As a Vietnamese, i agree with you. I would prefer to go to the "dirty" place to eat rather than the "luxury" one most of the time. Not because the luxury want is bad. Why would i waste money on more expensive thing when i can get it with cheaper price?

      Agreed!

You talk like this then i have no words to say, honestly.
Of course, eating out is not clean as what we cooking at home!!
But what level dirty you mention?? If the meat is smellings & was wash by alcoho to clean the smell before prepare, it not about dirty but it sickness, cause cancer!!
Nhà cũ mình kế bên CV. Nếu bạn nhìn mà dám ăn thì chịu luôn
Bà bán thịt nướng, xiên que nướng.
Đậu bắp lấy từ túi nilon ra, nước bẩn + nước nhớt, họ vẩy vẩy rồi cho lên bếp nướng luôn, k rửa luôn nhé.
Còn thịt mua thịt đông lạnh 30kg/thùng, rẻ gần 1 nửa so thịt heo tươi mổ mỗi ngày.

      Tim heo 54k/kg

Good food is just that, good food. There aren't any rules that state a decent meal must come with good/bad sanitary standards. It's just trials and errors when it comes to taste. When you live in a city long enough, you'll eventually find a spot that would meet all of your requirements and budget.

Well, maybe some fellow Vietnamese misunderstood your point.
There's a big difference between an unhygienic/insanitary place and a dirty old/disorganised place. Usually the reason behind this is that the owners are too busy serving their customers and got no time to make the place "look good". Moreover, some elders are still holding the belief that "if your business is doing well, changing the look, decoration, name, etc... drastically may make regular customers feel unfamiliar and thus losing trust to the place". And that's why when you ask Vietnamese for their recommendation, most of the times you're going to end up in a dirty old place.

Live and work in Bangkok with a good western salary, and i rather sit on a makeshift street restaurant with simple steeltables and plastic stools and peoplewatch and feel the citypulse a evening than a steril boring foodcourt or restaurant with aircon and often music.
Most se-asian ppl are so careful about cleanliness and quality, that if a street vendor or small restaurant is dirty, they will be closed quickly.
Which does not apply to tourist places where people never return.
In se-asia its so simple go where the locals go and avoid all the fancy overpriced places and tourist spots.
Its simple small streetvendors and"hole in the wall" restaurants live on their reputation fancy places live on their decor environment service and highprices

@@avietnampodcast3574 busy hectic crazy and wonderful new and old mixed everyware..the city never sleeps or stops..and its supersafe for western people.
I can go down walking 3-4 am in the morning buying food and things and dont even have to look over my shoulder(won't do that in any western country - if i can find anything open)
