically staying put and knowing their place, and as a result a family ends up sticking to life in one particular AUB enclave. But Kody moved them from state to state every year or two until shortly before this show began. I suspect his narcissism was too much for AUB leaders, he balked at being told what to do/they kept pushing him out of jobs, encouraging his impulses to try a relocation that would put him under another group of church leaders, etc.
But the good news is that going public and being cut off by the AUB leads most of these women and their kids to gain perspective and realize what an awful guy Kody is. None of their grown kids are polygamous, the three original wives have left him, at least one of the women and several kids (that we know of) have left the faith…and he’s dropped the jokey mask and just become more and more of an openly narcissistic miserable little troll of a man.

Janelle's polygamist ties are the fact that her mom married Kody's dad so they were step siblings AND she was married to Meri's brother before she married Kody. Her calling Kody and Meri her polygamist friends is hilarious because they were actually her step brother and her double sister in law. I imagine that was left out by TLC to make them seem less weird. It's sad to watch Christine in the first season as she has now said she was actually miserable during this time but was trying to always keep sweet and nice to keep the peace. Also Logan the oldest parentified kid is now married and has basically said he doesn't want kinds because of how parentified he was growing up. Janelle met Kody when she married Meri's brother. After they divorced, she & Kody got together. @dianadias4344 your info is a bit wrong. Janelle was raised mainstream Mormon and when she converted to the polygamous fundamentalist LDS church everyone in her family cut ties apart from her mother. Kody’s dad allowed Janelle to camp out on his ranch for a while after the divorce (she really enjoys camping and just wanted a bit of an escape to camp out in nature and clear her head) and then she began sharing a house with kody and Meri. Janelles mother met kody’s father because of janelles relationship with Kody and Meri. Her mom only married his dad after janelle and kody were both adults with a developing relationship. The wives you see here left him all in the last year. There was a fourth wife, Robyn, that was definitely his favorite. Meri divorced Cody legally so he could marry her an he could adopt the kids she already had. In the first few episodes they fled Utah because they felt in danger by the laws there. They ended up in Vegas, not in one house, but in four different ones next to each other in a cul-de-sac. They had a pretty happy life there with all the kids close together. Then he wanted to move to Flagstaff. They bought a big piece of land there where he first wanted to build one very large house for all of them, even an apartment for himself. But the wifes were so used to having their own household now, they wanted separate homes on the land. They ended up in different homes, rented and bought, far apart from each other because the homes on the land had to be built yet. Then Covid hit, and Cody had strict rules for every household, so he could visit everyone safely. Janelle's kids still wanted to meet up with friends and Christine still visited family in Utah sometimes so he was angry with them. With Meri he hadn't much of a relationship anymore anyway so he stayed at Robyn's most of the time, because she obeyed by his rules. That set bad blood in the family and one by one they left. The kids still don't have much of a relationship with Cody anymore. And Christine is about to be married again, but not in a plural marriage.

I love hearing your perspective on this first episode and I’d love to hear even more on subsequent episodes, but not if it’s going to put you in a weird head space. I didn’t grow up in this cult and Kody (and Robyn) trigger me so I can’t even imagine what it’s like for you.
Anyway, I just found your channel and love it! I can’t wait to watch more!

Thanks! Kody was a convert, he wasn’t raised polygamist. Janelle was raised LDS and was actually married to Meri’s brother first but divorced him and later married Kody.

And robyn divorced a man that didn't want polygamy, then she conspired against the other wives so she could be the favorite wife. Robyn got kody to divorce Meri and marry her to adopt her children (who already had a father). Kody and robyn are the worst!

I hate that this triggers you sweet girl ❤ you have such a tender heart and beautiful spirit. I’m so glad that you got out of the cult! Your commentary on this is by far the best of anyone I’ve heard because you explain things to us that only growing up in a polygamist family would understand. I would watch every episode that you commented on but I understand if it’s too hard for you right now. Perhaps in the future it may be possible. Your instincts are spot on. Don’t apologize for having those feelings towards Kody. There are so many people out there that can see the narcissist that he is and how wrong what he’s doing is. I have just subscribed to your channel and will look into other things that you do as well, best of luck! I pray that you can heal from all the trauma that you have gone through in your life. I am a survivor of much abuse I know it’s a long road to healing but it will come. Take care ❤

It's so interesting watching you offer commentary on the very first episode having very little info about what actually happens 17 seasons later. You literally predict everything just from watching this one episode. So sad how they amped this lifestyle up like it was the best thing since sliced bread in the first season, but the truth comes out more & more as the seasons progress. I was even thinking I missed out on a fun and wholesome family structure after watching the first season many years ago. I do think their collective lifestyle did offer really beautifully unique experiences for the kids growing up, but they eventually showed just how much this family structure negatively impacted them once they got older & had more confidence to speak out. So far, not one of the kids continued this lifestyle in their adult lives. That says a lot💔

    • @tigerlily9929

I would love to watch you doing a live show (or recording, either would be great)on the last season, if you are up for it. Take this opinion with a grain of salt, because i haven’t rewatched the full series since it first came out….
His narcissistic tendencies grow throughout the series (not so evident at first), but also the wives’s sense of independence grow throughout the series too. All family the dynamics completely changed after Robin joined, and also with each move. If you ever have the emotional space to continue watching and reviewing the series, you might find it really interesting to see that evolution.

I think when Christine talks about evening out the family by adding a third wife it means whenever one of the waves is out with the Husband now and there’s two of them sitting at home so they have each other instead of the one wife sitting at home by herself imagining everything that’s going on with her sister, wife and her husband

My dad was the first generation out of polygamy and I was raised in conservative evangelicalism with a bunch of weird abuse instead lol, but this reminds me of how i watch documentaries about evangelicalism. 😂
It can be really triggering because you hear and see SO much of the subtext. Like holy heck.
I would be so interested to see what you think about Robyn. It's widely believed that her relationship to Kody is what eventually broke up the marriage. I totally get not being able to watch for your own triggers though, so take care of yourself. 💜

I just found you from someone over at Andrew Gold's. I subbed ya. 🙂
When I was younger and I used to see pictures of kids in families like the Kingstons, I always wished I could have been one of the members of those families. It looked like so much fun to have that many sisters and brothers, and you were all so adorable, and you always looked happy.
But now as I'm getting older, I'm waking up, and my inner child is as well. Now I've seen the light. I am a fellow truth seeker, you see. Now, I'm always rooting for everybody to get out of those families if they need to (not out of the Browns) but like when I watch Escaping Polygamy. I'm sorry to have to say it, but I'm pretty sure most people reading this understand.

Amanda, the only one that knew about the addition of Robin was Meri. Meri and Kody kept it from everybody else. Sobbin Robin approached Kody, some say she pursued him due to her wanting to be on tv. Janelle and Christine found out at the same time as the children did. This comes out in later episodes and causes a lot of tension. Meri was a typical first wife, she was mean with Janelle and Christine, she was also mean with their twelve children. Some of the older children claimed that Meri not only mentally abused them, some say they were physically assaulted by her too.
