      Standing in line, or queuing, really came about as a national characteristic because of the two World Wars. Rationing, because of the U-Boat blockade, was so strict, especially in the Second World War, that queuing helped to distribute scarce resources fairly. So, thank you Germany, for helping us to become a fairer and more civilised society. Though it would be good if you could find a different way of doing that next time!

      And yet the average temperature in January in Scotland is 6 degrees C. (I assume that's the average maximum temperature, for a day, rather than the average for a whole day in January. Of course many days can be far colder and some far warmer!) Because it tends to be very damp and windy in Scotland though, it makes it often feel far colder than it actually is. Certainly I have had days, when it was genuinely well below zero, but was dry and sunny, where it felt far more comfortable, than when it was several degrees warmer, but wet and windy. I have a Swedish friend who has lived in Scotland for years and she seems to agree with this.

    • @ellik1165
      @ellik1165 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. The house I was staying in had big windows and the rooms were high. so I think all the heat went up and you could also feel the wind by the windows. That is true that the rainy/damp weather makes it feel much colder. I was in Scotland September-December.
      In Finland we have double-glazed windows and double-doors and the houses are much warmer.

      Scottish weather has been very strange in the last few years. There was 2 months in the summer of 77-90°F but then there were also blizzards in spring... Just recently there was a random 72°F day followed by freezing weather. There’s not usually any snow during November/December time but this varies from year to year and location. Spring is definitely the nicest time of year where there’s rarely any rain and mild temperatures (again, depends where you are).

    Queuing - so, you gather in a random group at a bus stop (no queue). Along come 5 people to join this group, then, the bus comes and those 5 folk race to get on. Some of the group who want to board the bus can't...because it's now full, or, they have to stand inside the bus (seats taken). Do you now think queue's are a "bad idea"? Remember, in a large busy city like Glasgow, busses are frequently full during the rush hours - having to wait for the next bus isn't uncommon...unless you were at the front of the queue ;)
    Scotland has a drinking culture - and you, a German(!!), think this odd?
